Markov, Franzen succumb to 'upper body' injuries

Johan Franzen and Danny Markov are dealing with the vague above-the-belt tweaks and sprains known, when the playoffs approach, anyway, as "upper body" injuries:

March 10, Detroit Free Press: Franzen played until late in the second period of the 3-2 victory over Los Angeles, but then re-aggravated the injury that had kept him out of practice Thursday.

Markov is day-to-day. “We don’t have a lot of bodies; that’s the big thing,†Babcock said. “You’re trying to make combinations and lines, and get enough people on the ice….â€Â

Asked about Franzen, Babcock said, “We thought he was fine, but obviously he wans’t fine. We’re hoping it wasn’t a setback.â€Â

Markov “has upper body soreness,†Babcock said. “He just couldn’t keep fighting through it any more. He had been battling through for quite a while and we just said finally enough’s enough.â€Â

Wow these injuries are really starting to pile up for us.

Markov is one of the more injury prone players in the league. We knew this before we signed him so it’s no surprise that he’s injured again. Of more concern is Franzen as we really need his big body for the playoffs. Sounds as though it could be reasonably serious judging by Babcock’s comment.

With all of the injuries, it still awesome to see whoever we bring up from GR just fits right in. I have been so impressed with Ellis, Hussey, Bootland, Langfeld. This just shows that the Wings are one of the best teams in the league. The Franzen injury is a big loss, but I think he'll be back before the end of the month (with everyone else).
