May just be his opinion, but he seems pretty confident. I'm for it if the Wings go east. But 16 teams in each conference does open up the playoffs to NCAA style.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...mp;lid=tab4pos2

the league has't learn its lesson, get rid of some teams in florida, atlanta.then maybe move a team vegas.

Just realized that although Ohio is more east than MI, Detroit is more east than Columbus. Therefore, it would be RIDICULOUS to move Columbus before the Wings.

Yeah, but Buttman said that as long as an owner in Atlanta or Florida wants a team and there's an ownder there the team stays.

Someone else finally agrees that you shouldn't be rewarded for losing!!!

Also, I don't think the league can really look at expanding just yet. Bettman already added a bunch of teams, many of which are struggling to draw fans and make a profit (including Nashville, who is making a legit run).

I personally think the idea of expansion has some merit. They would open up a huge market base in Vegas for one. The Seattle idea isn't so bad. They had a team there once before. I'd love to see a true eastern and western conference instead of the band-aid that they have now. Besides, I already have the name pegged for the Vegas team, the Las Vegas Aces.

Columbus is more east of Detroit.

One has to drive, walk or fly southeast to reach Columbus from Detroit.

More proof ...

Columbus - Coordinates: 39°59N, 82°59W - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus%2C_Ohio

Detroit - Coordinates: 42°19N, 83°2W - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit

I was going to mention it but I figured that you'd rehash that fact anyway.

Columbus

Latitude: 39 57 40N

Longitude: 082 59 56W

detroit

Latitude: 42 19 53N

Longitude: 083 02 45W

So Columbus is 2' 49'' to the East from Detroit. That's roughly 200 miles. Sothe westernmost suburb of Columbus is still to the East from the easternmost point in Detroit. Nice try. Come back when you have a better argument for moving East.

BTW, Atlanta is farther West than either Detroit or Columbus.

EDIT- Oops, got beat to the punch. Must learn to type faster :)

LOL

Yeah, I'm a stickler aboot that.

Hradek made some good points. I like the idea of two more teams in west.

I don't like the idea of messing with the point system though.

I agree with the person who said make OT 5 on 5. I've said that here before.

NO MORE TEAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET SOME OF THIS MEDIOCRE TALENT OUT OF THE LEAGUE BY CONTRACTING TEAMS. NOT BY ADDING MORE WATERED DOWN CRAP TALENT!!!

True. I see your point. I don't think that it would be a bad move for the league to move a team or two though. Vegas seems like it might be a great place to start.

What you are trying to say is that Columbus is 200 miles further east than Detroit? It's about 200 miles from Detroit a little past Cleveland towards the OH/PA stateline.

Hate to tell you, but Detroit is West of Columbus by Longitude.

Detroit is 83 degrees 2 minutes and 51 seconds West and Columbus is 82 degrees 59 minutes West....

200 Miles? Hell it isn't even 200 miles from Detroit to Columbus in the first place. Check that, from Downtown columbus to Downtown Detroit is 202 miles according to Google Maps.

Methinks you need to divide by about 100.

Yeah, 2 degrees and 49 minutes is roughly 200 miles, but that's the north-south difference. According to those numbers Columbus is about 3 miles east.

It's approx. 55 miles between lines of longitude. So Col is about 2 miles further east than Det.

Just for fun (and because I'm a dork)....and this is all according to wikipedia...

A degree of longitude can (apparently) vary between 0 to 111KM.

assuming the 111KM figure (which works out to about 69 Miles of 5280 feet per mile)....We would get 364320 feet per degree of longitude.

A degree of longitude can be broken down into 60 minute intervals as well as each minute interval can be broken down into 60 second intervals....

A difference of 2 minutes and 49 seconds would work out to something like this....

364320/60 = 6072

6072/60= 101.2

2 minutes would equal about 12144, or a bit over 2 miles (2.3 to be exact)

We have 49 seconds as well (at a corresponding 101.2 per second)

101.2 * 49 = 4958.8...

added all together, we get 12144 + 4958.8 = 17102.8 or about 3.24 (rounded) miles....

:yowza:

for completeness, all figures were taken from wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longitude

Also, upon thinking about it, and further reading the Wiki page, as you go further north, or south if you are south of the Equator, Longitude lines get squeezed together a bit more. Therefore it may not be exactly 3.24 miles, but probably closer to 3.

Man alive, what is wrong with the NHL? Does Bettman really think he's going to get it as popular as the NFL by expanding to these completely idiotic markets that don't care?

They need to get it into their heads that the NHL is niche sport. Either you like it or you don't. Stop trying to get all these bandwagoners who know nothing about it into the sport, because it just won't work.

30 teams is enough as it is. In fact, it's already too many. How many f-ing teams does the NHL need anyways? There should be some sort statue of limitations on this sort of thing.

Damn Britishweights and measures system.

If done correctly the 2'49'' of longitude at Columbus lattitude should convert to about 3.43 miles. Sowe shouldbe talking about city landmarks coordinates, rather than whole cities. Anyone knows the GPS for Joe Louis vs Nationwide arenas?

Fine, it's really really close though. Here's my better argument;

Detroit is geographically closer to an eastern conference team that has changed conferences already than Columbus :P

Also, Detroit has been in the league longer and has seniority is choosing if they want to move. Detroit has more rivals in the east than Columbus. Detroit is smarter than Columbus. And I'm pretty sure Detroit's dad can beat up Columbus' dad.

If it helps, NWA is in south central Columbus, while JLA is in southEAST Detroit. According to Google Earth, JLA is 2.16 miles West of NWA.

sorry, i am a grammar and spelling nut... it is statuTe of limitations, not statue

anyways, I don't think the South needs more NHL teams. There just is not the market. eg: PHX, FLA, NSH, ATL... grow up NHL, I mean come on, hockey in Vegas? If a movie has to happen, put it in Seattle or Canada
