Stanley Cups

Everyone on here probably knows we have won 3 stanley cups in the past 10 years. My question to you guys is what red wings team/season left you with a bitter taste in your mouth. Although i realize any season the wings finish without winning the cup leaves a sour taste, but what seasons especially should we have won but didnt.

Only two come to my mind

1998-99 - Coming off back to back Stanley Cup championships. We acquired Chris Chelios, Wendel Clark, Ulf Samuelson, and Bill Ranford at the deadline. I really thought that would give us enough of a boost put us over the hump.

2002-03 - Only difference from the year before was no Hasek. I know that is a big loss, but we gained Curtis Joseph, Mathieu Schneider, and Henrik Zetterberg.

the year we got swept by the kings in round 1... that sucked bigtime

also last year, seeing stevie walk off the ice for the last time with no cup in his hands... sad sad day

2000-01 was the hardest for me to swallow. Stevie and Shanny were both injured, and we blew a 2-0 series lead and couple late leads in LA.

The last 3 years, were tough, but not as bad as 2000-01 I found. Winning 3 Cups has satisfied me to a certain extent as a fan. The last 3 playoffs have shown me how tough it is to win the Cup, which has given me a shot of pride knowing I've seen my team win 3 times. I still want to see more Cups though.....

Before we won our 3 cups, 1993-94 was really tough as well. Atleast in 1992-93 we lost to Toronto, but 1993-94 was to San Jose!! Brutal!

what red wings team/season left you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

In this order:

1. Cup loss to the Devils in '95

2. 1st Round exit to Oilers in '06 (wanted one more Cup for Stevie)

3. 1st Round exit to Sharks in '94

4. Conference finals loss to the Av's in '96

5. The entire Bryan Murray Era (Great regular seasons only to fail in the playoffs)

6. 1st Round exit to the Kings in '01

The Eighties were a lot of fun because the Wings were scrappy and they didn't have all those lofty expectations... Now it's Stanley Cup or Bust.

i agree, it did suck seeing stevie retire without a cup, but i really didnt think the 05-06 team had what it takes to win anyways. the reason 98-99, 02-03 really stung for me was because i thought those two squads were hands down the best teams in the NHL. ANd i thought they were heavy favorites in their respective years.

99-00, and 00-01 i didnt like our chances because of the goaltending, and the last 2 seasons i thought we were too soft.

98-99 Is a great one to point out! I remember being at work when all the deadline deals were announced. We were going nuts, thinking how in the HELL is Holland pulling this off. Then the playoffs , Ozzie gets hurt and Ranford helps the Wings DOMINATE the Avalanche the 1st two games IN Colorado. We talked endlessly of how great is was going to be to sweep those guys. Then the Wings come back to the Joe, and the collapse was UNREAL! I was just stunned after they lost in six. How could that happen after going 2-0 IN COLORADO? To this day that one baffles me!

May 10, 1988. One of the darkest days in Red Wings history. The Red Wings win the Norris Divsion and roll through the first two rounds of the playoffs to meet Edmonton in the Conference Finals. The Red Wings are down 3-1 in the series when Bob Probert, Petr Klima, and some other players break curfew and hit an Edmonton strip club/bar the night before game 5. The Red Wings get crushed 8-4 the next day. Shortly thereafter Illich cleans house and gets rid of the troublemakers but it busts up a pretty solid unit. The Red Wings won't make it back to the Conference Finals for seven years.

The Wings didn't get swept, they lost four in a row after being up 2-0.

But that's pretty much the worst playoff exit I've ever seen. I couldn't sleep after the Deadmarsh goal that finished the deal. The worst part about playoff exits is that they happen at night so you have to go to sleep right afterwards, and that one seriously kept me up half the night.

Ahhh the infamous Goose Loonies incident.

That definitely was a disappointment on every level.

The first round exit to San Jose in 1993-1994, or the incident in 1988. I was only about 5 years old when the incident in '88 happened, but I remember how mad my dad was when it happened. He was fuming for about 2 weeks. Same thing with the San Jose series in '94. I remember watching those though, and that was just an empty feeling watching that on TV. That game they lost was the one Ozzie cried in after it was over. It was a very bad time.

without a doubt the worst season was last season. seeing yzerman go through so much, and the team play so hard for him in the regualr season on to see that noone but Yzerman and Zetterberg show up in playoffs? Not to metnion i hated the whole Oiler team before playoffs. The sadest thing was seeing stevie go out with a bang. Yeah he had a great playoff, but he deserved a cup for his final year. I will never forget seeing him step off the ice for the last time, and without a cup made it even worse

I hated New Jersey for almost a decade after they swept us in the SC finals, so that along with being beaten in the CF by Claude n' the gang might be the two biggest. But honestly the 1st round sweeping at the hand of Giguere (yes I'm only naming Giguere and not the whole team) not only left me angry and dissapointed but in complete disbelief. Took me a long time to get over that one, I was basically in Post Traumatic shock for the entire summer. Not really, but it's also the most recent of the three, probably sticks out a bit better becausse of that.

I remember that one most too, though it isn't the worst one in my mind. It put me at being about twelve, and Ozzie's misplay on the puck and the subsequent goal... it was heartrending. And I remembered the fact that he cried over it too.

The next memorable playoff out to me was '92-'93... not for any exact qualifying reason... but simply because despite losing to them, it was the last time we'd ever see the Wings face the Maple Leafs in the post-season. =p Man, change the conferences and get this stuff back together NHL, pronto.

Losing to LA in 2001. I was at Game 5, I've never seen less-inspired hockey in all my life. And I've seen a lot of hockey. I helped boo the Wings off the ice after that friggin' debacle. Was not surprised when they lost Game 6 in OT in LA.

Prior to that, the Goose Loonies/Edmonton incident in 1988 was extremely disappointing. I was 13 and had high hopes that the Wings could upset mighty Edmonton.

Losing in '96 to the Avalanche hurt a lot.

Although, for me personally, it was the hardest to swallow last year. After such a great season, it seemed fitting that Yzerman would walk away from a brilliant career with one more Cup. To be knocked out in the first round probably made it harder.

I also had a difficult time swallowing the loss to Calgary in '04. Especially after seeing Stevie go down, I was hoping the guys would be able to rally around that to win.

i would have to say that ozzie giving the puck to jamie baker in 94 has to be the worst ever !!

Edmonton didn't upset me because I had seen it coming from the deadline after they aquired Roloson. The Ducks would have to be the most upsetting, the fact that most of their team played horrible with the exception of their goalie was terrible.
