Sammy back on the point....

How do you guys feel about having Sammy back on the poin on the powerplay? Personally I think he is awful back tehre and Willy was much better.... at least Willy had a cannon of a slapper. Sammy just takes his fluttter wrist shot to the goalies chest. Why doesn babs just play schneids and lids?

As much as I rag on Sammy's offensive decision-making, he's much more solid on the point during the PP than Williams ever was.

Because then you're putting all your eggs in one basket. Lids and Schneids can't be out there for the entire 2 minutes.

Thats a sweet, crystal clear avatar. I can't find a good one with Z. :(

I think Sammy is more valuable that most of you guys think, he has one of the best wrist shots on the team and strong wrist shooter is something we don't have many of. He also shoots right (we only have like 4 who do) and played so well in the last regular season game, I think he'll come on and pinch in goals, not as many as Z or Dats, but a few. I think he is worth the 1.6 mil he makes.

I don't think either one is that good. That's what happens when you use a forward on the point. Defensemen are used to handling the puck at the blue line. They do it the whole game. Forwards, not so much.

I'm a center but I fill in on defense from time to time. The hardest part about switching is taking that pass from down low, keeping it in the zone, and then making a decent shot on net. Especially when some kamikazi is flying out at you trying to clear the zone and you know any mistake on your part is a breakaway in the other direction.

I'm not a huge Mikael Samulesson fan, but he is a lot better than Williams. At least, to a certain degree, Samulesson has a decent shot. Williams, at least I thought, had a pretty weak shot compared to Samulesson.

On another note, playing the point on the PP also gives him a reason to take fruitless shots now, as they could go in, so more power to him! :P

You guys have to realize that just because Williams sucked at the point doesn't mean Samuelsson would. Sammy has experience on the point from back in Sweden and in the Olympics.

It's a good choice.

A good wrist shot doesn't mean much when you're playing at the blueline on PP's...I agree he can be an asset if used properly, but with shooting accuracy like his, that means not taking shots further than 15-20 feet from the net.

i agree, thats why i would never play defense. You are always the last line and any mistake is easily noticable and will probably lead to a goal. I suppose that just makes what lidstrom does so easily even that much more admirable.

Williams rarely ever let go of his cannon at the point.

Look, I know we all get frustrated that Samuelsson probably shoots a bit too much, but it's catch-22. At least he's willing to take those chances for an unusual rebound/deflection.

Would I rather have guys like Lebda have more PP time at the point? Of course. But with Kronwall being injured, that's PP time taken away, and you won't see guys like Chelios or Markov on the PP much, for better/worse, hence Samuelsson probably being there.

He's not my first choice there, but the Wings could do a lot worse.

And Lidstrom and Schneider so play a lot of the PP time on the points.

Not like there's ever any traffic in front of the net when he takes his blue line wristers.

This idea is sheer stupidity.

Bottom line, Sammy is pretty much useless on the point, just like Williams was. The way I see it, if you are going to put a forward back on the point it needs to be a bonified star, like Fedorov or Yzerman in the past or a player of Kovalchuk's ability (although I dont like Atlanta's PP with him on the point, but that's rant for another time). Throwing a forward on the point who adds little offense and is a huge defensive liability scares me. There were numerous times during game 1 when i was just waiting for the Flames to score shorthanded due to Sammy at the point, and I fear it will happen at some point in time during the playoffs. What does he offer that you can't get out of Ledba?

I'd like to see some verification of this. Article, stats, scouting report etc... He looks lost out there and made a horrible decision to pinch in during the first PP in gm. 1 against Calgary that led to a 2 on 1 for them. Then on our next PP in that game he was forced to play a little D in our own end and took a penalty negating our PP and giving the Flames one. I agree with Nik and Schneids to start for 1min, then Nik and Lebda for the last minute. That means you can come back with Markov and Schneids/Cheli when the penalty ends too. I cringed every time Willy was on the point and I do the same now when I see Sams there. It's a bad idea.

I think they should put Hudler back on the ponit... hes got a cannon of a slapper... So pp lines are...

PP1 Homer Z Dats

Lids Huds

PP2 Flippula Lang Bertuzzi

Schneider Lebda

I dont think Hudler can even skate backwards.. and he is the slowest guy on the team.. if he mishandles the puck on the point or coughs it up, he's not getting back..
