WingsallTheway reacted to kylee in Griffins Calder Cup Playoffs Thread
we should promote the Griffins coach because he's won at every level

WingsallTheway reacted to DickieDunn in Jacob Trouba
I don't see Trouba being worth that. Right now he's the #2 on a non playoff team. Detroit is getting a top 10 pick for the first time in forever, they need to use it and try to hit a home run, either through the draft or by getting a guy who's already a #1.

WingsallTheway got a reaction from Gordie Howe hat trick in Jagr
Not sure what the numbers are for career totals, but I see Jagr probably playing next season as well..
at this point of his career he has the knack of disapearing for 58 minutes then putting a point on the board, so hes pretty consistent in that way. Seems to have a knack for getting points

I'd still take Datsyuk for 40 games over Vanek for the next 5 seasons

WingsallTheway got a reaction from Gordie Howe hat trick in Tom McCollum heads to LA for PTO w/Kings
I was under the impression he was under contract for one more season but I probably just wasn't paying enough attention
Good for him, he has potential to be a good backup. He stepped up this season but it seems like Coreau stepped up even more.

WingsallTheway got a reaction from Internet.Unknown in Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread
I'll have to disagree, but of course theres no way of knowing because its all speculation
Larkin, prior to the end of the past season, had never played 82 games in a season before. NCAA teams play roughly 40 games a year, at a decreased level of intensity. Add the travel schedule and pressure of the NHL, and its pretty easy to get winded at the halfway point of the season. I fully expect Larkin to be more consistent this season.

WingsallTheway got a reaction from PavelValerievichDatsyuk in Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread
We can't really compare Larkin and AA right now because AA didn't play 80 games at the NHL level. (or at all)
Larkin started off blowing everyone out of the water at the beginning of the season, but he started to slow down. This could have just as easily happened to AA and I think we are going to see exactly what kind of player he will become this upcoming season. I think people really under value the ability of players to play 80 games consistently
Having said that, I'm just as excited about AA as I am with Larkin. I think we have two different types of players here, but AA is probably the closest thing we will get to Datsyuk for a long time

Why do you refuse to believe Holland would trade a prospect for a dwindling player to come play in Detroit and retire?

WingsallTheway got a reaction from Aethernum in Glendening signs 4-year, $1.8m AAV extension
That is completely false
Peak age is 26-30 both physically and mentally. Its more of a case-by-case basis but there is no way players are best at 23. If I have a good player at that age i get really excited because there is ample room for growth
Especially in the case of a defensive player, the mental game is half the battle. You have to try things and gain experience to shut guys down, so Glendenning will get better

WingsallTheway reacted to kickazz in Should any of #91, #13, #40, #30 be retired? Poll/Discussion
I will say that of the four people listed here 3 were involved in contract drama (Osgood, Fedorov and Datsyuk). In terms of being a "True Red Wing", Zetterberg probably is likely the most loyal one. He lacks in individual hardware though. Doesn't have 3 Selke's and 4 Lady Byngs nor does he have a Hart Trophy and only has 1 Stanley cup.

Helm is the only guy who can do it !!!

WingsallTheway reacted to kliq in Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread
Agreed. Players only take paycuts for 3 reasons.
1) Resigning with their existing team that they feel a connection with
2) Hometown team
3) To win a cup
Staal to Detroit does not fall under any of these categories.

WingsallTheway reacted to xtrememachine1 in Darren Helm re-signed: 5 years, $3.85m AAV
I'm actually happy Helm is back. I'm not thrilled about the money, but it was necessary to keep him. I can see that most of you didn't want him back, especially at that price, but the truth is, if we lose Helm we're going to be a slower team. I think our options were to either sign Helm at 3.85 or sign a different player, who is slower or has similar production for $4 mil or more. Different doesn't mean better. Sometimes better means trying something different. Carl Hagelin, who I feel is a similar player to Helm, had numbers similar to Helm before he was put on a good line with Bonino and Kessel. Helm could very well be the same way. Put him on a line with AA or Larkin and Tatar or trade for Nash or sign Vanek and that line could produce big numbers.

Z isn't as good anymore so playing with him isn't as awesome as it used to be. Nyquist plays with Tatar who has some of the best possession numbers on the team (better than Zetterberg's) .. Not to mention Nyquist plays against lesser competition more often than not as well.
Additionally Abdelkader's ice time also goes towards penalty killing. About 1.5 minutes per game he plays shorthanded. Something Nyquist doesn't do.
Even with less ice time, Nyquist managed to take more shots on goal over the course of the year. Yet Abdelkader had 4 game winning goals to Nyquist's 3.
No matter how one cuts it. Abdekader makes less money, has about the same points as Nyquist and does more on ice with penalty killing, blocked shots, hits (team leader for hits btw) and fighting.
I'd say for all the things I listed, in terms of money the Red Wings management is getting a bigger bang for their buck with Abdelkader's deal compared to Nyquist's deal at the moment.

WingsallTheway reacted to Buppy in Calder finalists
Eichel had only 8 more points than McDavid, in 36 more games. I don't think it takes any ifs and assumptions to say that McDavid was the better player. If he wins it I wouldn't like it, but I think he deserved the nomination.
I also think Gost should win. Phenomenal performance for a rookie defenseman.

People are actually upset that Mcdavid was a finalist instead of Larkin?
Mcdavid has just as many points in half the amount of games....
edit: Mcdavid had more points in half the amount of games
