Moderation is definitely the key, but the problem with beer and the Mike's drinks is the amount of sugar involved. We went two weeks booze-free, and it made a huge difference. Rather like cutting pop. If you absolutely have to have a drink, stick with clear liqour (I have Ketel One on the rocks) or wine. Try not to have five beers in one sitting (those 110 calorie Bud Lights add up fast!) Wine has other heath benefits, and there's nothing like sipping on a glass of ice cold vodka to give you a buzz that beer would never provide

^^^ This. I've been told by friends that their weight can fluctuate 3-5lbs in a DAY. It's the reason why I only weigh myself once a week, and at the same exact time. It gives me the most accurate reading of where my weight is at. Typically, mornings just after you shower are the best. By the middle/end of the day, too many factors are coming in to play - workouts, what you at for lunch, how many cups of coffee you've had, etc. @ BlakChamber: You can definitely come close to your target weight of 150 if you have roughly 3 weeks to do it. Cut the carbs, cut the beer - or even alcohol entirely. I've lost just about 10 in a month (which is quite a lot on my small frame) and the sacrifice has been totally worth it. My BF lost 15. South Beach is truly the best diet plan out there - and the one where you don't gain the weight back as long as you continue to live by the lifestyle choices (high protein, whole grain carbs, etc.) We've been on it fairly strictly and had a lot of success, but it wasn't a huge change from how we normally eat - just making slight modifications to the menu!

Date: 6/16/08 Start weight: 125 Start height: 5'2 Goal weight: 115 End date: 9/15/08 7/9/08: 122 8/11/08: 117 9/3/08: 116 The weight loss has slowed dramatically, but I expected that to happen. The solution is easy: change up the exercise routine. My body is used to everything I'm doing, and I need to shake it up a bit in the next two weeks to break the threshold. But you know what I've learned since June? That the end number isn't really what's important. I look good. I feel good. I'm eating healthy and making smart food choices. I've proven to myself that I DO have willpower, but that I can give myself a meal to eat what I want and not beat myself up about it. If I go to Hawaii and I weigh 116, it will still be the best I've ever felt and looked - regardless of the last pound. Hitting the goal is great, but overall, I'm just happy that I've come this far and been able to stick with it. Because I'm probably going to gain it all back with all the drinking and eating and sitting I'll be doing

So, we're going camping this weekend and I'm really nervous about the urge to snack. What's camping without gooey smores, alcohol, and cheetos? Despite having packed a cooler full of chicken brats, apples, peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, string cheese, fresh veggies and whole wheat English muffins, I can't imagine how hard it's going to be not to pop open a beer and stick my hand into a bag of Doritos. What are everyone's thoughts on how far you can stray from the track before you get off course? That said, I may still stop at Meijer on the way home to see if they make whole wheat graham crackers and bars of sugar free chocolate.... I'd just hate to have done all this hard work only to have a setback. At least I know I'll get lots of exercise in the form of hikes/canoeing, etc.

Try setting some kind of goal - doesn't have to be a number. Maybe it's to not drink pop for a month. Or maybe one a week. Or maybe you set a workout goal of 60 total minutes of exercise a day. I find that setting myself realistic goals for my fitness help me stay on track and not fall off the proverbial wagon. Cheers to you!

Time for another check-in: Start weight: 125 Start height: 5'2 Goal weight: 115 Date: 6/16/08 7/9/08: 122 8/11/08: 117 Yay! Slightly ahead of schedule and feeling great. I have to be honest, that I jumpstarted the weight loss by going on the South Beach diet to match up with the workout schedule. Worked like a charm. I was never eating that poorly to begin with, but my BF and I decided to do it together. Definitely helps to have a partner when starting a new eating plan. We both love to cook and come up with lots of ways to make meals interesting. Once day one passed, I didn't even miss my bread or pasta. It's amazing when you track what you eat and see where you're loading your bod with empty cals - bread, beer, etc. I don't feel hunger cravings anymore, and the BF claims to have more energy throughout the day and doesn't have that desire to nap. If I could hug this diet, I would. Bringing back fruits and whole wheat/grain carbs will be nice though, for variety purposes. We'll still be tracking on Daily Plate our intakes - since at the end of the day, the whole thing is calories in vs. calories out. Sticking with cardio and strength training, and I can't wait to hit the goal and flaunt it in Hawaii! It helps that everyone on this site is very supportive and gives great advice/personal tips from experience. Kudos to you, and to everyone taking on a fitness challenge!

Update! Start weight: 125 Start height: 5'2 (unchanging) Goal weight: 115 Date: 6/16/08 Current weight: 122 Date: 7/9/08 A little behind the 1 lb a week mark, which puts me on target for the goal weight come September! Also had a slightly lazy holiday weekend which I'm sure set me back. I made it to the gym once or twice, but definitely slacked on the healthy eating. But how is one to resist with all of that food and alcohol just begging to be consumed? America insisted. Have to admit that the slow results are a bit frustrating, when it feels like I'm otherwise working my ass off. But, slow and steady wins the race, etc. Provided that I don't go on a binge eating streak once I hit the goal and give up exercise entirely, I'll be able to maintain without doing anything drastic, and will have gotten right to where I want to be. Keeping a variety of exercises is the other challenge. The only intense cardio I can tolerate is the elliptical machine. Running quite bores me and I always struggle to keep it up. But I'm able to work difference muscle groups on alternate days and incorporate yoga poses when it suits me. Stretching is my favorite thing to do!

    Lord Stanley's Summer Tour 2008

Cup was at Little Italy in Northville on Friday - Ken Holland brought it in! We've seen him dine there before, so it wasn't a surprise. That same night, Ozzie and Drapes were spotted with an unidentified cohort at a couple of downtown Plymouth bars. Cup was not in tow, but it did remind me that I have to move back to Plymouth ASAP!

Good luck to everyone with their goals! Summer is a good time to get motivated and stick with it! I'm on the pound a week plan too, but as MSUDJ19 said, losing inches is almost as important, if not more. The BF and I are going to Hawaii in September, so I've got just about 12 weeks to lose 10 lbs (or at the very least, acheive bikini bod, etc.) Start weight: 125 Start height: 5'2 (unchanging) Date: 6/16/08

Sharp: Wings should retire Hasek's "39"

More proof that Drew Sharp has absolutely zero credibility in writing a hockey article. He should stick to writing negative pieces about the Tigers. Retire #39? Give me a break.
