Playoffs?

They're going to be hard to beat the way they are playing right now. I expect a trip to the conference finals at least.

I have not seen any information on post-season ticket sales. They're not going to know dates, times, or opponents for a while so I doubt we hear anything before April at the earliest. I wouldn't worry about tickets selling out. I've been to a couple of Griffins playoff games and tickets are easy to come by.

This is very surprising the Griffins are a great team and they are not drawing fans. Do people just not care about minor league hockey or does Grand Rapids just have bad fans, look at the arena football team also in grandrapids, now grant it the rampage suck but im shocked tickets are so easy to come by for a team that is winning a lot

seems they do not draw only a couple of sell outs during the season Red and White game usually draws well and the opening game of the season than it goes down

Even being with the Red Wings you would think the attendence would have be tops not so

AHL just isn't an exciting league to watch compared to the IHL

I have seen more exciting ECHL and UHL game to tell you the truth

look at the AHL attendence overall not very good for a league that is 70 years old

cough cough

I believe that LAST night, the 18th, was the SEVENTH sell-out at the Van this season - I agree with one thing though - it shouldn't take special promos to do it -

The GRIFFINS are a GREAT TEAM, they're fun to watch, interact with, and overall they provide some much needed sport watching in the otherwise arid climate of sports in W. MICH. But, to compare them to the UHL is ludicrous - my nephews are HUGE fans of the Muskegon Fury, and they too, acknowledge that watching the Griffins is watching better hockey. For you doubters, WHY is is that when the GRIFFS call someone up from the FURY - they USUALLY can't cut it?

I find that people who say that the UHL or the ECHL provides more exciting hockey, just don't understand what the game is all about -

Yes in the beginning of the season, we were not drawing in the fans. Lots of that was due I believe to football season, people losing there jobs and a bad season last year. Once football season was done, I noticed more people at games especially on weekends; weekday games are notorious for low attendance, from what I’m told. Grand Rapids has very good fans; it showed in last night game.

Last night (3/17/06) on the way home from the game, we listen to the post game on WOOD, Last night (3/17/06) game was the 7th sellout equaling 1999-2000 season sellouts, if I heard it correctly. Therefore, I am not sure where you got your information. I think you will see at least 1 more regular season sell out. Once we get past the first round of the playoffs, I think you will see a few more sellouts. Heck, once we make it to the finials, you will probably see a bunch of close to sellouts.

Not to offend you, but are you a Fury fan? Seriously, it is how you watch the game. The company I work for has season tickets for the griffins. The company at times will help, I think, rent a suite at fury games at times, so I’ll hear different opinions. Some people who has been to both games will tell me they rather watch a griffin game and some say the like the fury. Therefore, as I said before, it is how you watch the game. Last night game was a very entertaining game and the night before was just out right brawl.

I found the current attendance for all of AHL.

ahl attendance

UHL games exciting??? Wrong

The griffs drew close to 12,000 fans but they also had Josh Gracin from American Idol fame performing between periods so that obviously helped. With High School hockey in the state done that helps too.

The Red-White game has been cancelled the last 2 years so that hasn't counted.

Here we go again - comparing the IHL, UHL, and whatever, to the AHL - it's funny because there is NO comparison to the level of play in any of these leagues - with the AHL. If anyone thinks there is, THEY ARE WRONG!!!! and, it HAS to be because they must not have an AHL franchise in their area - so you HAVE to make it sound like you watch hockey at a competitive level - NOT!!

The UHL is SLOW, skating skills lacking, and, the league is much more dependent on goons - MOST of the players will NEVER be able to play consistently at any level above where they are -

What's it like in your world?

According to the chart the griffins rank 9th in the league at only 6000 people a game approx. So its bad attendance around the UHL all around?

You would qualify 6000 as bad attendance for minor league hockey?

Considering that's double the SELLOUT CAPACITY of many UHL arenas, I'd say that's a pretty solid number for minor league hockey.

The worst team for attendance in the AHL gets better than 3000 per game. Many UHL teams have to sell out to clear 3000. Of ten UHL teams, 8 are at 3774 average or lower this season. Only five of twenty-seven AHL teams fall below that mark, while Fort Wayne, a former IHL team, is one of only two UHL teams above the AHL average of 5357, the other being Quad City, averaging 5479, less than 50% capacity of their 12000 seat arena. Another former IHL team, Kalamazoo, averages just over 2000 per game, about 40% capacity, and have the second-worst attendance figures of ANY professional team in the US or Canada. The worst figures belong to their in-state rival, the Port Huron Border Cats, also of the UHL.

Another sellout last night, 8th of the season. Possible 9th sellout for the last regular season game also, least that what I heard last night. Opps almost forgot, there was no big name person at the game last night to draw that kind of crowd.....

Just because they don't sell out every game doesn't mean they have bad attendance. The Griffins average attendance is somewhere around 7,000 and the arena holds 10,834 or something like that. Pretty good..not sure where that ranks in the league, but i know some AHL arenas dont even hold 7,000. I went to the game on Sunday afternoon at 4, which i wasn't expecting to have much of a crowd and i think there was about 8,000 there.
