Official: Ryan Smyth dealt to Islanders

Well all I can say is everyone in Edmonton is PISSED off at the moment. Than again I'm calling it right now that Ryan Smyth WILL RESIGN in EDM this summer. Someone from Edmonton might be dealt just to fit him under the salary cap but I really believe he'll come back. If Snow doesn't resign him, he got the short end of the stick for this one.

All of Edmonton must feel like they got kicked in the stomach. So much for the salary cap helping them. I love how teams like Edmonton and LA said that once the cap was in place that they would be able to compete. All I'm seeing is stars leaving those places.

As for Smyth this summer, I hope the Wings make a big push for him. He'd be a great fit.

Ken Daniels just mentioned the Oilers had a deal with the Isles in place well in advance. No other team was contacted. When the Oilers couldn't come to an agreement with Smyth, they went through with the deal.

Heard that too. How smart does Islander mangagement look right now?

Wow,this one pretty much overshadows Guerin/Bertuzzi-deals.

Don't know if he's a true franchise player but he definitely is closest to being one, considering latest movers. He's an Oilers icon at the very least.

21st century version of the Gretzky to LA-trade?

Dunno about that, but still a great trade by Snow (IF Smyth re-signs).

Well, some ironic comparables, given that it was Mark Messier Night....

Both Messier and Smyth played 12 years in Edmonton, both got dealt to a New York team.

Of course, the similarities end when the five Cups thing comes up. :P

Whoever doubts Garth Snow now should be shot. Look at the deal he made here. He only gives up one draft pick and two prospects for one of the best players in the league. Kudos Garth Snow.

Watch out for the Islanders now. If they can now get a healthy and decent playing Yashin, they will be extremely deadly.

Only one draft pick and two prospects? I'm not sure the Islanders fans feel that way. O'Marra was considered a future cornerstone, much like Howard or Kindl in Detroit.

I used to feel sorry for Edmonton when there was no cap and they had to compete with larger markets and american dollars sign/re-sign their key players.

But the cap made it harder on teams like Detroit and easier on teams like Edmonton to manage a team.

Edit: The only way Lowe gets away with not looking ridiculous is if Smyth somehow comes back to Edmonton in July.

I don't know very much about Ryan O'Marra, so I can't say what their thoughts were on trading him. They probably are upset, and he was a top 20 pick. His numbers do look pretty good this year from what I've seen, so yeah, he is a loss.

Nilsson, on the other hand, has somehow soured on Ted Nolan. He has not gotten a chance to play at all this seaon. When Yashin went down earlier this season, you figure that Nilsson would get called up. Instead they call up Eric Boguniecki. So you could see something was going on there. As the way it looked, I don't know if the Islanders are too upset about losing him just based on this season.

No, the centerpiece going from Islanders is clearly O'Marra.

Flames' turn is next

By ERIC FRANCIS -- Sun Media

With Kevin Lowe tearing the heart out of the Oilers yesterday, the Calgary Flames unofficially clinched a playoff spot: Without Ryan Smyth, Edmonton is out of the hunt.

But before Flames fans take to the Red Mile in celebration of their third-straight year in the playoff party, perhaps Calgarians should take a minute to pause for those less fortunate souls in Edmonton.

After all, next year at this time the Flames will almost undoubtedly find themselves in a similar predicament with captain Jarome Iginla.

Or franchise netminder Miikka Kiprusoff.

Both will become unrestricted free agents July 1, 2008, and will command the league's top dollar in their respective positions.

The Flames won't be able to afford both.

Especially considering Alex Tanguay will make $5 million the following year and Robyn Regehr, Daymond Langkow and Craig Conroy also will be UFAs. Dion Phaneuf will be a restricted free agent too.

While high turnover-rates are the new reality of today's NHL, the devastation Edmonton feels today with Smyth's shocking trade is nothing compared to the loss Calgary will feel if Iginla is shipped out of his home province.

"I'm sure it was a very tough decision, but that's strictly business," said Flames GM Darryl Sutter, who was asked how many GMs could make a tough move like that, knowing how unpopular it would be.

"Kevin just did, and I could. That's two. Quite honestly, you can't let emotions be part of it - you have to make a business decision."

Don't be fooled into believing Sutter is bluffing - the numbers simply don't add up since both Iginla and Kiprusoff will command roughly $8 million annually. So, one will stay. One will go.

Lowe's only cushion is the fact the Oilers weren't a legitimate playoff team anyway. Sutter won't have that "luxury."

Have pity, Flames fans - next year, the pain could be yours.
