I need to know the answer.

Question: Since the 4 round, best of 7, playoff format was introduced, which team has won the cup while losing the least amount of games along the way. 16 - ?

Someone help me out please.

The 1988 Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers lost only three games in four best-of-seven rounds.

According to Wikkepedia, they only lost two games. One to Detroit, and one to Winnipeg. They were at risk of losing a third game to Boston when the power wnet out at the Garden's.

But the 88 Oilers team sounds right to me.

A question that stems from that one is what Stanley Cup winning team had the most losses during their play-off run? Seeing as 12 is the most one team could have, who has come the closest to it?

I don't think anyone's gone 16-12.

I'm not sure who's come the closest.

That's a good question...it would have had to be a team for whom each round of the playoffs went to seven games.

I don't know about teams that won it but the 1997 Flyers had 11 losses.

*Edit* Damn, Toby beat me to the punch. Last year Carolina went 16-9. That's going to be hard to beat.

I went out to hockeydb and checked playoff results since the league expanded the playoffs and Carolina has the most losses of any Stanley Cup Champion with 9.

I also found that the 76 Canadiens went 12-1. That season each division champ got a first round bye. Of course the all time record for fewest playoff losses is still the 52 Red Wings with 0.

Wow, 12-1 through four rounds of the playoffs. That really is incredible.

The only thing is, in 1952 they didn't have four rounds. I believe they had two - only needed eight games to win, hence the symbolism of the octopus. Still, to go through the playoffs without a loss is impressive.

Detroit only lost two games in the first three rounds of the 1995 playoffs before they got swept by New Jersey in the Final. Then, in 1997 they lost four games - 2 to St. Louis and 2 to Colorado.
