I will be making my first trip to Det. Friday. It is also my first NHL game. What is there to do before the game around the arena? What should i expect for my first game? Thanks to those who reply. Go Wings

I would recommend just going down to the greektown area, there are tons of good places to eat. Then you can hop on the people mover for 50 cents right to the Joe.

My friends and I usually hit the Anchor Bar on Fort St after the game for some beverages. It's a couple blocks from The Joe.

Slows BBQ over by Tiger Stadium is damn good too, for being BBQ north of the mason-dixon line. It can get crowded though.

Otherwise, hit Greektown and if you like to gamble, the casnios.

I highly reccomend Greek town also.

I usually go to the Old Shillelagh

Decent food and pitchers of Guinness.

They will shuttle you for free. Thier bus driver will take you on a wild ride too. Usually the people who have to stand on the bus will be falling all over during every turn. I should mention they ley you take your booze on the bus also.

50 cents for a shuttle is nice too.

The Shillelagh's bus drivers are off-duty cops, which is why they drive like maniacs. You can park in the lot a block north from Fishbone's for $6, take the shuttle to the Joe and back at the Shillelagh and be on the road before most people have moved 20 feet in the parking garage.

[KOMETS!!! Are you from the Fort. I grew up there and still love going back to the Coliseum. That's a great venue for minor league hockey. Now I live in Toledo and their stadium is, to put it kindly, not quite as nice.

A good thing to do before the games in Detroit is to drive around the neighborhoods and ask groups of teenagers if they can make change for a $100 bill.

Yep I'm from the fort. The Coliseum is a great place to watch the K's with 7500 people per game. I'll make sure to bring plenty of $100 bills.

If you do decide to take the people mover after the game be aware you'll probably be waiting awhile. The ONLY time I did this (not my choice) I waited for a train I could actually squeeze myslef on for upwards of an half hour.

BTW, whatever you do make sure you get to experience the restrooms at the Joe.

(hint.. wait in the line where the tubs meet at a 90 deg angle.)

You should probably check out Hockeytown Cafe and/or Chellis Chilli. Both are near each other and near Tiger Stadium.

You could park at Greektown Casino, get you parking validated, and travel around via the People Mover.

Have fun.

What was it, Free Pizza And Beer Night on the People Mover? :P I don't think I've ever seen overcrowding on that train. Sometimes it's reasonably full but more often than not you'll get on and a tumbleweed will roll out.

If you're going to eat before a game, get there by 5pm. Any later and it's a wait. Have fun, and people are right greektown is nice, between the bar buses and the people mover you can't go wrong.
