Learn2LuvIt got a reaction from rick zombo in 9/23 Exhibition GDT : at Red Wings 4, Chicago Blackhawks 1
I love me some Z...but the fact of the matter is that Z has never had great speed. At the beginning of his career he was a tad above average (NHL standards), but not so much anymore. I saw that he looked a little sluggish last night, but I'm not reading into it at all. He's matching up in the pre-season against much younger guys, whom a lot are headed back to the AHL soon, he tends to look slow(er). He's playing against guys who are fighting for a job, and this is playoff hockey to them. Some of these guys will actually never make it full time to the NHL and they realize this, so they are pushing as hard as they possible can. Z is likely to be int he mindset of getting in game shape, getting his timing back, working on line communication,....just another day of preparation for whent he real season starts.
Elite players aren't neccesarrily the fastest players on the ice, nor are he fastest players on the ice neccesarrily elite. Z is absoltuley and elite player and I don't use the word "elite" lightly.
Z brings so much more in terms of hard work, determination, hockey smarts, and both underrated passing and hands. At least he's not Larry Murphy (toward end of career) slow, or Homer (toward end of career) slow,...now they looked like they were skating in slow motion.

I'll dedicate my loyalty as a consumer for life...to any company that buys all the Wings jersey sponsorship slots and makes them blank, and matches the same color jersey as they are wearing on any given night. Unless feminine/lady products, I will swear my financial alliance to this company. God help me if the company that did this is a horrible tasting beer...I guess I'd be drinking many for the "the team".

Didn't you know!! Every great coach in history came out of the womb with NHL coaching experience and never had to get behind the bench as a rookie. "We all got a break and started somewhere"...that's not true for great coaches though. It's a genetically tested for trait. "Learning the ropes"...nah, not great coaches...these guys were SURE THINGS. Duh!!

Learn2LuvIt got a reaction from kipwinger in Next Number to be retired
Being in the rafters is very, very rarefied air. And I would hope to keep it that way. I wouldn't have any considerations of anyone as of right now. The only possibilities are with Dats and Z depending how long and how prosperous their careers carry on-and it looks doubtful right now. IMO...it's a slippery slope to start making stretches on players being in the rafters if it's not a dead on LOCK. The criteria, the numbers, the intangibles, fan perception, etc.. then become relevant arguments. If it's not a "no brainer", then the answers NO. If you put Fedorov up there, then you'll have people asking why Shanny isn't up there, or Ozzy...and on-and-on it will go.
btw...I have hopes that this organization will be around in 50-100 years from now, so is there a rush to start filling the rafters??

go back to the franzen signs extension thread...not EVERYBODY was happy. Most, as a matter of fact, hated the term and a lot of us, me included, thought it was too high cap hit in order to make the team better.
most of that thread had a lot of people NOT liking something about it. Again, if you read entire posts instead of just looking for things that may support your opinion, you'd be a bit wiser.

Learn2LuvIt got a reaction from canadian wings fan in 12/21 GDT : Avalanche 2 at Red Wings 1 (SO)
I've held off on promoting this in the past, but I think it's now viable to discuss replacing Franzen. Why is viable now...because he is not in our top 3 offensive group anymore. Yes, he has 19 points thus far and an assist machine. However, at a cap hit of $4M...I think his offensive numbers actually make him trade-able at this cap hit.
    1. I'd replace him with someone younger who can produce for us for the next five years.
    2. He's 34, and a big boy, father time and father injury are not in his favor.
    3. The assists are great, but we need goal scorers.

I've always thought that top coaches are well worth the big money. They don't count against the salary cap. So why wouldn't a team pay a extra for an advantage that doesn't go against the cap?? Coaches salaries are a drop in the overall budget when your looking at 70 Million $ player payrolls annually.

Learn2LuvIt reacted to toby91_ca in Datsyuk or Fedorov?
    1. In answering for myself, Fedorov was the better player. In terms of Wings fans in general, I wouldn't be surprised if more said Datsyuk, for several reasons: he didn't have a nasty exit from the team, for a long time now (at forward), the team has been him and Zetterberg, there were more greats around in Fedorov's day + timing thing, Datsyuk's more current.
    2. Fedorov should get in fairly easily, but his offensive stats tailed off (under 1ppg, under 500 goals), but he was better all around than anyone + playoff stats are good and he has the major awards to back him up. Also, being the highest scoring Russian in league history will help. Ovechkin will likely pass him, Datsyuk won't, but either way, Fedorov will have held that title for many years.
    3. I'm honestly not sure about Datsyuk getting in. Then again, it's always hard to say. There are worse players in than Datsyuk, but there are also better players that haven't made it.

Learn2LuvIt got a reaction from GMRwings1983 in Who is YOUR most under-appreciated/unsung Red Wing?
Rafalski. He did it all...and did it all at a world class level. Unfortunately, as so happens when you play with one of the best ever at a particular position, he was often overshadowed by Nick. I also think Nick learned a lot from him on the blue line in terms of offense. I have seen very few "skate the line" with the puck like Rafalski did. At the beginning of his term with us, he was much better at this than Nick. His lateral movement with the puck at the blue line to find a shooting lane was second to none. As a result, Nick soon became much improved at this, and eventually you'd have to say that they were equally as good. But Rafalski was underrated in my opinion.

Ok, I'm reading all of this trade bashing. Can someone tell me exactly what Jarnkrok has done on the NHL level that makes this so outraging? He's 3rd on the Griffs in points. Yes, he shows some promise...it get it. I get the "young talent", "ton of potential" thing...but has anyone looked at our current roster?? We are extremely heavy on really young guys. Our brass has said (and done well with for the most part) the theory on experienced players and their being counted on to perform in the playoffs. We knew if we wanted to get any player today, we would have to give up a piece of our young talent. So....am I outraged that we lost Calle Jarnkrock in a trade today...not really....in fact, I think looking at all of our young talent losing a soft Euro with the proverbial "great hands", who has hinted that he wants to go home to Sweden and play, is actually a decent price to play for a veteran like Legwand.
