Shawn Thornton's job

Was it just me or did anybody else think that Thornton was a little overzealous in dropping the mits with Markov? It was nothing more than another shove or 2 between 2 guys after a save and the next thing you know Thornton's gloves are off.

Me thinks Mr. Carlyle has given specific instructions to Thornton and Brad May and prolly his entire team that the Wings have a depleted defense corps and any opportunity to instigate a fight with Markov or Lilja or Cleary or Malts works out in the Ducks favor. Think about it, we aren't likely to beat those guys up in a straight fight and the exchange is they lose one of their 3rd/4th line fighters and we lose a top 4 defenseman or PKer. Smart on Mr. Carlyle's part but I don't like it.

On another note, does anybody else get annoyed with Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz? Kunitz is alright I suppose, heck of a young player, can score, hit and i've seen him scrap once or twice but something about the little pipsqueak just makes me want to jump through the TV and pound his face into the ice. McDonald's even worse, always getting in extra shots in every scrum knowing he'll never have to fight b/c he's got a team of bruisers to do that for him. God I hate that guy. I remember watching them play Nashville a couple months ago and McDonald was just getting tossed all over the ice b/c the Preds couldn't take him anymore. They were undisciplined about it but you could just see how annoyed they were with him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he has his head down and Markov lays him out cold.

Oh yeah, great win too.

Yep, I thought he'd surely get the extra 2 minutes for instigating since his were clearly off before Markov's. Nice going ref!

Yep, kinda the same thing the entire league says about Maltby. But I still like him!!!!

Cheers!

I don't think Thornton need specific instructions to understand that anytime he can get a defenseman to the box with him, it's usually a good thing for his team...

In regards to McDonald and Kunitz play. They're taking advantage of playing on a tough team and if you think about it, there's no reason they shouldn't.

my thoughts exactly.

we'll have to live with it and keep our cool. we actually need to because once these kids see their tactics isn't working they'll be getting frustrated. and with their young players getting frustrated our chances raise

I think there were definetly instruction's given out to the Ducks players to do as much damage as they could to the Wings defence know how depleted it was. Also the amount of times they where running Dom and getting away with it was a complete joke. The ref's better get they're heads out of their butts come game 2 tomorrow night and start calling the game's more evenly.

I would have to say the refs were terrible lastnight, as long as you didn't "hook or Hold" someone you could do anything you wanted, even punch a goalie in the face. We need to have more offense, I was extremly upset with our lack of offense and I blame most of it on bulls*** penalties, but its all in the past, I was extremly proud of our guys on the way they hung in there and got the W. Keep it up boys. I think the Wings can play any style any team wants. I think Anaheim is playing just like Calgary did and hopefully it won't belong and they will just as frustrated, as long as we don't get stupid. GO WINGS!!!!

Who cares. The fight had absolutely no bearing on the game whatsoever. In fact, it was probably one of the least memorable fights in a game Ive seen in probably a decade. Nothing really happened and nothing really came of it.

I don't think I wouldve even remembered there had been a fight in the game if this thread hadnt been posted.

I'd hardly call that a fight. Markov didn't really have a chance to get into it.... But after it was all over, we had a defensemen in the box for five minutes. Everyone in the building knew the Wings didn't need that.

After the poor officiating in Game 1 (which we miraculously survived), I wonder if they'll give us a few breaks tomorrow. it could help.

Did you feel that breeze blowing through your hair? That was the point zipping right over your head.

They lose Thornton for 5 minutes, we lose Markov. Who do you think benefits from that?

Not too mention the guys they have that will fight are far more likely to hurt one of our players in a fight than the other way around.

Hindsight is nice and you're spot on that it made no difference in the outcome of the last game. But if you don't see the point then I can't really help you.

Scott Thornton probably goes by the same cliches as everybody else. The Wings are old, soft, Europeans. I'm sure he think he can take advantage of the Wings. In fact, probably the whole Anaheim team feels that way.

Oh well. Let them think that. They won't be when we beat them!

he or the team for that matter doesnt need any instructions because the ducks have played this way from the 1st game of the season and RC expects this kind of play from thorton.

also wouldnt you take a tradeoff of a 4th liner for a top pairing Dman?

also it takes 2 to tango

they both dropped there gloves so no cheapness or unfair acts happened

seems like a pointless thread to me

no offense

;)

Well, yeah, duh. Of course i'd take that trade off if I was the Ducks. That was sort of the whole friggin point to begin with. Jesus, you can lead a horse to water......

Anyway, I don't think it was cheap at all nor did I ever say so. What I said was I think part of the Ducks plan is explicitly to try and drop the gloves and get into a situation just like the one we're discussing. Trading a 4th liner for a top 4 dman.

By the way, Thornton threw his gloves off first. He intended to fight the entire time while Markov was like, WTF, this guy is gonna fight, oh well...... I wouldn't say its dirty but I thought Thornton could've gotten an instigator.

Personally, I like that Markov stood up to him but I'd rather he not to be truthful. The last thing we need is Markov going down with a broken hand or separated shoulder or being lost for 5 more minutes just to defend himself against a fairly useless player like Thornton or May.

IMO, Wings should avoid dropping the gloves. Ducks seem to thrive off of getting into fights and lets be honest, unless its Pronger or Getzlaf mixing it up, there aren't too many other Ducks who would actually fight that would be worth it for us to take off the ice for 5 minutes. Maybe Beauchemin.

Maybe Beauchemin.

definitely Beauchemin IMHO. media overblown his bad luck in deflecting the pucks

to the net for both goals, but if they actually DID watch the game, they could see

that Beauchemin was the guy who contained Homer. and with good luck. now

with Wings attack relying so much on Homer, Beauchemin presence can be

crucial to this series from Ducks perspective. then again... if we pursued him

into a fight (highly doubtful), I'm 100% sure he'll get away or even turtle. for the

same reason our D-men will have to turtle

:rotflmao:

The wings should avoid dropping their gloves because most would get the snot beat out of them.

I think Dom and Bertuzzi might be the only exceptions anymore.

Wow. I never really thought of that at all. Good call, Gordie.

Of course the Ducks are going to go after our already depleted D-men. It's not gonna work though..I'll tell ya that much.

If guys like Thornton, and May are going to continually go after our guys and think they can get away with it..then they have another thing coming.
