    Frozen In Time

Wow, that was fantastic! Brilliant piece of writing! I got chills (no pun intended) when I was reading it. I shared it with my Facebook and Twitter peeps. Thanks for posting it.

    Funny new Wings commercial

This commercial is priceless! hahahahaha!! Just too funny! Good job by the Wings' marketing department. I hope this is a harbinger of things to come.

    Training Camp!

Well, it's that time of year again - just over two weeks until Training Camp!! Who's going? I'll be there from Friday to Monday. I can't take any more time off from work because I don't get paid vacation (don't work = don't get paid). But it'll be so good to get out of town for a few days and SEE SOME RED WINGS HOCKEY!!!

Designer shares idea for new rink

I'm on that "green bandwagon" myself (yes, I'm a crunchy granola type), but I can't see the reason for a retractable roof on a hockey arena. Football, maybe. Baseball, definitely. But hockey? Pointless. Plus that glass ceililng would melt the ice on a sunny day, even in the dead of winter. A hockey arena environment has to be a near-perfect blend of keeping the ice cold enough for the players to play effectively (and safely), while maintaining the comfort level of the fans. The Joe gets it right probably 95% of the time - there have just been a few games I've been to where it felt a little on the cold side, but once the other 20,000+ fans shoehorned themselves in, it was usually fine. But I do like the wider seats (some of us are a bit larger than average...) with cupholders. Tray tables to hold your overpriced pizza slice would be nice, too. LOL

    Are we becoming Lightning fans?

I have always considered myself to be a Red Wing fan AND an Yzerman fan, to the point that if Stevie had ever left to play for another team, I would have bought a sweater with his name and that #19 on it, regardless of what team's crest was on the front. I never thought about whether I would have become a fan of the team, although I certainly would have wanted Stevie to succeed. I will always be a Red Wings fan and they will always be my #1 team. However, now that Stevie's in Tampa, I guess I have become a fan of the Lightning. I certainly am paying more attention to what they are doing than I ever have for any other team, aside from the Wings, and they are now my favorite Eastern Conference team (sorry, Ottawa...you've been bumped!). I want Stevie to succeed as a GM, so that means I want the Lightning to succeed. However, I hope it never comes to a Red Wings/Lightning Stanley Cup final, because I'm sure I'll be conflicted. I mean, I rooted for Canada in the Olympics because Stevie was running the team! I just couldn't bring myself to want him to lose! I don't see any problem with being a fan of more than one team. The Red Wings are, by far, my favorite and #1 team, but that doesn't mean I don't watch - and cheer - for others. For example, when the Wings are knocked out of the playoffs, I always pick another team to follow for the rest of the playoffs, and if that team goes on to win the Cup, I'm genuinely happy for them (all the while wishing it could be the Wings, of course). And there are certain teams that I pay a little attention to, and am happy for when they win. I think most of us on this board would put the Wings as their #1 team, and I don't doubt that there are many who would say the Wings are their only team. But that doesn't make them better Wings fans, just as being a fan of more than one team makes anyone a lesser Wings fan.

    Sergei Federov

I agree with this...the Wings would have found a way to make Sergei an effective player as he grew older, but Sergei just didn't want to be here anymore. As long as Yzerman was around, the Wings wouldn't be "Sergei's team," and since Stevie wasn't going anywhere, Sergei left. I think Sergei thought (hoped?) that Stevie would retire after his knee realignment surgery in the summer of 2002, but when he came back in February 2003, Sergei figured his chance to be Mr. Red Wing was gone and he signed with Anaheim in the off season. Sergei was definitely an enigma - loaded with talent but seemingly unmotivated and lazy at times. But oh, to watch him skate when he was at his peak was definitely a treat! We used to say that Sergei had his dancing shoes on!

5 The Wings don't need retreads...either ours or other teams' (that means YOU, Modano!).

    The new TBL

The link is good, Stu - it works just fine! I read that article on Monday...Stevie still has a lot of work to do, but he has certainly impressed so far. However, the real test will be once the season gets going. That's when we'll see what kind of impact the moves Stevie has made will have on the Lightning, and whether the team can make the playoffs next spring. LOL at "Summer of Stevie!" The Lightning fans are so happy to have an owner and GM who know what they're doing, they're ready to erect a statue in Stevie's honor outside the arena, before a game is even played! There have been mentions of Stevie being an early candidate for Executive of the Year. And the hashtag "yzermanisjedi" (complete with "Yoda-ized" Yzerman quotes) was trending for a while on Twitter after the Gagne trade. But time will tell - the Lightning players haven't even got their skates out of summer mothballs yet, and training camp is still seven weeks away. One thing is for sure - it's going to be fun keeping an eye on the Lightning this season.

    Gagne to Lightning

Wow. Stevie is kicking ass and taking names in Tampa! The Gagne signing was almost highway robbery! Stevie must have been wearing a black mask when talking to Holmgren! Of course the Lightning have yet to play a game but all indications are they will be a MUCH better team in 10-11 than they have been in recent seasons. Some fans in Tampa are ready to erect a statue of Stevie outside the St. Pete Times Forum! I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, but maybe Stevie for GM of the Year? LOL...could happen. Regardless, excellent job by The Captain! (and yes, he is still The Captain)

Bob Probert passes away at 45

That Bob Duff column was one of the best I've read about Probie. Kudos. God, I still can't believe he's gone. I spent part of yesterday evening watching some of his old fights. I forgot how tough he was. There will never be another like him.
