Who owns this town? Wings or Pistons?

I don't want to bring it up really, but everywhere I turn, I run into stories about Detroit's poor economy right now. There was even a big story in the USA Today the other day saying that people in frickin' Grosse Pointe are suffering. The city's lost one and a half million people since he 50s. A third of the people left are below the poverty line.... And you expect 20,000 people to pay huge prices for a hockey game every day in the playoffs? Especially with the Pistons and Tigers doing well at the same time.

I'd rather not pit the teams against each other. I just want all of the Detroit teams to do well.

And as far as the Minneapolis vs. Detroit argument, I've lived in both cities, and I think people in Minnesota care more about hockey and play more hockey than people in Michigan. If the North Stars had the team the Wings had through the 90s, they'd never have been able to move.

Every city is a fair-weather town to some extent. When there's a garbage product on the ice/field/court/diamond, nobody's going to get too excited. The Wings sucked when I was a little kid, but the Detroit area and the Windsor area still produced a bunch of great players at the time. There's a hell of a lot of rinks there. People know about the sport. I have no problem with Detroit being "Hockeytown, USA"....

Even in Canadian cities as well. The Calgary Flames are a perfect example. They could not fill their area with their crappy team in the late 90’s and the owner was thinking about moving the team. Some Flames fans deny this and make up some lame excuse blaming the Red Wings for the reason due to the Wings having a high salary. But it’s the Flames fans fault for not supporting their team and putting money in their owners pockets so he can go out and make the team salary high.

As for who owns this town, I belive the Wings still own it. The radio might not give all the attention on the Red Wings but I know a lot of people in the Metro Detroit area that still talk more about the Red Wings then the Pistons.

I think the problem with the radio not talking about the Red Wings was due to the lockout. All the attention got focused on the Pistons as they were making a run and I think they won the championship that year.

I live in the Lansing area whos local sports would rather cover MSU womens volley ball rather than mention the Red Wings, with the exception, of course of how violent hockey is when Pronger cheap shots Holmstrom. Apparently that was news worthy, but not a clip from a play off game. Like an earlier poster stated, "Hockey owns me" I love the sport and I don't personally think it is important who "owns Detroit" Each sport has it's own following. I for one don't like basketball. I admittedly jumped on the Tigers band wagon last year but hadn't watched a game prior to that since their strike. As far as the Lions" I was born in 58 and haven't seen them win a championship in my lifetime but you can bet, and the same goes for the Wings, I'll be watching every single game possible and rooting for the home team whether they have a winning season or losing season because that's what real fans do. Basically, all I'm saying is to pick your sport/team and support them through good and bad and it won't matter who owns the city.
