Detroit Newspapers

During 2003 playoffs, I got in the habit of reading each of these newspapers. I think Mitch Albom was writing most of the hockey news for the Free Press back then and now he's doing basketball it seems. Maybe my bad memory though.

In reading each of the online editions though, it seems that the News gives a more balanced approach to the series while the Press is always out to start some type of a riot.

In Sunday's edition, there is a very good editorial in the News about the Ducks being the new "dumb" team in sports backed up with lots of hockey history to support why. Wouldn't go so far as to say "sports", but would agree "hockey" by how they're playing now, and yes, I'm a Ducks fan. The News prints an article about Pronger opening his mouth on Friday and then shutting it on Saturday, so the local fan knows about what he said about officiating, his side of story regarding suspension, etc.

As for the Press, except for the entertaining story about the Swedes, the other articles are written to seemingly encite the Wings fans even more regarding Pronger. Like you need more reasons to dislike him and get pumped up to boo him at the game?

Just curious what you locals think about the sports sections in each of these papers. If I lived there, I would get the Detroit News any day.

I don't really read the local stuff, they tend to be archaic in their reporting and i can't stand Mitch the *****'s radio show, so i don't read anything he writes either. The man is a hack on the radio. I have major political disagreements with the man, but he is so inconsistent with his statements and bought into a story that a documented liar was spouting on his show. For these reasons i find it hard to believe he'd get anything right or pose any serious thoughts about anything sports related.

As for newspapers in general, i don't actively seek them out, but if an article pops up on Yahoo's hockey news roster i'll usually read it.

TSN is the best for Hockey News

Wow, pretty sad commentary for Detroit hockey. We're dying for more hockey coverage in our local newspapers; you get it and it's not worthwhile to you anyway.

Thanks for the input and at least I know that what they write really isn't valued by the masses probably anyway.

It's no reflection on Detroit hockey - it's a sad commentary on who they choose to write about it.

I am a fan of John Niyo and Ted Kulfan, and I like mlive a lot for real local stuff. As a far-flung Wings' fan in Texas, there isn't much else for us. I think they are truthful and accurate to a degree, but all media are biased and fickle when you come right down to it. As for local reporting being a reflection on the hockey club in Detroit. The players don't write the articles or control what is printed. Now, as for the PR department and what they let out and say, that's different -- but still not a reflection on the club or players.

What the local press is saying about Pronger isn't much different than what the televised media is saying. I suspect Wings fans can figure him out without reading the Detroit press. Personally, I disliked him long before he quacked like a Duck... so, no surprise here that he intends to continue to be a goon and blame it on the laws of physics. Einstein's Laws have nothing to do with dirty hockey, last time I checked, Prissy.

Has anyone figured out what the hell Helene St James or whatever her name is doing writing hockey stories in the Freep? She consistently gets her facts wrong and seems to have a hard time figuring out this game called hockey.

Detroit has better hockey coverage than pretty much any other American city, so I don't know why you guys are freaking out. I read both papers (as well as TSN, the wires, Slam, S.I., Windsor Star, ESPN, etc.), and I"ve got to say, the Freep's still doing a pretty good job covering the Wings while the Snooze's coverage has just been embarassing at times. They're missing stories, getting facts wrong, letting typos slip through, writing and editing horribly and getting their analysis totally wrong. I like that one columnist, Wojnoski's work a bit, but Albom kills him. And as far as the beat writers, St. James does a pretty good job, in my opinion.

Even with all my complaints about the News, though, I'd still take their coverage of the NHL over almost anybody else's lately. I don't know how much of it makes the print edition of the paper out there, since I don't live in Detroit, but I know it's got to be better than you'd find in most of the country. I've lived in about ten different cities, and you'd be shocked at how little hockey is reported in most places. It's basically treated like a joke.

Just because its there in "quantity" doesn't mean its there in "quality"

IMO, the biggest gripe about the local papers here is that there's no "depth" coverage... Most of the stuff in the News and Freep is just recycled company-line material spoon-fed from the Wings' front office, no (or not enough) deep-digging behind the scenes, etc..

In terms of getting that in-depth coverage, I prefer mLive.

It's not uncommon for signings and other team-related happenings to get reported here first only to see it pop up in the newspapers the next day or so.

This isn't '97 or 98 when the Pistons and the Tigers were garbage. The Red Wings were the biggest team in Motown back then. Now, baseball has been rejuvenated in Detroit and the Pistons are in the midst of a five year dynasty. While Detroit is a hockey town and one of the original 6 cities, hockey has taken a backseat to the three other major sports. Local coverage is more of a reflection of the nation's attitude toward professional hockey these days. Pretty apathetic. Down here in Charlotte, NC people could care less about hockey. Even last year when the Canes won the cup, no one paid attention. Everyone was waiting for the next NASCAR race. This is just the state of affairs in hockey. Even NBC transfers its broadcast of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals to Versus so that it doesn't interrupt the pre-race garbage events of the Preakness. If you want good Red Wings coverage listen to WXYT or WDFN where the conversation is balanced between the Pistons and the Wings.

wow... ouch. Detroiters are harsh! I LIKE the News and the Freep. I read them everyday during the NHL. Sure, they are biased, but they are the home team players. I am always disappointed to go to other newspapers to see their coverage and it is next to nil. We should be glad we have what we have.
