I guess I expected more from these two. Abdelkader was taken with the 42nd pick in the 2005 draft, ahead of Latendresse (lets not go there). And then Matthias, taken with the 47th pick. I guess the first hope is that they’ll make the NHL, but in the back of your mind you want a little more than grind line players with 2nd rounders.

Historically, more second rounders DO NOT make the NHL than do, altough there are several notable success stories. Second rounders are usually either a gamble, or a safe journeyman pick with flaws. Emmerton, Matthias and Abdelkader have already made significant strides in their development; so at this point they can be considered successful. Based upon his clear superiority as a skater, Abdelkader has more potential for a successful NHL career than Latty.

Second rounders have a longer average career than first rounders, just FTR.

Yeah, him and Mursak look like being our best offensive prospect's. Helm looks made for the role of penalty kill specialist with some offensive upside. Mursak is just pure speed and skills, needs to bulk up a little but Emmerton could be a future franchise player.

Wings signed Emmerton today

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/weblog/index..._04.html#247207

The Wings have signed forward Cory Emmerton, their 2006 top draft pick (41st overall, second round) to a three-year entry-level contract. Emmerton skated with some of the Wings at Wednesday's optional practice at Joe Louis Arena. He's expected to sign an amateur tryout contract with Grand Rapids within the next couple of days and play in some regular season games for the Griffins. He'll also be eligible for the AHL playoffs. This does not affect his junior eligibility. He can still be sent back to Kingston next season

So it looks like he's going to play for the Griffs in the playoffs; that should be interesting.

Although this is a dead topic, I love Cory Emmerton and personally can't wait to see him in a Wings uni. When we drafted him, I did some digging and liked what I saw.

Me too. I'm dying for the Wings to develop a very good North American offensive player.

Emmerton 'still a prospect' but needs big year

By Sarah Lindenau – RedWingsCentral.com / September 21, 2010

It was a long summer for Cory Emmerton.

The 6-foot, 188-pound center struggled to improve his offensive production last season compared to his American Hockey League rookie campaign with Grand Rapids Griffins.

In the end he managed a modest 12 goals and 25 assists for 37 points compared to his 35-point output in 2008-09.

"I played really well defensively last season and I think I grew a lot that way," he said. "It is one of those things I was really focusing on, really being better defensively and being responsible, but I think a lot of the time I was taking myself out of the offensive plays and that really hurts your scoring chance."

Emmerton was one of several players who played below their potential last season for the Griffins. As a result, the club finished seventh in the Western Conference and did not qualify for the playoffs.

After the Griffins' playoff elimination, the Red Wings recalled a group of players to Detroit to serve as Black Aces, but Emmerton — who had been a Black Ace in previous years — was not one of them.

"It was disappointing, but at the same time as bad as it sounds, I didn't want to go," Emmerton said. "It's a great experience and you want to be part of that but at the same time I didn't really earn it.

"I knew I had a lot to work on and I pretty much went right home and I got down to business in the gym. I didn't really take any time off."

The former 2006 second-round draft pick focused his attention on improving his shot and working on his skate edging so he can better protect the puck.

"When the season ended I went home and I took a step back," Emmerton said. "I really thought to myself, 'What do I need to do to better myself to be the point-producer I was in junior?' One of the things I thought back to was in junior I shot the puck a lot more. I lost a little bit of confidence in my shot so I concentrated on making it harder and quicker this summer."

The St. Thomas, Ontario native admits he has a tendency to over-think the play and look for the perfect pass or shot. He knows if he puts more pucks on net this season it will result in more production.

"Points come from shooting the puck more," he said. "Last year I didn't think I had nearly enough shots and there were times when I was taking too long to shoot it as opposed to just throwing it on net. I need to just put the puck on net and maybe create chances for my linemates."

There is a lot on the line for the 22-year-old as he enters a contract year. With his waiver exemption up at season's end, he needs to work his way back onto the NHL radar.

"He needs a good year in the American League," said Red Wings general manager Ken Holland. "It's hard to set your sights on the NHL when you are an average American League player. The biggest thing is (to) be better this year than you were last year. We still like him, though, and we still think he's a prospect."

Cory Emmerton, Jan Mursak impress Mike Babcock in Red Wings' 3-2 preseason win over Chicago

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2010/09/henrik_zetterbergs_goal_assist.html

DETROIT -- Having played together so often, it doesn't take Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg long to mesh.

Their line, which includes Tomas Holmstrom, accounted for two goals Friday as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2, in an exhibition game at Joe Louis Arena.

But the line that impressed Red Wings coach Mike Babcock the most featured three young players who will return to the Grand Rapids Griffins by the end of the preseason.

Cory Emmerton was strong at both ends of the ice, generating some scoring chances, holding onto the puck and doing a good job on the penalty kill. He assisted on a goal by Jan Mursak, who, along with Jordan Owens, used his speed to apply pressure on the Blackhawks defense.

"I thought Cory Emmerton and (Mursak) were fantastic today,'' Babcock said. "Both look like they're going to play and really push our guys, which is a great thing.''

Babcock likened the young forwards to longtime grinders Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby, seeing them as future replacement parts.

"Emmerton has good skill and good vision and sees what's going on out there. And Mursak plays with a lot of speed,'' Babcock said. "They had their team in trouble tonight just with forechecking and pressure.''

Mursak opened the scoring at 2:12 of the first period by firing in the rebound of Emmerton's shot.

"I think Cory Emmerton did a good job shooting for the rebound, and I was in the right place at the right time and put it in,'' Mursak said. "I think we played pretty well together. We were skating good, creating some offense and playing decent in our defensive zone.''

Emmerton said he hasn't played with Mursak and Owens in Grand Rapids but expects they might be on the same line this season.

"Before the game, we talked. We just wanted to play simple, play structured, get pucks on net and be responsible, and I think we used our speed and shot the puck when we had a chance,'' Emmerton said.

"It would be a very good line, (with) a lot of speed, and our chemistry seems to be pretty good. We know where each other is going to go and what they're going to do and what we expect.''

22 points in 31 games in GR this season for Cory. I've watched quite a few games and he does pretty well on the PK and defensively as well.

Should be interesting what happens to him next year

The team is definitely better with him in the line-up. Great to see him score the shootout winner in his return game.

Emmerton needs to get called up for a bit instead of Tatar during these injuries. We have to start getting an idea of what he will be for the Wings.

Agreed. Seems Sauce has at least nailed down being a third line player with decent hopes of being a second liner in the near future. It's time to see what Cory has.

Im usually about giving every player a chance....especially wings draft picks.....but every eye for hockey I have says this kid has nothing....I'm used to be an upper for the wings! but I honestly have no faith in this kid! he'll be gone soon!

My guess is that he'll be put on Waivers come the end of training camp and if not claimed he'll go back to GR.
