GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 6, 2007 (edited) I'm sorry, but Rip is the last guy I want to see get traded from the Pistons. They struggle to score as a team as it is. I can't imagine what it would be like without Rip's 20 plus points per game. When the Pistons offense is clicking, it is because what Rip creates running off screens and forcing the defense to scramble. Rip is the best mid-range jump shooter in the NBA, and he also shot around 45% from the three-point line last season. The Pistons offense begins to sputter when Filp Saunders, for some reason, decides to stop utilizing Rip. I would rather see Prince get dealt any day as opposed to Rip. Prince is extremely overrated. mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted July 6, 2007 Rip's probably my favourite Piston, I would be very disappointed. He's still young and has many good years ahead of him. Can't believe they would be willing to lelt him go. Hey don't worry. It's not like serious talks are going on right now...just news passed along. if the Pistons dominate the first half of the year we will not see any major changes. GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 6, 2007 Believe me on this, or don't believe me, but just take this for what its worth... My best freind has worked for the Pistons the last half of year for a sports managment internship. Since he is just an intern he doesn't get to hear all the "secret news", but he does get bits and pieces. He said as of now the most likely Piston to be traded is Rip, and if this happend it would most likely be during the season. The reason for Rip: His contract ends soon, he is in his prime, and we could get a very good player (or two) in return. Again...take this for what it's worth, but I thought I should share it. This all may be quite true, but there is one point you made that I think is slightly off. Rip just signed a contract extension either last summer or the year before that was rather lengthy. I believe it was around 7 years for somewhere around 60 million dollars. I tend to think if one of the starters did get traded it would be Rip, even though I disagree with that very much. I'm all for trading Prince if the Pistons can get a productive big man in return, but I would be very upset if Rip ended up getting traded. Rip is much more valuable to the Pistons than Prince will ever be.

Have to totally disagree. Not that Rip isn't worth his weight in gold to the Pistons - he's extremely valuable and should not be let go - but Tayshaun, overrated? With Ben gone, Tay's the best defender, hands down, on the team. And the Pistons' offense really clicks only when Tayshaun is able to take advantage of a mismatch. Prince and Sheed are the two real catalysts to the offense because about two-thirds of the league has no way to defend them. When Prince is off, the offense is off. See the Cleveland series for proof.
Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted July 7, 2007 FINALLY! Its official! Chauncey this time IS back! Multi-year deal. Nothing else has been disclosed yet. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2928321 What a HUGE sigh of relief.

See the Cleveland series for proof. Don't get me wrong I like Tayshaun, I just think his importance to the team is nowhere near the level that Rip is at. The problem with both Prince and Rasheed is they don't know how to use those mismatches to their advantage. Prince couldn't even score on Gibson many times in the Cleveland series. Prince has one decent post move going to his left, but it never works against decent or bigger defenders. While his jump shot has improved quite a bit, it still isn't very consistent. Prince has no right hand, or ability to create off the dribble, and when he gets doubled in the post he often struggles to find the open man. The offense runs through Rip, mainly because Prince and Rasheed could be dominant, but often play away from their strengths. I would agree that Prince is the best defender on the team, but he is nowhere near the dominant defender everyone makes him out to be. LeBron absolutely abused Prince in that series. I know it's Lebron, but Bruce Bowen didn't seem to have much of a problem. I just believe if you take Rip off the Pistons, their offense would be downright awful. I've never been a big fan of Prince, although I know he is well liked by most fans and his teammates.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 (edited) Another team for Darko, this time Memphis... Actually, this could be a decent fit for Darko. Although, I think it is evident by now he will probably never amount to anything more than a role player. Memphis has some nice young pieces to work with, especially *** and Conley. If they decide to hang on to Gasol, that could turn out to be very beneficial to Darko's progress. If all else fails, Memphis plays no defense whatsoever, so Darko should at least fit in with that regard. Edited July 12, 2007 by GoWings1905
mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 So far this summer Stuckey is averaging just under 20 a game, and Afflao is averaging 16 PPG. I know it's just summer league, but hopefully these guys can contribute right off the bat!

I know it's just summer league, but hopefully these guys can contribute right off the bat! Any production the Pistons can get from the bench this season will be a great addition. The Pistons have been a seven man rotation team since the championship in 2004. McDyess and Hunter have been the bench for the past two seasons. I also read that Nazr Mohammed is likely going to be the starting center next season, barring another move by Joe D.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 The Pistons also have re-signed restricted free agent Amir Johnson. Looks like the two players the Pistons wanted back the most (Billups and Johnson) are staying with the team. I also read on the Pistons website that Hunter will likely play another season, and the decision to re-sign Webber may be based off the play of Chieck Samb in the summer league. Flip Murray is still being used as trade bait, although I'm not sure why anyone would take him at this point. Looks like the roster is all but set, except for a few tweaks. It also looks as though the Pistons will not spend their mid-level exception on a free agent, since Grant Hill has signed with Phoenix. I'd say through the draft and Billups returning, this has been a pretty good summer for the Pistons.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 The papers have been talking about Murray and Mohammed as trade bait, but I can't see anyone giving up a player or even a first round pick for them. I think we're stuck with those two. They're not horrible, but they're not totally dependable either.

And Samb has been useless so you would asssume Webber will stay on. Hunter, Webber, Murray and Mohammed= DEAD WOOD.

And Samb has been useless so you would asssume Webber will stay on. Hunter, Webber, Murray and Mohammed= DEAD WOOD. Very true everything you said. I think Hunter is probably going to play out of necessity. They have no other option at back-up point guard. Blalock is gone, Acker hopefully will never return, Flip Murray is a disaster at the point. Tay can play point-forward at times, but you can't go a whole season without a legitimate back-up to Chauncey. Brevin Knight was just released by Charlotte, and I haven't seen him sign anywhere else yet. Knight doesn't score a ton, but his ability to distribute the ball is still terrific. I would love to see Murray and Mohammed traded, but unfortunately there is probably minimal interest, and the value in return won't really address any of the Pistons major concerns. I am extremely concerned about the center position. Webber and Mohammed is a nightmare. I hope Joe D. has some more magic left this summer.
mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted July 15, 2007 Blalock is gone?? When did that happen??
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 16, 2007 Blalock is gone?? When did that happen?? I read it on Pistons.com. The editor of the website, Keith Langlois, does a mailbag each week answering questions from the fans. Here is the part regarding Blalock's departure: Charlita: While watching the NBA Summer League, I saw Will Blalock playing for the Denver Nuggets. How is this possible when he is a Piston? Langlois: He’s not a Piston any more, Charlita. He signed a two-year contract last summer with the second year at the team’s option, and the Pistons chose not to exercise the option. With veterans Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Flip Murray and Lindsey Hunter in the fold and rookies Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo on board, there simply was no more room. Will needs to develop something approaching a consistent mid-range and perimeter jumper to have an NBA future. Sounds like Blalock was just a victim of an abundance of guards. When I saw that Afflalo was wearing number eight in the summer league, I knew Blalock was history.
mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 This is great news!! From NBA.com Stuckey was everything the Pistons envisioned and more. He created significant buzz among other NBA teams and personnel gurus in Las Vegas. If you reshuffled the deck and did the draft again, my suspicion is that Stuckey would go higher than 15th – maybe much higher. Mike Conley went fourth to Memphis and left a generally favorable impression in Las Vegas, but a debate over Conley vs. Stuckey is one I’d love to hear. As impressive as Stuckey’s tangibles were – the way he handled the ball and ran a team, the way he defended, the way he got to the basket and drew fouls, the way he shot it from mid-range and beyond – his intangibles are what really solidified the impression that the kid is going to help immediately. Stuckey flat-out took over games in the fourth quarter. Summer League or not, that’s significant.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 I just HOPE we allow him to make a contribution this season. He must play, and he SHOULD be playing ahead of Hunter.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 I think the results of the summer league are pretty excellent this year. According to the Freep, when talking about Stuckey the one thing that keeps running through the minds of the Pistons brass is, "Better than we thought." Afflalo gave the Pistons something to think about too. And I'm looking forward to the day when Samb weighs about 250 lbs. I do still think Tiago Splitter would have been more beneficial to the Pistons instead of Afflalo, given the razor-thin options at center and the overflow of guards (especially with how Stuckey is playing), but IIRC he's staying another year overseas anyway. mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 I was reading about Splitter about 2 weeks before the draft, and I really thought he would be a solid player for us, but I am glad we took Affalo over him because I was sick of taking chances on tall Euros like Darko, Zebraca, and that guy from Greece (forgot his name)

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 I love the Afflalo pick. I was hoping that he would be a Piston, regardless of where he was drafted at. Afflalo is a proven, established player at the mecca of college basketball. I think people were a bit down on him from his peformance against Florida, but Corey Brewer can make a lot of good offensive players look mediocre. If Afflalo can develop a more consistent jump shot, he will be a very good asset to the Pistons. I'm thrilled the Pistons got him.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 16, 2015 -------MAJOR bump-------- Decided to bump this thread with a generic title rather than start a new one. After a long stretch of being completely irrelevant, the Pistons have suddenly turned hot, winning 8 of their last 10 and looking like a completely different team since releasing Josh Smith.
