deepinblueterritory 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2006 This is on Fox Sports http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/5739534 Another option for those clubs is Carolina Hurricanes netminder Martin Gerber, who recently told 'Canes management he intends to become an unrestricted free agent on Saturday. Carolina GM Jim Rutherford didn't rule out a possible return of Gerber, but if the rumors of Red Wings management turning their focus toward the Swiss goalie are true he could end up in Motown next season. Wings GM Ken Holland meanwhile hopes to re-sign Nicklas Lidstrom, winger Brendan Shanahan and backup goalie Chris Osgood by Friday, and should know by Saturday if captain Steve Yzerman will be back for another season. If those four all re-sign soon, it'll make sense for Holland to sign Gerber, who'll be a cheaper alternative than San Jose's Evgeny Nabokov or Anaheim's Jean-Sebatastien Giguere. Gerber also played for Wings coach Mike Babcock in Anaheim and the latter could help sway Holland's decision should he vouch for Gerber. I don't know about this. What do you guys think? He kind of crashed and burned in the playoffs.
Hatcher#2 13 Report post Posted June 29, 2006 (edited) I'll take him, Holland should use the extra money to improve the rest of the team instead of blowing it on one goalie like Nabokov. Edited June 29, 2006 by Hatcher#
ColdWarrior 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 I'm not really sold on Gerber... but he is relatively cheap. Not sure Nabby or Giggy is worth the extra cash they'd cost... Let's face it, there's no solid goaltenders available... might as well go for a cheap one then & focus more on physical skaters.
Vladinator 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 I would be fine with a Gerber/Osgood tandem...
theman19 47 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 i'm cool with it, did you see what Gerber did in the olympics? Granted he wasn't the only swiss goal who did well but sheesh
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 (edited) I have been thinking about gerber since the olympics , because he shut out Canada, but , lately , i've grown more on Biron , Roloson or Giguere. Edited June 30, 2006 by Detroit # 1 Fan
Hockey0382 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 i hope we don't get gerber.
DyingAlive 27 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 I'm not a fan at all. He collapsed in the playoffs. I cannot accept another late collapse.
Packer487 3 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 Well just so long as Gerber doesn't get sick again and drop like 12 pounds before the playoffs he'll probably do juuuust fine. He shouldn't have been playing in those playoff games. No surprise he didn't fare too well. Gerber's the guy I want. I can live with Roloson as a fill in for a year or two. Biron would be ok as well. But I want Gerber. I'd rather have Osgood be the starter than have the Wings sign Billion Dollar Belfour. -Tim
scsgoal31 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2006 Eklund has the Gerber signing at an E4, which on his 5 point rating scale, essentially means the name just needs to be signed (an e5 is a done deal, just waiting for official announcement)
