Who and What are the Detroit Red Wings?

The glory (Cup) years, character and signature play are history, leaving what appears to be a wandering identity with team management and players equally unsure. Every organization has a “formula for success”. Just a handful, however, can claim their system works – wins championships. The Wings were one of those teams. New more offense-oriented NHL (goals at measly 2.66/game), 3 on 3 OTs and rules package has the Wings searching for answers and a clear path to more consistency, competitiveness and wins. “You are what your record says you are.” Today, they are a .500 team and probably a bubble team to make the playoffs. But more unsettling and costly is the lack of effective attention to the back end. The Wings neither have a “stopper” on defense nor in goal. Last night’s game against the Caps is perfect example: Evgeny Kuznetsov skates by Zetterberg, Kronwall’s late to the party and Mrazek is not sure what to do. It was a 3 on 3 situation, but the scenario and outcome have been replicated during regulation in many games … and will continue to be repeated throughout this season. No one on the current roster has stepped up to the challenge. Grand Rapids’s D-core: Ouch! The 2016 UFAs roster is underwhelming on defense. Ken Holland and Jeff Blashill will have to leave their comfort zone and part with some of the young assets. I suggest the first place to look is Anaheim. What will it take to get Hampus Lindholm?

  3. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/philadelphia-flyers-trade-chris-pronger-nicklas-grossmann-to-coyotes-for-sam-gagner/ If there's one thing that will happen with each new CBA, it's new and interesting ways to get around the cap. I know we've already seen bad contracts traded for players that may never play in the league again... but now we're seeing players that aren't even in the league (permanent LITR) and are employed by the league! FFS are we reaching a new low?
  4. Chicago received defenseman Trevor Daley and forward Ryan Garbutt for Sharp and defensemanStephen Johns. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=774543&navid=nhl:topheads
  5. Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 2m2 minutes ago Erik Cole traded to Detroit, pending trade call I like it Kenny! Hopefully it wasn't for too much Edit: Complete deal is Cole and a conditional 2015 3rd-round pick (Dallas keeps pick if Detroit reaches ECF and Cole plays in 50% of games), for (D) Mattias Backman, © Mattias Jamark and a 2015 2nd-round pick.
  6. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=733014&navid=nhl:topheads The NY Islanders have acquired defenseman Johnny Boychuk from the Boston Bruins for two second round picks and a conditional third round pick. They also acquired defenseman Nick Leddy from the Chicago Blackhawks for Tj Brennan, Ville Pokka and Anders Nilsson. Great pickups by the Isles, their backend looks decent after these moves.
  7. Didn't see this mentioned in the game thread, and don't have a link, however I did see the interview between periods of the Maple Leafs game. Mick asked a few questions, can't remember them specifically, but the big one I do remember is Holland telling Mickey that "he is expecting to make a trade by the end of the first half of the season". They followed up with some clips of ferraro and callahan, not sure if they were implying those two. Anyone else see the interview? Can't remember if Holland was referencing a RH Dman. What are your thoughts?

    Datsyuk's Practice Drills Videos

Hey Red Wings Fans, I want to say I'm Pavel Datsyuk's biggest fan - but then I thought I may be threatened...so I will just say I'm a huge fan! Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any videos of Datsyuk doing this drill in a practice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnRcNgFYP6w I heard he does it a lot, but haven't been able to find a video of it. Please share ANY and ALL Pavel Datsyuk practice videos here - I know me and a lot of my friends want to see the type of work Pasha puts in to get his magical handles.
  12. So Tanguay is back in Colorado. Interesting move, he has a few good years left.

  14. I don't understand. Another year and no big moves for the Wings, AGAIN. I understand that Holland keeps saying we have good young talent, but when it comes down to it, we'll have young talet and then older players that are past their prime. Pav, Hank, Mule, Kronner, are not getting any younger, and Pav may be gone after next season. Cleary, Samuelsson, and Bert are done(or should be) after this year. Helm is a good young player with lots to prove still, but the past few seasons he has had major injuries that kept him out of games for a long period of time. Holland also said that he wants to add another top 6 forward. Well Mr. Holland, how come we didn't make any noise in the past few days in the trade market?

    Lombardi traded to Phoenix

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=413721 Traded by the leafs, back to a team he's already played for. Leafs get a conditional pick in the deal. The guy has a lot of speed, but never performed like many thought he would. Will see if Dave Tippett can turn him into something useful.

    Ryan trade is a must!

Red Wings need a solid right hand shot on the first line to play with datsyuk. Trade Franzen, Nyquist, and draft picks.
  20. @HeleneStJames https://twitter.com/...464998429687809 #RedWings have inquired about Rick Nash, but CBJ doesn't want to trade him to Detroit. Wings would have to blow Blue Jackets out of water. _____ For what it's worth. Holland isn't shy about making the rounds. Due diligence or more?

    Blake Wheeler?

Age 25 Height: 6'5" Weight 205 lbs Position Right-wing I've been following him for awhile. Went fifth overall in the '04 draft ('yotes). He had a pretty rough go of it in his first several years on The Big Stage (though technically they weren't full seasons). He could've easily fallen off the face of the earth like so many in that spot do. What I like is that he didn't. He owned up to his shortcomings (e.g. serious lack of confidence, not nearly physical enough, questionable hockey IQ) and committed himself to improving upon them. It's paid off for him: he was good for 64 points (17 goals, 47 assists) last season, in 80 games played. (Of course, it helps that he flanks Evander Kane on the Jets' top line.) They love him in Winnipeg. I'd love him on the Wings. What would it take to land him, and would it be worth it? If we could add Semin and Wheeler and lose, by way of trade, just one of Flip and Franzen (or could Wheeler be had without losing either of the two?), I'd be very happy with our top-6.

    High End Trade Options

Now that Staal has rejected a 10 year deal from the Pens, things get interesting. Nash isn't the only high end player possibly on the trading block. Bobby Ryan's name has floated around too. It would be interesting to see how the individual value of the players pans out now that there are multiple options for teams to trade for. What do you think it would take for each of these guys (considering we trade for 1): Nash (6 seasons $7.8mill) Ryan (3 seasons $5.1mill) Staal (1 season $4mill) I'd say our top trading asset would be Filppula. Then others include Franzen, Abdelkader, Picks, Prospects. So if we miss out on Semin and Parise who would you prefer, and let's hear what your proposal would be?
