Nashville ... Catfish?

Wow! Some of you are so full of yourselves. What arrogance.

I think I remember reading that a Preds exec actually said they want to be exactly like the Wings. Who could blame them? I'll try to find it...hell I don't care. The dude just meant he wanted to go from an expansion team to a contender year in, year out. Which is what they should be shooting for.

I want the Preds and CBJ, etc. to become legit. I've been around long enough to remember how good we had it in the Norris division days, when our division foes had some history and real hockey crazy fan bases. Trading the MN franchise (at the time the North Stars) and Toronto for Nashville and Columbus just blows in my humble opinion.

Oh and the Octopi thing is more tolerable because it's 50 yrs old and we don't throw 5 of them on a Tuesday night regular season loss.

It is fitting, their organization's goal is to become exactly like Detroit.

Wow! Some of you are so full of yourselves. What arrogance.

I have heard pred fans say that the Pred team trys to build off of what Detroit has.

I went to the season opener for the Saginaw Spirit this year and someone threw a carp out on the ice. Don't ask me what that represents.

It's a walleye not a carp. The Saginaw River is known as a prime walleye fishing spot in the state. We have the Walleye Fest and fishing competition every year. That tradition started in game 1 of the teams history in Saginaw if I'm not mistaken so it's nothing new. I hope I shed some light on your observation.

All fans of any team can be arrogant (yes even Wings fans, and i love the Red Wings).

And they have a certain person hired by JLA to throw octopus onto the ice. And if they don't end up throwing it they immediately throw it into the Detroit River for fish or whatever to eat so it doesn't go to waste. On detroitredwings.com under legend of the octopus they explain this and i think they said something about it on an episode of Red Wings' Weekly.

Last night at the game, the announcers on FSN Detroit said that throwing catfish is a symbol of good luck. I dont like the Preds anymore than any other Wings fan but just let them start their own traditions. The more other fans complain about it the more they will throw them. So just let it go.

And I find it so funny how Blues fans still make jokes about that. Oh the irony.

 What they don't know can't hurt them.

Actually, I guess when we're talking about the murder capital, it really can hurt them! :P

I don't believe Detroit has been the murder capital for a while now. I was trying to point out an untrue stereotype.

Sorry, I misread your post.

I think the catfish were thrown on Tuesday just to get the crowd/maybe even the team pumped up. I've been to a Preds/Wings game in Nashville before where a Wings fan threw an octopus on the ice right before the Wings were about to lose. I guess if you bring slimy seafood in your pants, you've got to get rid of it win or lose. :)

ProudestMonkey already hit on it, but i'd like to clarify a little bit.

There have been a few city-wide art projects in Nashville. Artists have the chance to decorate statues that are placed all around the downtown area. One year it was statues of Catfish. There was one out front of the GEC that was painted in Preds colors. It wasn't until that project that the catfish throwing started.

It doesn't represent bottom feeding, we were really only bad for 4 seasons. The fifth season we were battling for the playoffs until Legwand was injured for the final 15 games (and coincidentally, we didn't win a single game that he was injured... and preds fans STILL debate how good he is). And then in seasons 6 and 7 we made the playoffs, and now we're in season 8.

It's not like some huge thing either, I think there's a small pocket of Preds fans who are really big on the catfish throwing, but most of us didn't know if it would actually become a tradition or what would happen. When they replaced the catfish statues with Guitar statues, many of us even jokingly wondered if we would throw guitars on the ice during that season.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. I think it should be saved for big goals in big games. But I think that will work itself out eventually.

As for this thread, most of you should be ashamed of yourselves for dragging the "classy wings fan" image through the mud. There are exceptions who are actually mature enough to discuss opponents, opposing fans and the city that they live in, and you know who you are. But the rest of you need to grow up and do a little bit of researching and thinking before you go blabbing like an idiot again.

You know, when you put it that way, I can understand the 4 or 5 people tossing the catfish on the ice.

"Phew, this thing is really getting ripe...I don't give a damn if we're losing, I'm tossing this mother..." :D

Dude, I would pay to see that just once.

Okay, I hate the Preds...but it's because Gary Bettman made me. Okay, not really. In all honesty, it's not such a bad thing. Like cincywingfan was saying, I'd like to see the Central become respectable. Until St. Louis bottomed out, it was always Detroit and them fighting for the division...and Chicago, Nashville and Columbus were 20+ points behind. Now, St. Louis and Nashville have switched spots. What I'd love to see is the Central get really competitive like the Northwest is. Nashville becoming competitive in the past few seasons is a big part of that, so while yeah, it's a "manufactured rivalry" and all that, it's become a rivalry nonetheless. It's good for the division and it's good for the game.

But I still hate those inbred rednecks! :P

(and yes, that last sentence was sarcasm!)

St. Louis improved a lot this year. Chicago and Columbus are a mystery, because every offseason we look at them and say "wow, they're going to be a lot better next season" and then they bomb.

Chicago, especially. When they got Khabibulin, I don't think anyone thought he'd be the free agent signing bust that he was.
