Shootouts in the playoffs...HELL NO...

Shootouts in the regular season...eh they are fun to watch so why not, I like watching them.

As far as the "shootouts shouldn't control who makes the playoffs" argument, then all shootout points have to be taken out not just the last game of the season so no whining Toronto...

Here are the standings without ANY shootout wins:

1Ottawa 103 pts (46 Wins)

2New Jersey 97 pts

3Atlanta 90 pts

4Buffalo 103 Pts (43 Wins)

5Pittsburgh 95 Pts

6Carolina 88 Pts

7Toronto 87 Pts

8Montreal 85 Pts

9Florida 84 Pts (33 Wins)

10New York Rangers 84 Pts (33 Wins)

11NY Islanders 84 Pts (32 Wins)

12Tampa Bay 83 Pts

13Washington 69 Pts

14Boston 65 Pts

15Philadelphia 55 Pts

1Detroit 111 Pts

2Anaheim 106 Pts

3Vancouver 100 Pts

4San Jose 105 Pts

5Nashville 104Pts

6Dallas 98 Points

7Minnesotta 94 Pts

8Calgary 93 Pts

9Colorado 90 pts

10St Louis 75 PTs

I got lazy but you got the point...

Moral of the story, the shootout is now part of the regular season, and i think that that is cool. BUT i also agree that it is not for the playoffs at ALL.

One abnormally long OT and all of a sudden it's time to do away with them to "protect the players?" Oh my dear God.

On a related note, can anyone tell me what the legal consequences are for beating someone to death with a stack of their own columns?

Well, if you felt your IQ was in danger after reading them, I guess you have a self-defence case on your hands.

if she had any jounalistic credibilty before this article, it should be lost forever, as should her articles. I disagree with everything she said in this article, and the part about shootouts deciding who makes the playoffs...i dont know where to get this info, but can someone find out if shoot out points got one team in the playoffs instead of another?

Utter crap. "Hockey players are not warriors, and they are not courageous"?!

By the way, the Islanders beat Toronto by one point for the final playoff spot by virtue of their shootout win against New Jersey in the last game of the regular season. (Toronto would've won the tiebreaker had the Islanders lost.)

That chick is whack!

Her thoughts are typical of the new and improved thought policing society that we live in. They try to make children's sports have no losers... they all get to win. This is just the politically correct "next step" in her crazed agenda. Soon there will be 30 winners in the NHL every year. They all deserve it because, "They're good enough, smart enough and dog-gone it, people like them."

If you asked one of these poor abused hockey players their thoughts on winning the Stanley Cup via a shootout, I think they would either kick your ass and/or vomit... what a joke.

I have hated the shoot-out since day one, and nothing will change that. It is a stupid way to decide a winner, and the Red Wings suck at them so it makes it even worse. I would consider not watching playoff hockey if they ever put this idea of shoot-outs into effect. Knowing Bettman, he will think this is a brilliant idea and put it into place next season. This is pure insanity from Yorio.

I used shootout stats from http://jeays.net/shootout/index.htm. I'm assuming it's accurate but have not verified it. It's just the first google hit I had that contained shootout wins.

Given that, here is the list of teams in order by their "adjusted" standings taking in to account the points they got from shootouts (but not dealing with tie breakers). The last 2 columns are 'SO Wins' and 'Adjusted'. Adjusted is equal to 'Pts' - 'SO Wins'. Of course this does not account for the manner in which a team would play in the 5 minute overtime. With the shootout they might play more defensively to get to the shootout while lacking a shootout they'd play for the win in the 5 minutes of overtime. I apologize for the formatting but I didn't have time to make it pretty.

Basically this shows the same teams in the West would have made it in but seeded differently (Detroit would still be #1 and we'd still be playing Calgary first round).

The east is different. The Islanders and Tampa Bay would be out and Carolina and Toronto would be in. Someone help me out with the tie breakers but I think the Rangers might even have been out of it with Montreal taking their place. They would have equal points and wins but I can't remember if GF is the next tie breaker or if it's the GF/GA differential.

I was just about to post about this. WOW! Kara Yorio had, in the past, pretty much lost so much credibility to me that I'd stopped caring what she said.. but woooooooooooowwwwww. I hope the fans crucify her for this. Wow. That's all I can say. Wow. What a moron.

Just out of curiosity I wonder how much hate mail she receives from true hockey fans like ourselves who are duped in to reading her drivel because we think it might actually have something do with hockey,....

Okay, let's determine the cup winner through a shootout, let's do it! Let's get rid of the most exciting thing in the playoffs, sudden death, let's do it! Dumb.

How does she even have a job? She is a terrible writer and beyond that has no respect for the game and little knowledge of it. The Sporting News must have gotten in trouble for not having enough female employees so they hired her to cover their butts.

I've actually written a comment to her suggesting that she report on something that she actually knows about. Her articles are usually full of glaring errors and incorrect stats. She is the worst hockey writer I've ever encountered.

I hereby decree by the powers vested in me that for now and ever on that anyone who is guilty of committing an aggregious error of that highest magnitude shall be deemed to have "PULLED A YORIO".

Score on your own net... you've just pulled a Yorio.

Drop a touchdown pass... you've pulled a Yorio too.

Walk in the winning run... you have now pulled a Yorio jackass!

Maybe if her boss hears of enough people who've pulled a Yorio eventually

she'll get canned.

i have even better idea. after one shootout round they should have a hardest shot competition. if its still tied after that we can do the fastest skater. then just repeat those until we have a winner. then coaches can take everyone out for pizza afterwards for trying their hardest.

Yorio vomits all over the screen and for some reason people read it. Good for a bit of a laugh now and again, but honestly she is wrong so often that if you just accept that the opposite of what she writes is true, you'd come off as a fairly knowledable fan....

How is this woman still employed? Seriously, how?

Just when I think she can't reach a higher level of idiocy, there she goes.

Let's decide who wins the Stanley Cup with the shootout! And while we're at it...

Let's determine the World Series winner with a home run derby!

Let's determine the NBA Finals winner with a slam dunk competition!

Let's determine the Super Bowl winner with...uhm...whoever does the best end zone dance! (can you tell I don't watch football?)

Just as idiotic, just as Yorio.

You know, I have an idea...I know some people like to call things "retarded", although that's not exactly the most polite term to use for such things. So in its place, why don't we just use "Yorio"?

Example:

"Shootouts in the playoffs would be fun!"

"Shut up, dude, you're so Yorio."

Hockey players are not warriors or courageous? Okay, Ms. Yorio, does your job require you to block a 100 MPH slap shot from Zdeno Chara, or finish your column 5 minutes after receiving a broken nose?

I didn't think so. Please die or get a new profession where you aren't paid for your opinion. Whichever comes first.

I like it, although it backfired on the guy from the Office... Pulling a Schrute fell on deaf ears.

I think we should try it anyway... that chick totally pulled a her on this one.
