HuntsVegas Baby 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2007 Unless I'm mistaken the Anaheim Ducks will be the Wings' opponent in the Second Round, and if so, they will have to face an even better goalie than Kiprusoff, meaning: Jean-Sebastien Giguere (look at his playoff figures)! If I'm not mistaken Giggy only started once versus Minnesota. Bryzgalov had 3 of the 4 wins. But nor here nor there, Kipper played his ass off and we took 4 out of 6 and pound for pound that guy is one of the best.
akustyk 84 Report post Posted April 23, 2007 IMO that's why we lost two games to calgary. not gonna talk about Game 3 which I haven't seen, but in Game 4 Flames were clogging blue line all the way with 1 guy up front and 4 manning their zone. and the refs gave them 5-on-3 when necessary which virtually sealed Wings fate. that was definitely not a game lost because we sold to their style of play. we sure didn't have it easy to break into zone with 4 Flames defending the net. no matter which goalie we end up facing, we still need to pepper him with 40 shots a game. If the other goalies aren't as good as kipper, (which only time can tell), then we'll destroy whoever we play and win each game 10-1. quite a simplification. we're not gonna be able to pepper every West team with 40 shots. most certainly not Stars and Ducks who, unlike Flames, do play some defense and not rely on goalie pulling a Jesus Christ. I guess my point is just that we need to play inspired hockey, and we need to play our game. If we do so, no matter which team we play I predict wings 4-2 in the series. right. if we play our hockey we are able to win it with all teams in West. but I don't think we will be able to play our game all the time. every opposing team will try to bring us out of that, and you can't expect Wings to be able to do their job all 60 minutes, at home and on the road. we need to be able to play different than usually. Babcock made Wings play dump'n'chase in Game 1 (rather than usual puck posession) and it stunned Flames giving us an easy win. and we need such trumps to have a good chance about other teams. not our game, but a hockey we still can hold our own. Yes, "the Dominator" has the name, and the aura, and the mystique, but look at the number of shots that Kiprusoff faced and the number that Hasek faced, then at the number of goals scored; the offense and the defense are what's carried this team along so far. I do not mean to demean Hasek's worth as a goalie, I merely mean to look at the statistics, "Just the facts ma'am," as Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack Webb) used to say in the TV series "Dragnet." I don't understand the bulk of this post. Don't get me wrong, I am one of the biggest anti-Hasek posters. However, I am a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due, and Dom is due. Yeah, he played subpar in the 2 losses in Calgary. But there is no denying that Hasek played great in the 3 games in Detroit, and was simply out of his mind in game 6 (excluding the Iginla goal, which he didn't really see). If you want to look at just the facts, then look at this. Hasek won 4 games, Kipper won 3. In the playoffs, it doesn't matter how you win, it's that you win. In every game Hasek made at least one ridiculous save. So come on, give him his due!
Guest Crymson Report post Posted April 23, 2007 Ehhhhhhhh, Dom didn't face an average of 40+ shots a game, which definitely helped Wtf? What's to say that he wouldn't have stopped all of them also? Doom and gloomers represent, I guess. Many thanks to the posters who clued me in on the reseeding process, my mistake! To KevinD, thanks for your kind words. To all: Living so far away, with absolutely no chance to see Hasek or any other Red Wing in action, I have to rely on your analyses, or what I read in the various sport sites I surf; so, I noticed that there was a great disparity between the number of shots and goals that Hasek saw, and the number of shots and goals that Kiprusoff saw, and that was my only basis of comparison for the two goalies. From what I've read from all of you, I guess my statistical comparison didn't fully reflect what Hasek had been doing, and what you were able to observe. In any case I'm sure we've all been heartened by the Wings' performance in the first round after the early season hope for them was to merely reach the playoffs, and now we can see them as a very serious Stanley Cup contender! I managed to catch one hockey game during the year-plus I spent living in Israel. That one, unfortunately, was game 4 against the ducks in '03. Booooooo. Where do you presently reside, achi?
