Octopus

Judging by your statements, it seems like you're confusing throwing a dead octopus on the ice and gang-rapping a player with a dead octopus. Big difference.

Not in Japan, especially not if its a high school female hockey team...

Hey, im goin to the game tonight and i got a couple of octopi, and im jsut wondering if anyone has ever thrown one onto the ice? do you know if you get kicked out of the game right away? is it worth it?

Yeah bro, you GOTTA do it. I dont think you'll get in any trouble. And it will definitely pump up the crowd and the Wings. Im going to game 2, and If I knew how to get my hands on some octopi I would so be doing it as well. GO WINGS!!!

If octopus chucking is this known tradition going back 50 some odd years, and the Wings PR Dept. has made a fortune out of marketing the octopus as a symbol of your team, then why on earth are people tossed from the game when tossing seafood onto the ice? It seems contradictory. Isn't this behavior implicitly encouraged by the Wings?

I don't get it.

Don't you think it would get annoying if fans could throw things on the ice without any repercussions?

They don't want hundreds of octopuses thrown on the ice. However, I'm sure they like it when there is at least one. I would be surprised if they kicked them out.

Most likely escort them out of their seats for a bit.

Just wait untill the end oof the game(if the wings are winning of course) make sure you aim for the Sharks bench.

I'll money-order you $50 if you smack Big Joe in the head with that octopus.

$500 if it sticks to his face like 'Aliens'.

How are you planning to get it in? Last game I went to (Detroit @ Columbus, 3rd to last game of the season) they searched me pretty good. Then again, it's columbus & I was in a wings jersey. Undoubtedly they knew I was looking for trouble.

True. There was that whole rat thing in Florida that got WAAAAAYYYYYY out of hand. But I can't see the octopus thing getting that out of hand because it's so disgusting. I mean, sure all the fans love it, but how many are willing to DO IT? If I were a dyed-in-the-wool life long Wings fan I'd still think twice about shoving a dead smelly mollusk into my purse. That's just nasty.

Don't know how true it is, but the play-by-play folks a couple years ago were talking about the officials charging detroit with a Delay of Game due to fans tossing the invertabrates on the ice. If that is indeed possible, than JLA has to go through the motions of trying to prevent it from happening so it can claim 'the fans did it', and that they are in no way responsible.

This whole octopus connection has gotten WAY out of hand. Merchandise, a glowing, sneering giant octopus hanging over the ice? An octopus on a Wing's goalie mask? Why can't fans throw plush or plastic octopi a la Panthers '96? Throwing dead mollusks at your heroes cannot be considered worship--frankly it is extremely overrated/outdated. And disgusting. Personally I would hate to be on the ice and see that kind of thing happening. And before people argue TRADITION there are some pretty heinous things done in the name of it so that's not a solid argument.

BLASPHEMY!!!!!!

Stone Him!!!!!

Well tonight it was thrown on the ice during the end of the national anthem!!!

I saw Al swinging it around on the way out to one of the commercial breaks. It was HUGE!

Yes, but was that the same one that Yc172 was talking about smuggling in to the Joe when he/she started this thread? I'd like to hear the rest of that story...

I'm waiting for the whodunit as well.

If it was in fact Yc172 who threw the octopus...could you do it again on Saturday? I'm just a little superstitious. :D

Please explain the Bernie phenomenon to an outsider. It doesn't get the same play as the octopus story, so I'm not sure of the significance. Thanks.
