Giguere or Michelin Man you Decide

Giggy's pads are legal but it's a joke that they are. He's the main reason why there should be no crying or complaining if the NHL ever increases the size of the nets (which will happen in the next 5 years).

I thought it was great that Kelly Hrudey called him out yesterday saying that he has no athletism but uses his large pads and sound positioning to be affective. Seriously, when's the last time anyone saw him make a spectacular glove save? It's because he has no upperbody reflexes.

J.S.Giguere is the one of the sole reasons why hockey isn't as exciting as it was in the 80's and early 90's. It's also the NHL's fault for letting players like Giguere push the envelope as far as 'legal' equipment goes.

The nets will be 6 inches wider and longer by 2010, in my opinion, and when that happens, goalies like Giguere better learn a trade or save their money because they won't be the NHL for long.

Absolutely comical post.

When a players equiptment is LEGAL, and you opposing club fans CONTINUE to gripe about it ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU LOSE, what do you think that looks like? There is a way to beat JS and score but shooting into his stomach, legs, and low glove side aint it. Sorry he doesnt flop, roll, and flail like the great Dominator but he plays sound hockey as taught by Francois Allaire a guy that also coached one Mr Roy.

Kelly Hrudey? Youre happy because a former LA King called him out for having no athleticism?????? The same Kelly Hrudey that played in ONE Stanley Cup final in a 15 year career? The same Hrudey that has a record in goal of a sparkling 271-265-88, a career just above .500???????????? The same Hrudey that posted a CAREER 3.43 GAA??????????? Yeah, taking what he says as gospel about a goaltender is a GREAT IDEA. LOL.

If JS is the reason hockey isnt exciting, you obviously dont dont have a clue. JS doesnt make acrobatic plays to make a highlight reel. He has an incredible defense in front of him and Detroit averages 6 shots on goal per period. If hockey isnt as exciting as it was in the 80's, send a message to Detroit to figure out a way to shoot the puck at even strength and jazz the game up a bit. 2 junk goals, power play, and a shortie and this is supposed to be exciting and WIN A CUP? Less than 20 shots per game is what makes games not so exciting. When a D collapses on you and you cant get an even strength shot off, is that JS Gigueres fault? Try another one buddy.

2 words, Conn Smythe. You dont get those for the size of your pads. You get those for holding an opponent to 1 goal in a best of 7 series. You get them for keeping your opponents scoreless in OT's for 168 minutes. You get them for going 11-1 in playoff OT's (including another W last night). He's allowed 2 or less goals in this playoff run in all but 2 games this year (last night 3 goals). Cry about his pads, take Kelly Hrudeys opinion as fact, but understand this man is a monster in the playoffs.

Ken Dryden put is best. He said that the larger equipment does things psychologically to a shooter. If they see very little space, they think pass instead of shoot. But I don't expect you to know who Ken Dryden even is.

And it's funny that you mention Roy. After he retired he was one of the first guys to say that the equipment is rediculously huge and should be cut back.

Kelly Hrudey? Youre happy because a former LA King called him out for having no athleticism?????? The same Kelly Hrudey that played in ONE Stanley Cup final in a 15 year career? Now you're really showing your lack of hockey intelligence.

Where to start? First, Kelly Hrudey talked to Giggy and he said himself that he lacks athleticism and relies on making himself big and cutting down angles.

Secondly, just because you weren't a great hockey player doesn't mean you don't know the sport. Look at Ken Holland (again, do you know who he is?). He was a terrible NHL goalie and yet he's one of the best GM's ever.

Scotty Bowman? Again, didn't make the NHL but did do something like win 9 Cups.

Herb Brooks - couldn't even make the US National Mens team and yet has gone down as one of the best NCAA coaches of all time as well as cementing himself as an international legend.

See the pattern here? Just because you might not have been the best pro doesn't mean you don't know what you're talking about. And since Hrudey DID play in the NHL and won a CUP I'll take his word over a bandwagon jumper like yourself who probably wouldn't know a hockey player if he slept with Bobby Orr (again, you'll probably have to google the name).

Giggy doesn't make acrobatic saves because he can't. First, he doesn't have the reflexes or talent to do so. Secondly, he's so packed full of sofa cushions he can't move to do so.

3 words - Dead Puck Era. Giggy won the Conn Smythe based off of several things:

1. That series was beyond boring and nobody else looked good in it. Who else could you pick? Giggy looked like a hero because his 8th seeded team went all the way.

2. Clutching and grabbing and neutral zone trapping made it infinitately easier for teams to play good D. When Giggy was challenged with a serious chance he was beaten often. I still remember that Elias shot that went top shelf on him. Giggy didn't even more. With most goalies they'll at least wave at it, but he didn't even move. That's because he's too slow.

3. He had even larger pads than he did now, making all of the above even more exaggerated.

In the end, Giggy is a bad goalie with great D and big pads to cover up his shortcomings.

You can insult Hasek all you like but the man has only won several Vezina's and has a Cup himself. Does Giggy have a Cup? Does he have any Hart Trophy's or Vezina's? Nope. Didn't think so.

Back to your cave troll.

If you're going to insult them and say they don't know anything about hockey, at least get your facts straight. The Ducks were the 7th seed and I believe a guy named Brodeur would dispute what you said about a talentless series. I know who all the players are. Are you assuming that they don't know these things because they're a Californian? Kelly Hrudey is an idiot. Goaltending IS positioning. What's the FIRST thing you learn as a goalie? The 6 positions. Left side goal line, left circle, left side blue line, right side blue line, right circle, right side goal line. How do I know this? I play. I do it every practice. First thing. To say HE makes hockey boring is hilarious. He doesn't have to make acrobatic saves. He doesn't flop his body around like Hasek and put himself in positions where he might have to. He's not as athletic, but that doesn't matter. It's not his game. There are so many styles of goaltending. To say Giguere is a bad goalie or not one of the top 10 is just ignorant, but then again, ignorance is bliss.

Can't we just all agree to disagree? :P

That's perfectly fine with me, just don't accuse someone of ignorance when you yourself don't have the facts right (not directed at you KP)

I see it this way. Props to Giguere. He has found a way to be successful in the NHL, and yes - it's largely based on his positional play, which is also aided by his large pads and ability to bend the rules. But, if it WAS illegal, he would have been busted for it long ago.

Kelly Hrudey was dead on with his analysis of him though. He is NOT acrobatic and does not possess the skill or athletics of a Brodeur or Hasek. Because of this, he can be exposed with high shots and cross crease passing. The Wings have to find a way to do this much better if they want to beat him.

IMO, something has to be done about the equipment size for goalies in the NHL. Brodeur is successful without it, so is Hasek. If the NHL wants to create more goals they need to make the nets bigger and really start restricting the chest protectors. If Brodeur can play with his and not get hurt AND still put up great numbers, why can't goalies like Giguere be able to? It would be nice to see goalies who rely on their size and the size of their pads rather then their athleticism and skill exposed for once.

Don't forget also that the instigator penalty was created and that "system" play began really ramping up during this same time.
