Yzerman on "Behind The Mask" last night

Did anyone else see this last night, they talked mostly about the World Championships and then the moron I forget his name, with the comb-over ask Steve a dumb question like "Since you being gone, don't hate me for asking but are the Red Wings better off without Steve Yzerman, and are they better than last year?"

What a tool, Yzerman handled this question gracefully and moved on.

what did you guys think if you seen the interview??

oh and was it just me or did he look awkwardly cramped inbetween "comb-over" and Kelley Hrudey?

I saw that, what a dumb question to ask. Yzerman looked really uncomfortable when the question was posed.

The interviewers' name is Scott Oake.

He said he felt the Wings were probably better off without his 41-year-old, broken-down body but to imply his presence was detrimental to the team is just ludicrous. He said he retired because he couldn't help the team anymore and he was finding it increasingly difficult to stay healthy.

Here's the link to the video clip of the interview - make sure you click "Behind the Mask" for May 17th. :) - Behind the Mask

He did look kind of crammed in there between Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey...lol

Stevie is awesome, he handles interviews so good, and you know he couldn't have been prepared for a question like that, he was all comfortable answering the world championship questions then out of nowhere the "BOMB" gets dropped and he handled it well. I hope he is behind the Wings bench someday.

In Scott Oake's defence to the question posed.. he did say it was from the ESPN article that was written (posted somewhere on this board) and that he himself was an "ass" for asking the question prior to asking. SO props to Scott Oake for bringing it up.. I for one really wanted to hear Stevie's view on this artcile. And of course the answer was pure class.. STEVIE RULES!

Ehmm, the question was a "me too" from the Burnside piece. Please see:

http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=43303

Don't get me wrong, I was burning fire when Eejit asked him that last night, and it was THE first thing that I thought about when I woke this morning-- not last night's loss, not the implications of same. I posted this below, without benefit of coffee:

"HNIC interviewed Stevie after the 2nd period last night. After some chitchat about Team CAN, Stevie was asked,"Are the Wings better off this year for not having Stevie Yzerman in the locker room?" Stevie fired back, "You mean, are the Wings better off for not having the 41-YEAR-OLD Stevie Yzerman in the locker room?" and with his usual class, went on to calmly discuss it-- none of which I could hear because my ears were slowly filling with blood. I couldn't believe the rudeness and insensitivity of the question, but *shrug* it didn't seem to bother Stevie at all, so I suppose I'm making too much of it. I'm trying to find a clip or article about the interview, but no luck thus far.

On a happier note, Stevie looked brilliant-- happy and relaxed, so youthful and vital that I wanted, and badly, to slap a pair of skates on him and drag him out to Cali. I'm pretty sure there's a piainting of him in some lost, forgotten storage room at the Joe that's doing his aging for him (along with portaits of Cheli and Dom)."

ROTFLMAO!!! Although, there may be some truth to that...Stevie does look younger since he retired. Hmmm....

You're quite welcome... :)

I love Stevie, but c'mon, don't think he gets offended at that question. It's an obvious one, and he's smart enough to know the answer already. He played a long, storied career, and now it's over. He accepts that. In fact, he probably played a couple years more than he should have, and he probably knows that as well. He's the reason a lot of the younger guys on the team are as good as they are now, anyway, and he's still a part of the team and always will be.

They asked him if they were a better team without the 41 year old, injured Steve Yzerman. His response was something like well they're not necessarily better, but with him out, it gives more opportunity for guys like Filppula, Kopecky, and Hudler. He said with that youth in the line up, we are a stronger, healthier team.

WTF??? I had to read your reply two times to get a general understanding that you were attacking the question and not Steve Y. Just drop the "but c'mon" and all will be fine. I hope you have better intercommunication face to face.

GO Wings!!!

What is it that Steve Yzerman do that keeps him looking like 21 years old? The guy doesn't look over 30 let alone 40!!

People say he looks alot like Johnny Depp, do you believe that Depp is going to be turning 44?
