Thompson basically just fired FAVRE!

I want to kill Ted Thompson. For those of you who don't know who he is; he's the Green Bay Packers GM. He just fired our head coach Mike Sherman.

Mike Sherman was 59-37 while he was head coach for the Pack.

Disincluding this year, his record was 55-25, with 3 straight NFC North division titles.

He lost his number 1 & 3 Wide Receivers this year, due to injury, as well as his #1 - #5 Running Backs. Yes, I didn't misprint. The packers we're playing their 6th running back of the season yesterday. Sherman has had absolutely NO talent aside from Favre, Driver and Henderson on offense, and that MORON Thompson fires him after one season, where the team got bit by the injury bug more than anyone, when it came to crucial positions.

Favre said, if Sherman is let go, that will all but guarantee he won't return. He said he doesn't want to play for a new coach for only one season. It won't do him or the Packers any good. In a sense, Thompson just fired the 3-time league MVP, 1-time Super Bowl Champion, and argueably the best quarterback to ever play the game.

Thompson you are a moron, you should be fired.

You've got cojones to complain about the Packers to what is largely a pro-Lions audience wink.gif

But since I don't have a foam slice of cheese blocking my vision, I can say that as long as Favre hangs around, the Packers will stink. Let's face it, he's played past his usefulness as a championship QB. He doesn't have the same zip on the ball, but he thinks he still does, hence the interceptions. It's officially over. People watching the Packers used to think "they're behind by 4, but Favre's got the ball in his hands....just wait and Favre will definitely pull this out." Now they wait for Favre to throw that game-ending interception. That's how you know - it's time to move on.

Not that I think Rodgers is so hot either. Favre is legendary, but it's time for him to hang them up.

I don't disagree with the firing of Capers, Tice, Haslett and Martz....but I have to agree with you on Sherman.

I think Sherman is a pretty damn good coach when his team is HEALTHY. The Packers got hit with the injury bug bad this year. I actually thought that he tried to keep the team competive with gado as running back.

This signals the end of the Brett Favre era. As a Lions fan, I will miss going against the packers and Favre.

I suppose you think Yzerman should retire too! wink.gif

Since you're a Lions fans, you probably haven't paid as much attention to the Packers and Favre as I have. Here's the deal, Favre looks a lot like he did when he was young. This season he threw a lot of interceptions, but at the same time 20 touchdowns. When he first played for the Pack, he had the same problem as he did this season. He has NO ONE to throw too. Driver is constantly double covered, since he was the only weapon in our receiving core. When he was able to get free, he and Favre hooked up for over 1,200 yards, just between the two of them. Favre always wants to make things happen. Sometimes that results in interceptions and sometimes it results in TD's. Favre is still argueably the second best quarterback in the league (Manning's got him currently though as he's in his prime, and has a world class team around him); but doesn't that remind you of someone back in the mid 90's?

That person is Brett Favre.

P.S. I realize this is a largely Lions crowd, but I am in the "Other Sports" category, so I feel its valid. Also, I'm focusing my complaining on Ted Thompson rather than the Packers.

We Lions fans always pay attention to the Packers. Mostly because the Pack is always beating us.

I don't think comparing Farve to Yzerman works here, because Yzerman would (or at least he seems like) he'd retire without a second thought if he thought he was hurting the team.

It does seem to be a tough call as to whether Farve is holding the Packers back. On one hand, its painfully obvious he doesn't have the skills he used to. But on the other hand, like you said, his team got racked with injuries this year. Who knows what would have happened if he stayed healthy.

Ultimately though, I think a guy like Farve has earned the right to retire on his own terms.

However, there is no way I'd say Farve is the 2nd best QB in the league right now.

I do actually think Yzerman should retire, soon as he finishes this season. What else can he accomplish? What else can Favre accomplish?

And if you think Favre is still the second best QB in the league.....yowza. There's a whole host of QBs I'd rather have.

Well, that's unfortunate for Green Bay. I always thought Sherman was a good fit there. Now, what happend to the Packers this year, who knows. Regardless, I don't think that was the right choice by their GM to do that. He did a great job coaching them and I'm sure he knew that Farve and Sherman had a very close relationship. With that said, even had Sherman not had gotten the boot, I think Farve is going to retire anyway, but this just officially made him retire -- not even think twice about it.

I was watching their last game against the Bears(I think that's who it was) and the fans started to chant "ONE MORE YEAR! ONE MORE YEAR!"...with the firing of Sherman, I really don't think Farve will be returning to GB, or the NFL for that matter.

He's had an oustanding career to say the least, and he will always be remembered around the league. If he comes back, I will be very, very shocked.

Firing Sherman was a good thing for the Lions - I don't think the Packers will be able to bring in someone better. Sherman had little talent to work with this season.

Now the Vikings' firing of Mike Tice, that worries me. Tice was holding the Vikings back. Not a good coach. Too bad the Vikes finally got smart.

The difference between the Favre & Yzerman situations is that the Red Wings can reduce Yzermans ice time to reflect his diminishing performance from what he was and still allow him to be effective in a reduced role. With Favre as a QB it's either he plays all game or he's benched, much harder situation.
