Thought i'd do some statistical crunching just for fun.

10 year history from 1996-2006

Of the past 10 cup winners only 4 were seeded 1st in their conference heading into the playoffs.

Lowest seed to win the Cup: 4th (Devils in 2000)

Most common seed to win the Cup: Tie (4 #1's and 4 #2's)

Number of times each seed has made it to the Finals

1 5 times

2 6 times

3 2 times

4 3 times

5 0

6 1 time

7 1 time

8 2 times

Not that this really tells us anything I just thought it showed that basically any team can make it to the finals. It should be noted though the the higher ranked team in the finals won 7 out of 10. 1 year both the Aves and Devs were ranked #1. The #3 Wings beat the #2 Flyers and the #4 Devils beat the #2 Stars.

Based on this incredible evidence  I have uncovered it seems probable to me that the Wings will finish 4th this year in the West. And since the Wings have won the Stanley cup with the 1st seed in 2002, the 2nd seed in 1998 and the 3rd seed in 1997 that by finishing 4th it is guaranteed that we will hoist the Cup this year. Grit does not matter. Toughness does not matter. Big, scoring wingers do not matter.

THIS IS FATE BABY!! C'mon #4 seed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much time can one possibly waste in a workday? Is it possible to go the entire day without accomplishing anything?

:D

Hey, FYI, the Wings were a 3rd seed in 1998 too. Dallas was #1 and Colorado was #2. We were #2 overall in the West with points, but Dallas and Colorado won the Divisions, making us #3.

DAMMIT BARRY!, now you've just gone and jinxed the entire thing. There's nothing wrong with believing in something even if your facts are all screwed up. Everyone, please disregard what Barrie said, he did not know the ramifications of bringing to light the fact that I f-ed up my seedings.

Repeat after me: Wings were a #2 seed in 1998. Wings will be 4th seed this year. Wings will win Cup w/4th seed this year. You cannot stop destiny. Barrie's facts are now stricken from the record most noblest Hockey Gods. :D

Now of course by some travesty of fate we don't win the Cup from the 4th seed I can always go back and say that I made a mistake so its no wonder my prediction was off. HA! best of both worlds. Ignorance is bliss.
