Leafs Lunch reported today that the Leafs and Steve Thomas have agreed on a one-year, $450k contract which will be finalized next week.

Wow, the leafs will either suck with half their team on IR, or it just might pay off. They won't win the cup or anything, but could squeak out a decent season.

They need a physical defenceman badly, or else they will get royally lit up.

Good signing. Stumpy will have a good year as long as he stays healthy (and maybe the guys around him too). I'd expect about ~40pts out of him and maybe some clutch scoring in the playoffs... if they make it.

Actually they have 3 Physical D's.
1.Bryan McCabe- Plus willing to drop the gloves once in a while.
2.Wade Belak- Always willing to drop the gloves.
3.Aki Berg- Plays the body well.

The Leafs' success will definately teeter on their teams health. Stumpy is a good pickup if healthy.
In a 2005 study published by the journal Nature, researchers at Durham University in England concluded that, across a range of sports, we found that wearing red is consistently associated with a higher probability of winning. The researchers also suggested that red's effect may subconsciously intimidate opponents in athletic contests, especially when the athletes are equal in skill and strength.

Not even close.
They got rid of Francis (42), Leetch (37), Johansson (38), Nieuwendyk (38), Roberts (39), Fitzgerald (37), Reichel (34), Renberg (33), Marchment (36) - so far & Kidd (33).
Replaced them all with younger players: Alexander Steen (21), Jeff O'Neill (29), Eric Lindros (32), Jason Allison (30), Alex Khavanov (33), Mikael Tellqvist (25) (or J.S. Aubin, whoever wins the backup job) & Carlo Colaiacovo (22).
They have gotten much younger, and aren't nearly the oldest team in the league anymore.

Yes, McCabe is a physical defenceman, but he's their only one.
Belak? Defence? That's a scary combo for ol' cement feet Wade.
Berg is as soft as a down pillow. As ol Harold Ballard once said of Inge Hammarstrom, can be applied to Berg, "He could go into a corner with half a dozen eggs in his pocket, and not break any of them!"
Berg has size, and lots of it, but he rarely, if ever, uses it.

I have yet to see that he signed...I saw that he is willing to play for $450,000 for 1 year. And he stated he would like to finish in toronto, the team has denied anything...
And what color is the sky in your world...

Signing Stumpy would be a good move. I'm surprised only the Leafs seem to be pursuing him. He's a decent forward who is big in the postseason.

I was listening to Stumpy on MOJO and he said himself he was willing to play for the minimum salary, and that he would love to finish his career with the Leafs, but they have not made a formal offer to him. He has had contact with the Leafs management and expressed his interest to play for Toronto, but Ferguson will contact him prior to training camp if they decide to give him that opportunity.
