This is insane. I thought for sure that we were gunna end the streak, but today and the last 2 penny starts before this, we won in spite of penny, not because of him. I guess it is a good thing to do to learn to fight out wins, but I don't think Jim will let penny touch the ball come october. Magic number down to 3 pending the indians game tonight, it could be 2 when we wake up in the morning.

Magic number is actually 6. Cleveland is tied with the sox, but they have 2 more games to play. We only shaved one game off the magic number.

oh yeah, the Yanks and BoSox are on 4 game losing streaks bringing the Tigers within 4.5 games of the AL lead. Could we get into that spot? Yankees and BoSox pitching have been terrible lately, and we are playing the best ball in the majors right now, why not?

Magic number is down to 9! Any combo of us winning or the sox losing that adds up to 9 gets us the division! So if we win 9 games out of our remaining 17 games, we get the division. If the sox lose a game and we win a game, the number goes down by two. If both us and the sox win a game, the number goes down by one. You get the point.

I would rather face a more dangerous offense in a short series, that way JV can go 2 of the 5 games. Boston is going to be tougher I believe. They have pitching, and they can slug. the Yankees can outslug someone, but the pitching is like 1, 5,5,5,5. I think that Scherzer and Fister can hold a potent offense at bay enough for us to tackle the other staff. Kind of like the '06 playoffs when we got a couple key hits against the Yankees and put them away before they could get their act together and then we whooped on the A's. At this point, I am just freeking excited to be getting the division crown finally and getting into the playoffs all together.

Sox lost, Indians lost, we have a 9 game lead and pretty much locked up our first division title in 24 years! Booyah!

Verlander had good stuff. He only allowed 3 hits while striking out nine. Its just that Duncan smacked him out twice with a man on. Other than that, JV was pretty good. Anyways, two very very key sweeps put both Cleveland and the ChiSox out of the race. We just need to do our job, and they won't be able to catch up. If I am doing my math right, the magic number is like 14 or 15 now.

solid solid solid win. Pitching was great, offense obviously was clicking, and we got the sweep and a 8.5 game lead on the Sox and a 6.5 game lead in the division going into the next series with Cleveland. We touched up Jimenez last time, and Fister has been rolling, so I expect 2 of 3 with Fister and Verlander going in this series to come out with a 7.5 game lead in the Central. That sets us up really really good going into the last 3 weeks of the season.

Our pitching and Carlos Guillen still sucked, but in the end our bats pounded out a win. A win is a win, but we need to shore up that staff.

Guillen needs to go away right now. We have enough 2nd basemen and he is just costing us runs in the field. Time to take old yeller out behind the barn.

One positive about the Royals series is that we fought on offense. The pitching let us down, but we sure as hell fought on offense.

Two scrappy victories in a row. I like the swagger we got goin here. We know we can score runs, and we know we are never out of it. Just play 9 innings and we have a chance to win.

I was listening to the game on the radio at work yesterday and I totally agree with what was said on the pregame show. The Royals are not a 24 game under .500 team. They can hit the ball plain and simple. The only thing they don't have is pitching. They can out-slug people for wins, their defense, especially the outfield are studs. This is not a team you can take lightly, as was seen last night. Keep in your mind, however, that Porcello is only 22 years old and is still learning how to pitch in the big leagues. He is still very Raw and has not learned the art of pitching. His fastball has taken him up through the ranks quickly, but up here, these guys are professional hitters, and you need to pitch, not just throw hard. He will be good, he just needs some schooling.

ESPN just put an article up that says that JV is on pace to pitch 18% of the team's innings, while Cabrera would get only 12% of the ABs. So thinking that way, who is contributing more to the team? Here's the quote: "Looking at Verlander’s 216 innings shows that he has pitched 18.6 percent of the Tigers' total innings (1161) while the team’s best offensive player and marginal MVP candidate, Miguel Cabrera, has logged 577 plate appearances, or 11.5 percent of their 5,001 total plate appearances. So who is really making a bigger contribution?"

Got All-you-can-eat tickets for the Lions' home opener against KC. I haven't been to a game at Ford Field yet, so this should be a good afternoon on Sept 18.

Good stuff taking 3 of 4 at the Rays, and with Cleveland and ChiSox both idle, we now have a 6.5 game lead over the Central. Heading off to minnesota to take on the slumping twins should be just what Porcello needs to get back on track.

Hopefully Leyland is seeing how well we are playing keeping Raburn the heck out of the infield. Santiago should start the rest of the way since they aren't going to make a deal for a 2B anymore this year. I think that they should take Guillen out back behind the barn once he comes back, because right now there is no spot for him and his knees. Who are they going to send down to get that guy playing time? They sure aren't going to sit Martinez to get Guillen AB's at DH, and he has no place playing defense anymore. He should just be put on the long term IR and cut loose after this year.

Chill, the DP ball was absolutely tattooed and he was lucky to get anything out of it. I do agree kinda with the last one, but Santiago was not getting to the bag fast enough, although any other base would have gotten an out. Had Betimit been in there, the game would have been over a lot sooner. Anyways, we got one game tomorrow and already have enough for a split going into Minnesota, so it hasn't been a bad trip so far. Look at the positive, we have a 6 game lead.

From the horse's mouth: "Overall, this is the kind of game when if you're going to the playoffs, you win, and when you're not, you don't," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. I like what the Tigers have been doing. Our Pitchers have been pitching great, with the exception of Porcello. Since August 16, We are 6-1 and in our 6 wins, we have given up a total of 13 runs. 19 in our last 7 games overall, which is less than 3 per game, all the while scoring 41. That is a 6-1 record outscoring the opponent 41-19. Looks like we are ramping it up at the right time, and against quality opponents in Cleveland and Tampa.

like sand through the hourglass, so are the chances of the Indians and Sox. Stretching the lead to 5.5 over both teams in the Central. Indians are fading fast and I think the Sox are the team to worry about in September.

Statement series there. The Tigers are here to play. Cleveland is going through a 45 games in 44 days (you read that correctly), so they are not going to get a breather until the end of the season. That could be a fantastic thing for us, getting regular days off and a fresh breath of air once in a while. Cleveland is going to get more and more tired. This was huge this weekend. got Cy Verlander going tomorrow, lets rack up some wins here.

Yeah, with Young coming in and Maggs on the bench, Dirks was going to get fewer and fewer ABs. This way, hopefully Brandon's right handed bat can bring some pop to the 3B position against lefties. Dirks will get full time play down in Toledo and get him primed for a September playoff push. Scherzer was awesome last night, should have been a shutout had the umpire not forgotten what a strike was.

alrighty, time to see what this team is made of. 1.5 game lead going in to the series against the indians. this could be the make it or break it of our season.
