Does the Lady Byng Trophy automatically go to the player with the lowest penalty totals, or are there other factors?

Here's Pierre Marc-Bouchard's figures of GP 80, G 19, A37 PIM 14

Here's Pavel Datsyuk's figures GP 77, G27, A59 PIM 20

From nhl.com...... The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.

Here are the last 5 winners to give you a good idea of what it takes.

2006 Pavel Datsyuk 87 pts 22 pim

2004 Brad Richards 79pts 12 pim

2003 Alexander Mogilny 79pts 12 pim

No, it's not automatic-it's voted on, but I'm too lazy to look up who votes, so I'm going to assume/guess coaches and GM's.

Kyle Wellwood is going to own the Lady Byng very soon. He's got 0 PIM in 46 games this year. Had he not been hurt for so long, he'd be the winner.

Tomas Kaberle has 20 PIM, he should be nominated.

Wellwood was on pace for 71 points. Not sure if that would have been enough. Enough to maybe be a finalist. But not the winner.

Kabelre was on pace for about 63 points if he had played all 82 games. Not sure about those point totals either.

edit: St. Louis, datsyuk and Huselius look like the finalists to me.

I don't know if he was going to win it this year, but his numbers should go up in the coming years, so he should be winning it in the near future. He's taken 7 penalties in his NHL career.

You do have to factor in that Kaberle is a defenceman (so his point totals will be lower) & plays close to 30 minutes a game. Pretty impressive to only end up with 10 penalties all year. I don't know if he should win, but he should be nominated.

Well you said if Wellwood hadn't been hurt for so long he'd "be the winner".

And maybe Kaberle will be a finalist this year. The League has to throw the Leafs some sort of bone :P

Kaberle might be a hot candidate. A lot of ice time, pretty productive, nearly no penalties ...
