Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 s*** I hope Rodney doesnt fall apart on us, we really need him. We're gonna have to add somebody for the pen by the deadline, Colon can be sent down to open a spot up...he's pretty useless. Both Grilli and Ledezma are capable of long relief. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 (edited) How about this trade i just thought up... Detroit gets - 1B Sean Casey, RP Mike Gonzalez Pirates get - LF Craig Monroe, SP Humberto Sanchez Pitt gets our #1 pitching prospect who's lighting it up at Toledo, along with Monroe (who they actually wanted last offseason) to play CF for them. We get a very good lefty bat who will hit .300 + to be 1B/DH, and Gonzalez who has posted very good numbers the past few years and will add to the pen. Could possibly close as well, he's Pitts current closer, if Jones starts blowing saves again. Edited July 5, 2006 by Lou_Siffer
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 I don't know much about Sean Casey really, other than that he's supposed to be a nice guy. But, I could go with that trade. I did a little research on Casey, he looks like he might be a good fit in Detroit. He's cut down on his strikeouts the last few years. For some reason I thought he hit more homers, but either way, I wouldn't object to seeing him in the D.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 I don't know much about Sean Casey really, other than that he's supposed to be a nice guy. But, I could go with that trade. Casey's lowest BA since 2002 is .291...he's a career .300 hitter. Also strikes out very little (big plus for this team), and is capable of hitting for power. Hit 24 in 2004, however he did only have 9 last year after leaving the Reds for Pitts which tells me if he's hitting in a talented lineup he could do some power damage. Only played in 41 games this year, but he played in the Tigers series every game so im assuming he's ok. Does have a pretty hefty contract at almost 8 mill, but i believe his contract runs out at the end of this year. So it could just be a rental, which would make losing Sanchez sting if he doesnt re-sign, but this is the kind of move you have to make in order to win. Gives us another option at 1B if Shelton goes in one of those funks again too. If im right and he'll be a FA after this year, maybe it wouldnt even cost us Sanchez. Now that would be great! Grind_Lines_#1_Fan 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 Ozzie Guillen said he is not polanning to start Jose Contreras in the All Star game, and he is leaning towards Kenny. This is probably not a good thing, because it would give them an advantage over us in the pennant race. Kenny is supposed to pitch the day after the break I think, but if he pitches a few innings in the All Star game he won't be able to go, but Contreras will. Kenny is supposed to pitch the day after the break I think, but if he pitches a few innings in the All Star game he won't be able to go, but Contreras will. I had thought that, but I also figure that Guillen is trying to actually win the All-Star Game, because his team has a good shot at benefiting from it with home-field advantage in the Series. And what better way to have a good shot at winning than to have Kenny pitch to Pudge for a few innings? They know each other very well, after all. Surely two or three innings' work in the ASG won't ruin Kenny for the season, and I'll be damn proud to turn on that TV and find that a pair of Tigers are the starting batterymates in the All-Star Game. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 Im getting slightly worried about Rogers, he hasnt been losing but hasnt pitched well in like in his past 4 or 5 starts. I took a peek over at the Tigers message board yesterday, I used to post over there occasionally last year. Can you believe these idiots are wanting to trade Bonderman in a deal for Carl Crawford? And Nate Robertson in a package for Abreau? Christ, you dont bust up key parts of your rotation when you're looking like a playoff team! Complete fools i tell ya.. BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 10, 2006 Kenny Rogers is the American League starting pitcher. Way to go Kenny! If I'm not mistaken, he's the first Tiger to start the All Star game since Jack Morris in 84. Good job Kenny, and good job DD brining him here

dallas27 7 Report post Posted July 10, 2006 Would have been nice to see them get to 60 wins but I will GLADLY take 59. Three games up just sounds so much better than 2, oh well, can't win them all. Awesome first half of the season, here's to a better second! :beerbuddy:
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 10, 2006 First time the Tigers have formed the starting battery for the All-Star Game. I wonder how many other teams have done that? I'll bet the Yankees had Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra do it back in the day, and maybe the Dodgers with Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella. It's possible the Reds, too, with how many times Johnny Bench went, surely the Big Red Machine produced an ASG starting pitcher at least once. The Braves had Javy Lopez all those years, so maybe Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine and Lopez. But Kenny and Pudge - wow - even Lolich/McLain and Freehan never did it. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 10, 2006 I actually looked it up to see when the last time it happened. 1995!! Piazza from the Dodgers caught for Hideo Nomo. Doesnt happen often tho. Link Also happened, among other teams and years, in 1993, 1989, and 1986, with the Phillies, A's, and Mets, respectively. Notice the connection? Pennant winners - and in two cases, Series champs. Plus, in 1985, LaMarr Hoyt started the game for the NL, pitching to Terry Kennedy, both of San Diego. Jack Morris was the AL starter and the fans' choice for starting catcher was none other than Lance Parrish. Might have marked the first year that the starting batteries for both leagues were teammates? The defending pennant winners, no less.
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 According to the Freep the last time the Tigs had the starting pitcher and catcher was McClain and Freehan. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article.../607110399/1050 In 1985 Morris was the starter and Parrish was voted starter, but according to the Baseball Almanac, he was injured. So, I don't know if he played or not. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/yr1985as.shtml
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 Last nights HR Derby featured quite possibly the most annoying commentary i have ever listed to. "Hey isnt that your guy Kruk?" "Yeah i picked him from the start!" "HAHAHAHAHA!" "I had my boy Howard from the start!" "HAHAHAHAHA yep that Harold's guy!!" Same non-funny s*** over and over...ugh...just brutal. timothy1997 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2006 I love this Tigers team. Every night there is another hero. Carlos Guillen's HR to win it in the 9th is classic. Yanks beat White Sox so the lead is up to 3.5 on the White Sox. This matches the biggest lead of the season. I can't wait for the White Sox series next week. ESPN cant either. ESPN will be bringing their MLB coverage to the Copa for next Wed and Thurs.

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 15, 2006 I love this. It wouldve been so easy for this team to lose this series against KC, #1 coming off the allstar break and #2 looking ahead to Chicago. I was a little scared about Jones starting out in the 9th when it was 9-9, he sometimes really struggles in tie games and non save situations. Kenny, you're getting me more worried here! I feel like its been at least 6 starts since he's pitched well. He's avoiding the L though!
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 16, 2006 Kenny, you're getting me more worried here! I feel like its been at least 6 starts since he's pitched well. He's avoiding the L though! Kenny has been a notoriously mediocre second-half pitcher the past few years, and I don't buy the it's-hot-in-Texas excuse. He's old. I'm hoping he can break the pattern this year, but it's looking like more of the same. But, he doesn't need to be stellar, he just has to win. 4.5 games up on the Chisox! They got railed this afternoon in New York and the Tigers post their 12th shutout of the season. The Royals were having a great summer once May turned into June, but they didn't play the Tigers at all. Til now.
