Gary Bettman just said wings' best current rivals are colorado, CHICAGO and ST. LOUIS

lol now they are talking about how Buffalo hasn't really had to leave the state so far these playoffs, and the wings have to go back and forth back and forth across the country and into wester Canada.

Ottawa is closer to Buffalo than NYC. I can just imagine lindy ruff renting a few conversion vans from hertz when going on a roadtrip to ottawa :P

probably because he watched a whole game once in the late 80s, and he kinda remembers hearing something about a big brawl with colorado.

He's either that out of touch with the game, or he thinks the fans are idiots.

or both.

Perhaps Bettman has a dictionary with a definition of "current" with which I'm not familiar.

Yeah...as much as I WANT the Wings-Hawks rivalry back, that's a pretty ridiculous statement.

Colorado: 2002 WCF was the last gasp for that one.

Chicago: Hawks haven't been relevant in 10 years.

St. Louis: Would've been a top 3 rival just before the lockout when they were the 2nd best team in the Central, but certainly not now.

All of which begs the question: who ARE the Wings' top 3 rivals? Nashville probably. Who else? Calgary? Meetings in two of the last three playoffs, with some bad blood between the teams. Kind of ridiculous to call it a rivalry though. Columbus? Only in their minds. Can't be anyone from the East, we only play them every three years. Nobody else in the West jumps out at me as having any kind of argument, let alone a good one.

Conclusion: we don't HAVE three rivals. Even the one semi-legit one we do have really only goes back to the 2004 playoffs.

Bettman's gotta play the Commish card there...touting/defending the "division rivalry" format that allows us to play such entertaining matchups teams 8 times a year...

Toronto will always be a rival, be it in the East or West.

I live in Saint Louis and Blues fans don't even consider us a rival anymore, not since the lockout. The Blues have been fighting with the Blue Jackets and Blackhawks for the worst team in the division. Nashville is our biggest rival now. I hate everything about Nashville. I still cannot for the life of me understand why anyone thought hiring Bettman was a good idea

Raise your hand if you hate Bettman.............................

He's made the owners money, which is why he's still employed as NHL commissioner.

However, if you look up spin doctor or liar in Websters there will be a picture of Gary Bettman.

To stand behind statements like today's he'd need to live in the Twilight Zone or Bizzaro World.

" blah blah blah 12 inter-division games per season....shootout playoff OTs....expand the nets by 4 feet...eliminate fighting....implement mind-reading technology so that even thinking about hooking is a 2 minute penalty....spandex jerseys.....Sidney Crosby will get at least 1 PS a game to display his skill and lure in fans....90 game season....decrease puck size.....have Kentucky replace Detroit in the Central division and have Detroit play in the Fun In The Sun Division featuring new teams in Santa Fe, San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas...travel is not an issue"

Yep, that about sums up Gary Bettman's interview.
