Game 6 Officials

Dear Mr. Bettman,

I would like to point out that the officiating that took place in game 6 of the Red Wings/ Flames playoff series was the absolute best officiating that I have seen all season long. The referees let the playersplay hockey. They were near invisible, but stepped up and made the call that was necessary at the time.

This is the first game all season long that I didn't sit there scratching my head at a call. If it was obvious, it was called. If it was incidental, it wasn't.

Please give the Red Wings the same referee crew for the rest of the playoffs.

Thanks,

Me.

The only bone I had to pick was the phantom Goaltender Interference call on my boy Homer in late the first!

yes thats complete bs. I watched CBC after that 1st INT and Hrudey and Maclean said it was a good call. That got me pretty angry but when the Mule ended it who cares. :D

The "phantom" call as you refer to it was the direct result of the Flames meltdown in game 5. They quite correctly pointed out to the league that if the Wings are going to drive a Flames player into their own goalie that's still goaltender interference. The crew in Detroit wasn't making that call and they should have been.

You're right, Homer didn't touch Kipper on the play. Instead he shoved Stuart into him. It's still interference according to the rules.

I agree. The CBC announcers even said it was a bad call. The Versus commentators even said it was a bad call.

They both said that there was no contact.

But all-in-all it was a pretty well called game.

Well I guess it depends on how you are judging the refs. According to how the NHL was planning to call the playoffs, the refs did a terrible job. They let tons of things go. They didn't do the job that the NHL had set out for refs to do in the playoffs.

That being said, and all things considered, I think, in my opinion, it was the best officiated game in the series that's for sure. It was pretty even. If they let things go on one side, they let the same things go on the other, pretty consistently. I thought some of the calls were phantom calls as well but they didn't have a big affect on the game...from a Detroit perspective. Since the flames were living on the power play they could argue exactly the opposite.

Ummm, like the time YOUR players pushed our player into Kipper and a goal was disallowed as a result? That was in Game 5- in Hockeytown. Don't give me that BS. The refs don't call it when you player TRIPS Dom behind his net during a play and we let it go- everyone here expects Dom to get shafted by the officials- he has a bad rep for flopping and as a result he gets stiffed in every other area (see: Peter Forsberg).

Regardless, this interference with Kipper garbage is retarrrrddded. You guys interfered with Dom just the same- and so does EVERY other team with EVERY other goalie.

I honestly didn't have a problem with the call on Homer. He was skating backwards, he got into the blue paint, he MAY have bumped Kipper a little. The refs sent the message that no contact was going to be tolerated early.

It was funny though, when Kipper got hit by one of his own players' stick and he flopped down screaming for a call. I wish we had scored on that one.

I want the players to decide the outcome of games. Not the refs, not Gary Bettman, not the networks. The players. This game allowed the players to decide the outcome. The calls in OT, every one of them, I agreed with. I have never had that happen before.

If Hasek doesn't get many interference calls its because he has a league wide reputation for diving the moment he feels a breeze in his vicinity.

There's no doubt the goal you referred to should have counted. On the other hand, Hank's second that night shouldn't have because Homer bumped Kipper aside just as the shot was coming.

It's not garbage. It seemed to be the only way the Wings could get a puck past him at times. I don't fault the Wings for playing that way. You have to play right up to the edge of the refs tolerance and they did a great job.

Well I didn't see him bump Kipper at all. And I recognized Hasek's rep, but that doesn't change the fact that he does get bumped and hit and nudged just like Kipper does. It's part of hockey, and in the end the Flames got it no worse then any other team does/did this year.

Ok did anyone even see any player on the Red Wings running or hitting Kipper without being pushed

For the most part what I saw was incidental contact. I didn't really even see anything but a Wing at least making the attempt to not steamroll Kipper.

Hell, our goali is breakable too. Why would we want to start that?

I don't think that it is our fault that Kipper was being a wuss about being bumped around a bit. He is welcome to flop and dive on the ice if he thinks he is being moletsted.

Oh well... he's golfing now. So he doesn't have to worry about someone bumping into him.

I don't think it was Kipper being a wuss, just the Calgary team being overprotective of their meal ticket and trying to use the NHL rulebook to their fullest benefit (which is exactly what any smart team would do!).

That being said- of course I got tired of hearing them ***** about Kipper being treated like an NHL goalie and not a 13 year old girl with hemophilia.

I was happy with the refereeing in the last game. I just don't understand why the Flames were allowed to cross-check Bert all they wanted and thus knock him down. I love clean, physical hockey but constantly checking someone with your stick has nothing to do with it.

But all in all, refs kept the game in control and certainly didn't decide the outcome of the game. Guys were allowed to play hard and there weren't stoppages all the time. Not to mention we owned the Flames 5-on-5.

I thought it was the best officiated game of the series.

IMO the calls on Homer and Bertuzzi were weak but at least there were no cheap calls to put one team on a 5-3 powerplay.

I thought the referring was okay, there were no blatant phantom calls in my opinion, but at the same time, I didn't like the fact that there were calls that were not made.

It goes back to the inconsistency thing. Why are some things called in some games and not in others. I understand that it is a very difficult job, but they clearly put the whistle away on occasion. I thought in the new NHL, this was not supposed to happen?

If they decide that this is how the games will be officiated, I am okay with that, I will be slightly unhappy since skilled players will be held back, but at least I will know that is the intent. Don't tell me that you are going to call the clutching and grabbing and then ignore it when it happens.
