I remember reading somewhere about the Cap going up 3.5 mill. But I don't remember when it was suppose to be enforced. Im sure hoping its this upcoming season, cause we all know that the Red Wings will use 95% of their cap room. So as long as the cap goes up, thats more money for us to get even better. Does anyone know anything about it?

Per Gary Bettman on HNIC SCF pre-game when pressed HARD by Ron on this subject: "doubletalk, yadayada, why don't we talk about these two wonderful teams about to play? more doubletalk, some bs, "We're still working things out with the new system" some MORE bs, yadayada, "The players are all fine with it" blah ad infinitum..."

I hate that man (how original of me!! /sarcasm off). He's the hockey equivalent of Donald Trump-- all blow, no hard.

There are 3 people on this planet who should give a s*** about what the salary cap number is.

1 - NHL player

2 - agent for NHL player

3 - wife of NHL player

If there is some fuzzy math out there that shows a certain cap number enhances the Detroit Red Wings' chances......I am more than willing to listen.

No one is saying its going to enhance the Wings chances. Just simply that we are definitely a team that will use almost all of our cap space. Not every other team can. The more the cap goes up, the better for higher-teered teams that are willing to spend more money. And the Detroit Red Wings are certainly one of those teams.

I'm still listening. So there are teams that are gonna spend less than they're allowed?

It's all too deep and yet oddly, over this poster's pretty lil haid, but evidently, yes.

Per Bettman tonight: "The cap is just a GUIDELINE, obviously, some teams won't be able to spend to the cap *cough*revenuesharing*cough*, but it's a lot better than the days of one team spending $20 mil and another spending $80."

Maclean: But Buffalo Sabres (Bettman interrupts--"Then MAYBE THEY SHOULD RAISE THEIR TICKET PRICES."

OTT SCORES!! Whoo hoo (sorry for going OT).

There is a reason he have a salary cap MAX and a salary cap minimum, because there are teams that from year to year will do just that, spend the minimum as possible. While we have Mike Illitch.

Exactly.

To be honest, I'm not sure it really makes as much of difference as I thought. The sources I am looking at may not be 100% accurate, but for the 06/07 season, the vast majority of the team payrolls were in the $38-39 million range (including Detroit - though I thought they were closer to the cap, which leads me to question the accuracy).

In fact, only 4 teams in the entire league were under $37 million:

- EDM - $36.2 million

- STL - $35.6 million

- PIT - $27.8 million

- WSH - $26.9 million

With PIT and WSH, you know those numbers will be going up dramatically when guys like Ovechkin and Crosby get new contracts.

Bettman needs to have the new SalaryCap ok'd by Lou Lamoriello first before it's set. Then he has to ask Lou by how much he wants to exceed it. Then and only then will the new number be announced.

From what I've understood, the cap for the 07/08 season will be between $48-50 million.

This will greatly help offset Dats' raise, and if the cap grows another couple million the following season as well, the Wings will be in great shape to get Z locked up to a long term contract during the 08/09 season.

I've heard $47-48 million, but obviously nothing is official or Bettman would have had no problem telling MacLean.

Bettman mentions 48 or 49 at the end of this article:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=209177&hubname=nhl

I think Bettman said he expects revenues to increase by 6.5-7%, but I don't think he mentioned anything about the cap, I think the cap numbers were mentioned by the person writing the article, though, I'm not sure how the math works. $44 million +7% = $47 million.
