Australian Football League

I'm hoping that you guys know something about my favourite sport. The Australian Football League is a brilliant game, one that you should start to take an interest in. That may sound stupid, but hey I'm an Aussie and I'm a huge fan of the NHL. Ask me any anything you would like to know about the game, because I would like nothing more than you to be interested.

The average attendence this season is about 37,000 per match.

Each side has 22 players, 18 on the ground at one time, with 4 on the interchange.

Finals (playoffs) start in September, and my team the Adelaide Crows are currenly in second position.

I used to enjoy watching the AFL when I didn't know the rules and it looked a bit crazy. Then someone explained the rules to me and I now think it is a very boring stupid game. I even played it once but I didn't enjoy it.

Why do AFL teams have such *** uniforms?

How exactly are they ***? And what rules are stupid that made the game seem boring and stupid to you?

You're darn right Ryan Barnes, Aussie Rules is not for the timid. That's what makes our game so great, the hardiness and committment they show each week is awesome.

Was watching a bit of an AFL game on TV the other day, think it was Geelong v Western Bulldogs. Pretty boring game.

The AFL is a long way behing the NRL for quality and entertaining football. Can't wait for the Brisbane Broncos v St.George-Illawarra Dragons game on Sunday cool.gif

The NRL doesn't even compare to the AFL. The AFL is far more populair in Australia and rightfully so. The Western Bulldogs vs Geelong game was quite good, I don't possibly know how you could find it boring, especially when you like NRL....

That's funny, the Victoris football league bigger than the NRL! Maybe in Melbourne my friend but that says a lot about Melbourne really. Look at the TV ratings and you'll find the NRL is tops thumbup.gif

Here in Britain we get three live NRL games a weekend, the AFL gets one game of highlights on a weeks delay at strange hours.

That's funny, first of all you can't even spell Victoria correctly, and in Adelaide and Perth the ratings and attendances are clearly in favour of the AFL. In SA we couldn't even hold onto our NRL team because of poor public support. And look at the ratings, every week the footy rates amongst the top 10, so I don't know what your talking about.

Dodgy keyboard, what can I say rolleyes.gif

The ratings for the NRL Grand Final always outrate the AFL equivilant game with the NRL GF getting higher figures in Melbourne than the AFL GF does in Sydney or Brisbane. And let's not forget the massive ratings for Kangaroos internationals and State Of Origin.

The SA NRL team, was that the Adelaide Rams? Their demise owed more to politics and the very insular views of the NSW dominated ARL at the time rather than crowd figures which I believe weren't too bad.

Anyway, no need to quibble over who's bigger than who. Aussie Rules and Rugby League are two very tough competitve sports with both having a lot going for them. At least neither are as boring and tedious and unpopular as Rugby union laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

P.S. Are you watching The Ashes?

Yes I'm watching the Ashes but I've given up. None of our batsman deserve to be out there. Gillespie should retire. For the 4th Test I would bring is Hussey and Tait for Katich and Gillespie.

Geez you guys were lucky to escape that third test. Only the weather saved you mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

A guy from Australia recently showed me a DVD from last year's final. Aussie Rules is not for the timid.

Yeah - Well I consider myself a lifelong NHL fan - and that Aussie Rules Football looks too rough to me!

Not to mention - I don't get it. Seems like they bounce the ball for no appearant reason sometimes.

To each their own right?

Semi Finals

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9

Sydney Swans 7.14 (56) defeated Geelong 7.11 (53) at S.C.G.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10

Adelaide vs Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium

Anyone who doesn't like AFL should watch the last 30 minutes of the Sydney-Geelong game. It was the best action I have ever seen in my life. Sydney were down by 20 points in the last quarter, which was huge considering they had only put up 30 points midway through the final quarter. Swans forward Nick Davis scored 4 goals in the final term to send them into the Preliminary Finals.

Tomorrow night it's Adelaide vs Port Adelaide (equivalent to Detroit vs Colorado in the SC Finals). My team (Adelaide) are up agaisnt their fierce cross-town rivals.
