I voted Nick, but I agree with every one who brought up Red Kelly. You can't really even do this poll topic w/o including Kelly. Especially when you consider how he reinvented himself as a center in Toronto. 19 years in the league, 4 Cups w/ the Wings, 4 Cups w/ the Leafs, 1st ever Norris trophy winner. He's at least tied w/ Lidstrom. Not only is Kelly one of the best Wings defensemen ever, he is one of the best Wings players ever. The Wings should retire his #4.

The choices in this poll should be:

Nick Lidstrom

Red Kelly

Reed Larson

Black Jack Stewart

Vladimir Konstantinov

Marcel Pronovost

Steve Chiasson

Flash Hollett

I agree completely. What is it with the polls with rediculously bad options these days?

Anywho, to answer the question, my vote goes to Lidstrom.

You have to go a long way to argue it not being Nik, but I also

believe we have had one of the greatest D men the world has

ever seen, we didn't have him in his prime but Viacheslav Fetisov

has to go down as one of the all time greats. I'm surprised nobody

has mentioned him before.

Because this thread is about great Wings defensemen, not great defensemen who havebeen Wings.

Fetisov was never higher than third on the depth chart in Detroit, and that includes behind behind an aging Larry Murphy.

If you include Fetisov, you have to include Chelios, Coffey, Gadsby, Brewer, and perhaps even Jiri Fischer and Mathieu Schneider.
