A few on some other non-LGW forums, and I heard a local sports radio guy comment that the money was "a little rich" considering some of his struggles last year.
I love the deal from a team perspective though.  We got a great deal on him.  Let's keep him happy, give him a little rope, let him play, and let him go full on BEAST mode.
If he does have a few bumps in the road this year, and I hear any chatter about him going down to GR for any reason, I'm sending that person a box of bee's.

Whatever .  You all are missing out.  I just met a guy through the "spam" who, for certain political reasons, needs someone in the United States to help him stash his wealth of over 5 $billion dollars.  He's giving me half of his fortune as soon as he verifies my Social Security# and bank account info which I just emailed him.  You guys are a bunch of suckers.  Now I'm a billionaire.  I win.  You lose.  Can't decide on a mega yacht or a private island as my first expenditure.  Maybe both.

But doesn't the fact that he plays for Michigan automatically make him eligible for the Red Wings "Hometown Hero", over-hype player package and supreme loyalty for the next seven years??

Here's the funny thing, if we were able to land Stamkos that summer, everyone would be singing Datsyuk praises for the huge favor he did for this team. But we didn't and now it's like he's being ostracized for not staying the one last season.

IMO- I didn't really view Dats departure as being on negative terms.  He said for years he wanted to return home to Russia to raise his kids and live out the rest of his life.  In my book, that's fair of him to do. Does it tarnish is legacy within the Wings organization and fan base, highly likely.  However, I think what he did was on the up-and-up and transparent.

I think the optics/feelings that he's disappointing, once again stem back to the Wings "hype" train that we often fall victim (me included).  The early articles about how we were so lucky to get DD.  Kenny really pulled all of the strings to get the home town boy to come play for the Wings.  The words "coveted" and "sweepstakes" were being throw around.  Blah, blah, blah.  Another guy that we put up on a pedestal for no performance based reason, overpay, and expect them to be good/great NHL players.
Granted every young player comes with some risk, but if DD were not from Detroit, not played at WMU, his dad had not been friends with Kenny, then I don't think he'd ever have been on our team.  Both by his choice and ours.
He's okay.  Average.  Overpaid.  Looking at history, probably won't develop further into the player of the hype he was receiving.  Our organization just has issues recognizing this, putting fair market-value offers out to these players even at the risk of losing them.
This systemic hype/loyalty "thing" the Wings organization consistently falls prey to is becoming a character flaw.

This is exactly what I expected.  Mantha to be Franzen like and people to start complaining about him once they figured out he wasn't going to be the second coming of Shanahan.
Bingo.  "HE'S BIG!  AND A LOCAL BOY!  FUTURE TOP PAIR GUY MAYBE EVEN A #1!!!!!!"
Oh, he's only an average 2nd pair guy?  What a bum.
MANTHA IS BIG AND SCORED A TON IN JUNIORS HE'S GONNA SCORE 50 GOALS A YEAR IN THE NHL AND HIT AND FIGHT AND BE MEAN AND NASTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, he's going to score 25-30 goals and go stretches where he looks invisible and not use his size like a wrecking ball?  He's a bum.

This is truly the secret to why the Wings became the powerhouse they did. Willingness to explore foreign markets.
Konstantinov, Federov, Lidstrom, Kozlov, Datsyuk, Fischer, and Zetterberg to name the biggest. If there was a fair playing field in Europe at the time we would not have obtained even half those guys.
I'd say the end to that European drafting advantage was about 2003.

That ownership was dumb enough to allow these players on their teams to begin with, some of whom were cancer to the lockerroom. At least our ownership has the sense to screen for these players ahead of time. Cavs fcked up when they signed Isiah Thomas earlier in the year, he was a known cancer. But ownership got selfish to win another championship. In the end they got rid of him at deadline anyways.
I’d rather want the owners who don’t make dumb decisions to start with.
And lol don’t think Gilbert is some hero, the only reason the Cavs are relevant is because of Lebron James. When he left they went to s***, when he came back they got good. If he leaves again they will suck again. That’s basketball for you.
Look at the class of players on this team. Larkin is classy as f*** for his age, already a leader. AA had attitude issues but now is disciplined and harderworking. Mrazek is coming back down to earth as well. We groom the even the s***ty attitude guys to become role models.

Maltby has been a favorite of mine since his first game as a Wing. He got into a fight and thus began a long and wonderful ride of him being a premier pest. He was so fun to watch.

IMO - Marchand falls in the the same type of player that was Kirk Maltby.  Malts would have been suspended a lot more if he played in today's NHL.  And gosh, I loved me some Malts.  He was such an understated, valuable piece, to our run of Cups.

Maltby is also smart enough to adapt to todays game though. Marchand makes these mistakes and doesn't learn from them which ends up hurting the team. Lucic does a lot of goonish things and fights and hell even scores but I don't think his history of suspensions is nearly as bad as Marchands.
Be a goon, but be a smart one that can help the team.. And in Marchands case he's all sensitive because people keep calling him a goon. It's like.. you are a goon, just accept it. Don't think Maltby even denied his role. Lucic certainly doesn't.

I'd love to see the Leafs lose in game 7 of the SCF on an overturned goal call.  Guaranteed their would be a serious and substantial effort by the Toronto consortium of hockey elite to either replay the entire game, or extend the series to a "best of 9" games.  Bettman would abide.

Totally agree.  Previously I watched him play, and thought that he was another Griff here for the short term...looked like he was playing over his head.  Lately, he looks like a confident NHL player who is making great plays, making the players around him better, seeing the ice nicely, calm and collected/no panic, etc.  Helm and some of our other players who are a bit older/more experience had better get their act together.  Some of our young guys are playing like they are here to stay and possibly taking jobs away from others.  Love it.
