The Joe is the toughest building to play in

As far as regular season goes, it would more than likely be the Wings are such a good home team. The crowd, on some nights, looks totally dead sometimes. Some of the earlier games this season, or more recently like the March game against the LA Kings, were a joke with how quiet the crowd was.

Now, when it comes to playoffs the crowd is definitly a factor. During the playoffs, the atmosphere is electric, even this year when there hasn't been a playoff sellout yet. I really think during some of the regular season games, like against good teams, or in the playoffs the crowd plays a huge role in the game.

Could be that they are afaird of the place caving in on them and just want to get the hell out!!!

Mellon Arena is a lot worse then The Joe. Mellon Arena is also almost 20 years older. It makes you wonder how that arena is still operating.

The Hockey News did their player poll survey. I thought this was interesting

I know everyone likes to rip on all the suits at The Joe. I've said myself several times I think Nashville has a far better atmospher than The Joe.

Better atmosphere? It may be noisier, but noise isn't necessarily atmosphere. Have they even figured out what off-sides is down there yet? There’s nothing like the buzz at the Joe before a game. The Joe doesn’t get loud like the Saddledome or GM Place, and I don’t agree that it’s nearly the toughest place to play, but you can sense that the fans have an understanding for the game.

ESPN did a poll this year as well from 20% of the players, and they asked a bunch of questions.. noteably:

QUESTION 6: WHICH TEAM HAS THE MOST INTIMIDATING FANS?

Flyers

Flyers

• TOP VOTE-GETTER: Philadelphia Flyers (24%).

• Flyers page | Schedule | Player stats

• Everyone thinks their city has the best fans, but NHL players on average find Philly to be the most intimidating. From the "Broad Street Bullies" to the "Legion of Doom," Flyers fans are knowledgeable, passionate and, um, vocal. Remember, Philly fans even booed Santa Claus.

• OTHER MENTIONS: Montreal Canadiens (22%); Calgary Flames (19%); Edmonton Oilers (10%); San Jose Sharks (9%); Toronto Maple Leafs (6%); Minnesota Wild (3%); Detroit Red Wings (3%); Vancouver Canucks (2%); New York Rangers (2%); Columbus Blue Jackets (1%).

So I think the result here is that the Joe is tough to play in cuz of the team, while the atmosphere and fans clearly go to places like Philly Calgary and Montreal. Even Edmonton.
