Why do people say we need a 2nd line center?

This topic comes up a lot, it is a pertinent one. But what seems to be forgotten is that splitting up Hank and Pasha is TREASON. They ought to play on the first line TOGETHER with Homer.

    Peca?

You just defeated your purpose. I know you are not too serious about this but Peca is not what we need. Peca could play for free for Detroit and I still would not want him.

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

Nobody here is overly fond of Sammy. I do not care about him. I would rather have him than have Lapointe. Case closed.

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

You are a different breed of fan. Almost all of the people on this board know Ken Holland, not personally obviously. But when you are attatched to a team for so long and you follow that team and such you learn the GMs characteristics and Ken Holland does not really trade players away who had one mediocre year for a player who had a mediocre year and is older. Hollland trades away youth and guys like Williams when he gets something back. Dealing away picks and prospects for guys like Lang and Bertuzzi who were stars in the league at one point. Williams for Calder was a simple trade, Williams was on the block and had fallen out with Babs, he needed to be moved. Samuelsson does not have the same situation as Williams, he is not being shopped. We are not complaining, we are stating the obvious. We have Martyesque players already, why go and burn 1.2 million when we have such players already? It is a waste of money, money that we do not HAVE to waste. We have to lock up our own UFAs and pitch to others with only 10 million. Yes Crymson is a poster. Yes, I agree with him on this topic. I have also not agreed with him many times in the past. But the one thing I RESPECT (not worship) about him is the LOGIC involved in his posts. I do not know Crymson, I know OF Crymson, he has been an LGW member for about as long as I have and again, he is a LOGICAL poster which is something this board needs a bit more of.

Defense does win championships. I am well aware of such. But Selanne was an integral part of their success, if you dont see that, its not my problem. Martain Lapointe is 33...WHO GIVES A s***? He could be 23 and I still would not want him because he is not what we need. He can fight, big deal. Watch, this season, Sammy will out perform Marty. Face it, his better days are behind him. Chicago is not shopping Marty, they are shopping his salary. Thankfully, Ken Holland is our GM and not kindlwillbegreat. Any Wings fan knows damn well that Kenny would not trade Sammy for Martin Lapointe, now dont go crazy saying that I think I know Holland. I know his characteristics and I am sure there are people who know what I am talking about. He cannot come cheap. He deserves league minimum. There are many UFAs that we should think about over Marty. Marty should not even be thought of. If you do not know who who Crymson is or if you have not heard of him before you should be banned from LGW. Its pretty much impossible to not know who Crymson is.

Did I say anything about Neidermayer, Pronger and Giggy not being a reason? No. Those guys are all on defense and they did a great job of holding down the fort. But Selanne held his own on the offensive side of things. All in all, Teemu was an integral part of them winning the cup.

Bottom line is, we have role players. We do not have room for Marty. We have solid two way players who play physical. We just do not have a fighter. Our past playoff campaign showed that we can be physical. You do not need to fight to win. A protecting player would be okay, but it is not at the top of the priority list. Now, as for the statement seen in bold above. Selanne had 15 points in the playoffs, 5 goals, 2 game winners. I know Anaheim has depth, but to replace Selanne's leadership, drive to win and his production is not possible. Getzlaf and Perry both had great numbers but to say that they would have won without Selanne come on, wake up dude.

Selanne was still a strong hockey player. He was well and capable of sucess, he played well when he was a Shark but the one bad year he had as an Av is the only bad thing I can remember about him. Again, it seems as though Lapointe and Selanne are ebing thrown into the same category. Selanne was, is an will always be looked at as an elite goal scorer in the NHL. He is/was far more likely to elevate a team to success. It almost seems as if you're saying if Lapointe comes back he will influence us and we will win the cup. Bullocks, if Lapointe came back to Detroit, he would not help us, we would not win the cup and if we did win the cup Lapointe would not deserve credit for winning it. Now, Selanne went back to Anaheim and won a cup, try to find someone that thinks Anaheim could have won it without Selanne, you wont be able to. Selanne is an impact player, Lapointe is a role player, a third liner as you said. A team can only have so many third liners, and we have ours already buddy so just drop it. Fedorov WAS elite yes, when he left us and left his linemates behind he was not much. He had 33 goals with the Ducks I believe, but he has done dick all ever since leaving us as far as I am concerned. Bringing people back if the price is right is highly nostalgic when you are speaking of players who were once on our team and presently will not be able to make a great contribution. We have experience and a lot of it. We have leaders, Chelios, Draper, Lids, Maltby, Zetterberg, Hasek are all experienced leaders. Reason for Edit: Too pissed off to contain myself after seeing F. Michael's post. Oh and snowman, you are a good man. To, F. Michael Guys on our roster that can play on our third line next season: Draper, Maltby, Cleary, Franzen, Filppula, Kopecky. That is 6 guys, two lines of guys who could potentially be third liners. Flip probably wont be on the third, I say second. But we have five grinder like guys. Cleary, Franzen and Kopecky also make nothing compared to Lapointe and are not nearly as old as he is.

    Soccer!

I have not been here in a while. Henry to Barca pisses me off, but what are you going to do? I am happy with my boys Bayern, getting Ze Roberto back. Luca Toni, I do not know what to think. I mean, if they are after Klose, why get Toni? They're the same type of player, a marksman in the centre of the box. Oh and, WOOO! RIBERY!

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

Okay, he is 33 even though he will be 34 when the season starts. I have no problem with older players. But the fact that he won cups with us in the past is not a reason to bring him back. D-Mac won cups with us and I think he was better than Lapointe. Should we bring him back? He is only 35. He is a better fighter and he is a good locker room guy. But no, it does not mean we should sign him. We are moving in a new direction and we do not need Lapointe or McCarty. Every off season we deal with threads that implies the thought of us re-acquiring a Wing of past (97 or 98). Feds, Kozlov, Lapointe, McCarty. Last summer, Aaron Ward was available and I along with a lot of other board members thought he would be a good guy to sign. Why? Because he had just won a Stanley Cup and he was a big reason to his team's success and he is still a solid defenseman. It had nothing to do with the fact that he won cups with us in the past. We have to live in the present. Fedorov, McCarty and Lapointe have all seen their better days in hockey and we should not get any of them back. I am a HUGE Feds fan and I would love to see him come back, but in the REAL world I do not want it to happen because the Red Wings are an NHL hockey team not some shop that collects past nostaligic items. Kozlov, imo is a catch 22. He is clearly capable at playing at a very high level as his stats from last season show but do we need him? We need secondary scoring and he could provide that, but do we need another small forward? No. When you look at re-acquiring a player, it must be thought out in a mindset of the present as in "what can this guy do to help our team out NOW" not "look what this guy DID to help our team out THEN." Ignorance pisses me off like you would not beleive.

How are you going to put Martin Lapointe in a comparative category with Teemu Selanne and Chris Chelios? Selanne and Chelios are two of the better players of their generation. Martin Lapointe is a role player, we have enough of them. Chelios and Selanne are able to excel because they are just flat out better than Lapointe, more skilled. They are also in better shape. Players are still performing at a high level at older ages yes, but those guys were elite players in the past. Lapointe was never ever an elite hockey player. He played on a line with Shanahan and I think that is something that you have overlooked greatly.

No and no. I would vomit all of my innards out if either of those guys became a Red Wing, epsecially Carter. (grammar)

How many here have played hockey?

I have played hockey for 13-14 years. All year, ice, summer, roller. I am a hockey fiend. I learned how to skate when I was four and I started playing hockey the next year. Captain of my team for years.

Cleary is gritty, and far better than Lapointe. He is also a 20 goal scorer of sorts. I know he is not a fighter, but he is the definition of grit. Oh, he is also a very solid defensive player and a great penalty killer. He was also great in the playoffs he had 12? 13 points? In the 18 games we played.

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

Lapointe does not fight on a regular basis. During the prime Bert years in Vancouver, Bertuzzi fought a bit and held his own. Bert can fight, but I guess only when its necessary. Marty has a few years left, yes, hopefully those years are not played in Detroit.

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

Past few seasons? It was his second year with the team. In his first he played very well and went pretty much injury free, hence why he was brought back. Shanahan wont be here to help Lapointe like he did during the two cups in the 90s.

Who Do We Pick On Now Thread...

I mean I like the guy and I know he has great skill already and he has potential. But I am losing patience. Maybe if we chnaged our team colours to Yellow and Blue?

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

You missed some fun times last season. Some guys here thought we could get anything we wanted for Williams and Lilja. I think we should hang onto Hudler. Meech holds no trade value imo, a draft pick for him is decent. He is not that great. I would be pissed if we lost Quincey. I do not really think Pitkanen is necessary. Lebda, Kindl and Kronwall will be our offensive minded defensemen for the future. I would like to think that we are set there, I mean nothing there is too shaky.

Who Do We Pick On Now Thread...

Is Kronwall having an injury free season even possible?
  24. superstarsingh

Would you trade Samuelsson for Lapointe?

Players get hit and injured. It is part of hockey. Would I like to have a player to stand up for Dats and Zetts? Yes. Not when he is 33 years old, not what he once was and highly overpaid. When Bertuzzi is healthy (assuming he comes back) he can serve as a guy who can proctect and PRODUCE. I am well aware of what free speech is, I welcome people to use it. But when you are saying that we should trade Sammy for Lapointe, I get uneasy.

WHO ARE WE GOING TO TRADE FOR PITKAKEN IN REALITY? There is no way to land him without loosing Kronwall or Kindl. Hudler for Pitkanen is the dumbest thing I have heard since the Williams and Lilja for Smyth suggestions.
