Why we need guys like schneider

Hahaha. Nah, the best clip by far is Z avoiding Tootoo's hit and Tootoo going into the Wings bench. That was a humbling moment for the little scrapper. You have to admit though- Tootoo's a tough cookie. He squares up a lot in those videos from youtube, and when he does he fights pretty damn well. He obviously suffers from a complete moral vacuum, but he's pretty scrappy.

I don't think the thread is supposed to be about Tootoo (although I did post this clip in the Tootoo thread), but I agree that Schneider, even in spite of his occasional turnovers, is a good physical presence that we need on the team.

Why? Sure he racks up the points, but Schneider is not good enough in his own end to warrant his current salary. Yes, I would welcome him back, but not for $3.3 million.

well not for 3.3, but something like 2.5

Which is why he'll probably end up on anoher team - probably the NY Rangers.

I don't think so.

Schneider likes Detroit and never has he indicated he would like to play for another team in the near or distant future.

If Kenny gives him 2.3-2.7 I think he'll stick around.

But then again, who am I ?

;)

As much as I love Schneider, there are a lot better options out there.

Such as? Please don't say Souray cause he's nowhere near the 3mil mark... look for him to pull in around 4 or 5.

Anything in the 2.5 to 2.7 range for Schneider is good enough for me. I like Schneider, and despite his defensive errors, I think he is a good defenseman we should keep for the right price. We don't really have any defenseman in GR that are bursting at the seems to play yet anyways (this includes Kindl for all of those who think he should immediatly become a regular).

Again, for the right price, I would certainly welcom Schneider back.

I've been a fan of Schnieder since before he came to the Wings. People blasted the guy as a puss when we got him and no matter how much I tried to convince them otherwise he's still our Rodney Dangerfield. To a man, Schneider is probably the player on the Wings most likely to defend himself by whatever means necessary. Typically, that means taking an undisciplined penalty. The shot he put on Tootoo was typical Schneider. He's a veteran player, he doesn't go looking for trouble but if he feels that you've wronged him he'll two hand you (in the head sometimes, d'oh) hack you, slash you or give you an elbow in the side of the face. Personally, I don't mind any player who does that in retaliation so long as he isn't costing you games.

Schneider won't fight but he's got as much spirit as any player in the league, especially one with his skill level. He's making alot of money but there are alot of teams that would love to have him QB'ing their PP for 3.3 mil. I dont' know if we can afford it and maybe there's a better option. The fact is we have Nick and we think Kronwall is the 2nd coming so personally, I feel we take Schneider for granted. Actually, I think we take alot of our players for granted.

As for his defensive lapses, watch any wings game and count the number of boneheaded plays and turnovers that each of our defenseman make. Remove Lids from the equation and I guarantee that Schneider is no better or worse than any of our other guys. Except maybe Lebda, I haven't noticed him giving up the puck a whole lot.

Just my opinion

I'd love to sign him for 2.5-2.7 million but i guess that will depend on the length of the contract and bonuses. He could well stay in Detroit or leave. But yeah I really like the guy and would love for him to stay.

I've been watching Schneider since he was in LA. He played a lot nastier, though his offense is about the same. He needs to play with a defensive defenseman, not Kronwall.

I've only heard potential interest in NY, as he played with the Rangers before, and is from NY. I'm sure he loves Detroit, but NY loves to overpay aging vets (Shanny not included).

Schneider is really underappreciated.

He makes 3.3m, and has been just a cut below the elite defensemen in the league.

Other offense-oriented guys who are equal to or worse than Schneider, and make as much or more:

Bryan McCabe, 7.15m

Ed Jovanovski, 7m

Rob Blake, 6m

Pavel Kubina, 5m

Sergei Gonchar, 4.5m

Brian Rafalski, 4.2m

Kim Johnsson, 4.05m

Adrian Aucoin, 4m

Derek Morris, 3.9m

Dan Boyle, 3.625m

Alexei Zhitnik, 3.5m

Schneider is 6th among defensemen in points per game. Gonchar is the only guy on that list ahead of him in that department--by .02--and Schneider is a huge upgrade over Gonchar defensively and physically. Zhitnik is the only guy on that list who is noticably better than Schneider defensively, but not better enough to turn his offensive disadvantage around.

Ultimately, Schneider is the 28th highest paid defenseman (27th if you exclude Malakhov) but in reality is one of the ten or fifteen best defensemen in the league. You know what that means? Schneider=underpaid.

Can someone please explain to me why they don't think Kindl and Quincey will make the team next year? Kindl has been great in the OHL and if it wasn't for our already stacked defense he was very close to making the team. I think Quincey has been good as well, and he's not going to develop his game further if the Wings don't give him a chance.

I like Schneider but I wouldn't pay him close to 3.3 million again, more like 2.5 at best. Not saying he would leave for more money, but if a team offers him a simaler contract, then it was nice knowing you Mathieu.

Wow, sounds like a stong argument for Schneids to look into going back to NY, or elsewhere.

No. It's an argument that while there are other guys over the past couple years who have made comparable to Schneider that some Wings fans would prefer because they are young and physical, Schneider is one of the league's best at what he does and isn't paid nearly what he COULD be. To be sitting here saying 'I wouldn't pay Schneider 3.3m' when other guys who contribute less are making TWICE that is awfully ignorant.
