To retire or not to retire... ?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I saw this piece on Spector's blog about possible retirements after the 2006-2007 season.

I've added a couple of names to it.

Who should definitely retire who could play a year (maybe two) more ?

Alexei Zhamnov - it's over Alexei.. stop.

Brian Leetch - although they have the same age, he ages much faster than Schneider... so stop

Bryan Berard - unable to play because of chronic back injury

Chris Simon - who wants him after his suspension ? 20 % chance of return

Darius Kasperaitis - too slow for the modern NHL

Donald Brashear - close to extinction...

Ed Belfour - still a 0.905.. that's not bad.

Eric Lindros - should have stopped in 1999...

Gary Roberts - 33 points in 56 games isn't that bad for a 41 year old..

Glen Wesley - still a workhorse

Jason Allison - can't see anyone giving him another shot...

Jeremy Roenick - Brett Hull did the smart thing... Roenick didn't.

Jim Dowd - one point every ten games.. Goodbye Jim !

John LeClair - everyone knows but John..

Peter Bondra - Maybe, just maybe the Hawks will sign him for another year.

Peter Forsberg - What happens in the playoffs ?

Petr Nedved - $2,356,000.00 - 12 points so far.

Pierre Turgeon - Future Hall of Famer will probably know when to quit.

Sandis Ozolinsh - If he gets it together, he can still be of great value.

Scott Mellanby - He won't win the Art Ross, but he contributes nonetheless.

Sean Burke - LA should give him another year. Better than Garon / Cloutier / Labarbera

Sergei Gonchar - Retirement ? Are you kidding me ?

Teppo Numminen - Will sign a 2 year deal in the summer... watch me !

Tony Amonte - Can't score forever Tony.. better quit and open a Pizza Hut..

Trevor Linden - A great player deserves a great farewell. I hope he knows when to call it quits.

Edit: the comments are mine, I just 'stole' some names from Spector's Blog.

I know you are saying he shouldn't retire, but why is he even on the list? He's only 32 years old. Fedorov is 5 years older than him.

It’s sad seeing great players tarnish their reputations by playing for a few too many seasons. Lindros for example has a mere 5 goals this season, five!

And then what’s even sadder is seeing Roenick, whom I like, speak out about his disappointment that a playoff bound team didn’t pick him up. Why would anyone want him?

Some players don’t know when to call it a day.

Alexei Zhamnov has already retired. He did so last summer.

Side note on some of the other names: I always keep hoping Pierre Turgeon can get back with it. He was one of my favorite players in his earlier days with Buffalo and the NY Islanders. I think his time has passed though.

Teppo Numminen could very well go as long as Chelios is right now. He still is a great defenseman, and has point up some solid points this year too.

Glen Wesley is still a workhorse defenseman. I don't see him retiring any time soon.

Jim Dowd has hardly ever been an offensive forward. He still is good defensivly, and on an ass boring team like the New Jersey Devils, will be welcome.

Forsberg won't retire. As not will Nedved. Mellanby and Roberts still have some good years left in them too.

As for the others on that list: I do see retirement as just around the corner.

Alexei Zhamnov - yes, already has

Brian Leetch - yes, hasn't played in a year, he's done

Bryan Berard - maybe

Chris Simon - has 25 points and 10 goals this year...will be back with NYI or someone else.

Darius Kasperaitis - maybe

Donald Brashear - someone will want him just for the belts he carries with him

Ed Belfour - should play a year or two more (one)...he's looked great this year

Eric Lindros - probably b/c of injuries

Gary Roberts - should play one more year with TOR

Glen Wesley - no, is still quality defender

Jason Allison - someone should sign him but as you say probably not and will retire

Jeremy Roenick - yes

Jim Dowd - no

John LeClair - I believe John still has it, but I guess I'm the only one

Peter Bondra - no, Hawks won't resign but someone probably will for cheap

Peter Forsberg - no, he'll be back to collect a paycheck

Petr Nedved - he'll sign for less somewhere and contribute...what he will contribute (?)

Pierre Turgeon - yes, gone

Sandis Ozolinsh - I say he goes back to Russia/Latvia

Scott Mellanby - nope, one more for the RatMan

Sean Burke - Burke will be gone and Hanna Labarbera will be #1 as planned. Probably sign as a backup somewhere a la Belfour. His best this season was obviously the only time Wings fans watched him.

Sergei Gonchar - Nope, back to Pittsburgh is my guess.

Teppo Numminen - Repo-Man still has tons left. Well, maybe one season or so...

Tony Amonte - I think he'll play another year as a checker a la his buddy Roenick.

Trevor Linden - He'll be back in Van for less.

Chris Chelios - Cheli is an all-time great...but he can't shoot to save his life and at times looks like a pilon out there. Gordie Howe hung around but Chelios does less with less than he. Time to hang 'em up Chel.

Dominik Hasek - Dom has been good this year, but he should and I think he will pack it in after this season's kick at the playoff can. Injuries are just too much of a concern with The Czech Shutter; as much as I hate to see him go, it's probably time.

If the Predators win the SC, I see him retiring

Forsberg has already spoken of retiring at the end of the season. We're all used to hockey players being supermen when it comes to pain--from our years with Stevie--but one can only take so much. Forsberg has been given, along with incredible talent, shoddy joints.

Also, say what you will about star players needing more grit, but all the hitting Forsberg has done--while it has indeed been valuable to his teams--has taken its toll.
