yah i was about to say, those numbers are incredibly unrealistic.

Bertuzzi - $2-3 mill

Smyth - $5.5 mill (cheapest)

Schneider - $3.25 mill (cheapest)

Markov - $3 mill (cheapest)

There's some realistic numbers lol

There is no way we sign Smyth and Bertuzzi...wings want Todd but others will offer more let them

Smyth turned down $5.5per for 5 years from Edmonton..he's 31/32 and has a lot of mileage on that body

Bertuzzi's a gamble health wise and would want to sign a multi-year contract

Markov is worth $3, he will get it somewhere else

Schneider will depend on how much he wants...I see this as his last chance at big money

and i can't see him signing cheap...look at what dmen are being offered this year..there aren't many

dmen available and everyone wants and needs at least one.

everyone still wants a power forward with a bad back!!! amazing gamble

Ilike Smyth but 5 years is too long

well markov i wouldn't mind...hasek i wouldnt either cuz hes a short term solution. i guess it's would u give up dats for luongo. i'd say yes. the best goalie in the world, the hardest spot to fill for a player with massive talent, and will be solid for years to come, but could be more easier replaced.

you give me brodeur or giggy and i will beat luongo

Exactly.

Huge difference between the two. Luongo uses talent to win games. Giguere uses his large frame and even larger pads to win games. That is a huge difference, and if the league ever cracked down on Giguere, or he actually got in shape, he'd be exposed for the mediocre goaltender that he is.

edmonton never offered smyth $5.5 mill per year...where ever u got ur info from or whoever u got it from is wrong. they offered him just under 5 million.

Thought he was offered $5 million for 5 years?

Me thinks Smyth wanted out of Edmonton.

something like that...they were apart by $200, 000 and neither side would budge. pretty sad. i wouldn't say he wanted out, but if he REALLY wanted to stay he would have gave up the extra 200k.

I would love it if we got Smyth, we don't really need Bertuzzi because with Smyth and Holmstrom running lines one and two, being the guys in front of the net that they are. The cup would be back this up coming season. I also think that Bertuzzi needs to prove himself again, so give him a smaller contract with bonuses for doing things right! Hopefully no one has said this stuff yet cause i didnt really look at all the things said about smyth...

Its probably not going to happen. it would be nice but with the money that Hartnell got Smyth is going to be getting much more than I thought he would. If teams wanna be stupid they can be my guest. Bertuzzi seems more likely because he won't cost nearly as much. If they sign him there will be all kinds of bonuses in his contract.

Smyth doesn't care that much about money as some of these other guys do. If he did, he would have already accepted either the 7-year or 10-year contracts that the Islanders threw his way. There was a lot of money involved in those also (can't remember specifics, but I do know it was a pretty high amount).

Let's not forget the re-signing Bert would not only cost us his salary, but also a first round pick. IMO, that is just too much to give up. I like what he brings, but I just think tht first round pick could be put to better use.

As for singing Smyth, I'd LOVE it. He brings a lot of what the Wings lost when Stevie called it quits. Players like him don't come around very often. I think Kenny is racking his brain to find a way to make it work.

However, given the fact that the Wings have about $34 tied up, and still need a top 4 dman, a starting goalie, and 2 top 4 forwards, even if the cap gets raised to $52, it would be quite the stretch to fit in Smyth at anything more than $4 per.

And remember Hank is due for a new contract. I'd take Hank over Smyth any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

True but after 09 is when the trouble would come in. If they signed a big name like Smyth to a 5-6 mil deal, and he's not going to take just a 2 year deal most likely, and already had Dats at 6.7 and then Hank would probably be getting about the same thats a lot of money tied up in 3 guys. Thats what people forget, not saying you did, but you have to plan for the future with a cap now.

E.J. Hradek has again listed the Wings as his favorite to get Smyth. I haven't seen anyone other than him print this, so I'd still consider it a longshot.

After 10-plus seasons as a local hero in Edmonton, the popular winger was sent to the Islanders at the trade deadline. The Isles were thrilled to get the crease-crashing vet, who scored 36 goals in each of the past two seasons. But Smyth, 31, wanted $5.5 million in his failed talks with Edmonton, and there will be as many as 10 teams, Detroit chief among them, willing to pay a lot more to land this no-nonsense, fiery leader.

Personally, I'm all for it. I think Smyth would fit in perfectly with the Wings system. I think he would instantly make the Wings far and away the best team in the NHL, assuming they also bring back either Schneider or Markov.

I realize it would make signing Z more difficult, but you have to take your shot a some point, and the Wings have a great window of opportunity now.

Edit: Sorry forgot link

I agree the Wings are right there and kinda need to see what they can do to make that extra push this coming year. Eventually they will take a little step backwards when Lidstrom retires and they hand the starting goalie job over to Howard. There's no getting around it. Not saying they are going to be bad but they should try to win it now without hurting their future if they can. I think he would be great here but it'll be tough imo.

Here is something to chew on.

Datsyuk, and Lidstrom eat up more than $14 in cap, throw in the likely signing of Matty say for $3, that's $17.

Now here is where it gets intersting. Within 2 years, Hank will get a new deal, from the Wings or someone else. He will get $6 at least. Figure on Nick hanging around for a few more years, even at a 'hometown discount' he could easily get $6. In two years, we will need a starting goaltender. Howard is a FA next in 08, so if he is the guy he could be fairly reasonable. Liv is a RFA this year, he actually is signed in Sweden. Getting him over here to start for the Wings could also be at a reasonable price. Let's just go with $2 per.

That leaves the Wings with about $22 tied up in 4 guys. Consider Homer, and Kronwall, that is another $5.25 taking the cap up to $27.25 or so on 6 guys.

My point? The Wings just don't have the long-term cap space to sign anyone big this offseason. Now if the cap continues to rise, the cap space will as well. But are you willing to risk losing Hank because the cap kept status quo for a few years? Or even went down?

Hank will be with this team for years to come as long as Kenny doesn't make any foolish moves, which I'm sure he won't.
