2/24 GDT: Red Wings @ Predators

good morning! Just my 2 pesos on the game - which I watched after midnight here in Dallas on the re-broadcast in HD on my friend's big screen -- oh, my, yes!!

1. This game was not Ozzie's fault, IMO. One goal was soft, the others he didn't have much chance on. He didn't lose this game for the Wings any more than Dom lost the previous game for them. Like Dom, he was great when he was needed, but stuff happens and it's usually at least in part due to bad decisions on the parts of their team mates. As is the case with most games. Poor goalies... neither of them ever play well enough to suit us all, despite evidence to the contrary that they are both just fine! :P

2. Lang needs to go away, if he doesn't want to play. I love the guy, but he is not an asset at the moment. Play hard or sit down, Robert.

3. Forberg is in Nashville. Good. He spent half the game whining about his skate (was anyone surprised?) and the rest whining to a ref. At least every time I looked for him, he was whining or not on the bench. He didn't look good, until Kariya fed him a puck in front of Ozzie that even Lang would have had the energy to tip in.

Related comment: Tkatchuk is not a Wing. Also good. Guerin, anyone? I haven't checked the main sites for what else happened in trades this weekend...

OK, off for more coffee. Have a great day, all! ;)

12 hours later and I am still depressed about this OT loss. I hope this one was a lesson to the Wings and that they can come out on top in similar games in the future. It felt like playoff hockey to me with the intesity and while there were some problems there were some positives too. I won't blame Ozzie 100% because he was left out to drt here and there with a failure to clear the zone many times, but you have to come up with the big saves - last goal in regulation and the OT goal too.

Now what is up with Babcock and dealing with our second line. How about a few new pairings, shifting things around? Gees, is he just praying it will work out by magic? Lang needs someone other than Williams and a kick in the ass as well.

Detroit needs more than one line that can score. Also, I kinda like watching Kronner and Danny destroy people, but from where I'm sitting they're giving away chances on Detroit's net while they're still looking for a body to bang. Yes, knock some people down, but be responsible about it.

Oh yeah, Detroit really needs more than one line that can score. J Willy actually was showing some energy last night, man I like Franzen (he had a goal, end of discussion), and I'm not sure if Lang is lazy or not, but he DOES suck. Maltby had as much chance to score as Lang did last night, and Malts has hands of stone.

I almost think Babcock should break that line up, just to try to fire the second line up. I never thought Mikael was all that big of a deal, but they miss him lately.

In closing, Detroit needs more than one line that can score pretty bad.

Don't know if it's been mentioned (and I'm not going to read 34 pages to find out!), but I don't really feel that bad about the loss last night. With a couple of injuries, a backup goalie and without making our "big" trade yet, we still hung in there and got a point. Granted, I didn't see Hordichuk all night (probably saved for tonight's game against Shelley), or Hartnell who is out with a broken foot, and those two guys would've at least been banging us more but still...

I was very happy about the game last night. I thought it was going to be another blowout like the Philly game. A back to back, on the road, with a backup in net. I'm thrilled that they came away with a point.

I, however, am not thrilled with the second line combining for twelve points in the last seventeen games.

Oh man, I think I just woke up my roommates laughing at that one. Well done!

None. If anything, Fischer should beat the hell out of him--Fisch was a hard worker with a faulty cardio/nervous system, and meanwhile Lang is totally healthy but is lazy as hell? Daaah!

I think we've all long since faced this. What's your point?

Agreed.

LMAO THATS GREAT

That was probably one of the top 2-3 regular season Preds v Wings games that i've seen.

Crowd was magnificent. Lots of back and forth between the the two sides.

Refs were terrible on both sides. So many times that I was wondering how there was no penalty called on the wings, and then equally as many times that I was wondering how the Preds got away with something not being called.

Physical game, close game, hard fought, last second heroics. Awesome!!!

...as a side note, I've only seen 2 other people mention it in this thread. The goal that was waived off. Okay, there was a delayed penalty, the puck is touched by Vokoun and then goes in, so they waive it off saying that when the puck was touched that it was dead and then the penalty was assessed. And then the Wings scored on the power play. But if they had counted the first goal, then the wings don't get that power play... so it's basically an even call. You still got the goal, just not when you thought it would be. Not an excuse.

I still want just one game where both teams are healthy and putting their best on the ice. Wings played Osgood instead of hasek, and Cleary was out... but on the other side, we were missing Sullivan and Hartnell our two leading goal scorers.

Naw, watching the Wings elminate the Preds after Vokoun opened his big mouth in 2003/04 was a much better game IMO.

On a side note, it was mentioned that the waived off goal play was discussed at the owner's meetings, and they concurred that it should have been a goal. But, they have not gotten the word to the all the refs, so the refs were not aware of the rule.

Nice win, but I'm still not impressed.

I wouldn't mind a player like Bertuzzi coming here. Ok you can let the flaming against me begin 'runs for cover'.

Seriously though, we need toughness. I love how Kronwall plays, hopefully he'll stay injury-free. If Lang would start burying those short side shots he likes to do then he'd be worth keeping...but where has the rest of the team gone? Save the 1st line. Thank God for that line or we'd be in big trouble.

I'm not even sure I want to see the wings get first place. Where has that gotten many teams anyway? I'd rather they have to fight for it, my thing is they just don't have the type of team that can handle scrappy, hungry, young fast teams. They play good puck possession, but you can beat that with the trap and speed.

I don't know, i just want to see them succeed. I hope that they make a good trade. Tkachuk is cursed.

I felt the Wings were largely outplayed in the game. The shots didn't tell the tale of the game, Nashville seemed to have the better of the chances and definitely controlled the puck well in the Wings zone. The game showed me that the Wings need a guy who can hit and another scorer, this one line team is in trouble come playoff time if Hank and Dats get shut down. Beat Chicago on Tuesday.

thats why I said regular season. That playoff series had a few pretty good games in it.

Like I said, if they had counted the goal, then there wouldn't have been the power play that Holmstrom scored on. So it doesn't matter either way.

If you're still not impressed with the Predators this season... I don't know.

Anybody notice who the defenceman was that was standing in front of the Wings goal during the GWG last night? Whoever that kid is, he did a great job spectating...

That was Lebda. But the pass Kariya made was pretty good, and Forsberg snuck in on Lebda's blind side. I wouldn't shoot him yet. :)

I must be transforming into an average LGW poster, because I am trying to resist the urge to bash Kronwall.

It wasn't an on-ice pass if I recall: for that matter, I don't think it was even intended as one. It floated past or between Kronwall's legs, hit Fors' stick, and went in. That's what strikes me twenty+ hours later, at least.

Also... I heartily urge you away from bashing Kronwall. He will blueline your ass in an instant.

I didn't say it would've changed the outcome of the game. I was simply refuting you saying that Vokoun made a save and that's why the goal was called off. The ref made the wrong call, because he was unaware of the rule change.

The Redwings won back-to-back President's trophy and didn't make it past the first round. I am unimpressed by those seasons as well. I guess it takes a lot to impress me. The Preds are one of the top 10 teams in the league, nothing more, nothing less.

Bad play by Kronwall on the OT GWG. He should've been facing the action while guarding Forsberg and would've been able to block the pass properly, but Datsyuk's coverage was much worse than Kronwall's. He overplayed Kariya by a mile.

Kronwall. I give him a break because he is steadily improving. Realistically, he hasn't had much time in which to play, but he has massive potential.

When Lebda and Kronwall realize their respective full potentials, we'll be sitting pretty. They're both outrageously fast, Lebda especially. That guy is underrated.

I agree, Lebda skates very well and can move the puck nicely too
