NHL Dissed

haha just now on during the game at the end of the 2nd quarter the time clock and shot clock froze and then the score board was showing 0 - 0 3rd Period. The courtside announcer then said this score might be right for the Anaheim vs Ottawa final. NHL gets some publicity but gets dissed lol

Good yet Bad.

Now they have to use Stopwatches and Airhorns :) haha

I don't see what the diss was. The NHL is low scoring, particularly in comparison to basketball, and the Finals games have been having scores that low mostly.

 Then they realize that an NHL game can't end in 0-0 Tie... Thus regaining the NBA is dumb label. :P

I would say its a diss. Im sure what they were implying is that the NHL is low-scoring and thus not very exiting to watch in comparison to their painfully repetitive spory.

How is them simply knowing who is playing in the finals a compliment? can we quit selling ourselves short here people?? If we dont take ourselves seriously, how can we expect the rest of the sporting world to?

Exactly what I was thinking. The whole NEW NHL is based around having more goals so people watch it cause it's more exciting and they just put that low scoring sport label on the NHL again. Even though tonight ended up being 5-3.:)

Nobody will ever take the NHL seriously. Bettman is trying to make it something it's not.

Note that in 1994, when the Rags won the Cup, the NHL was really popular. Even more than the NBA. Then, two labor dispuits later, and nobody really cares about it anymore. We're not selling ourselves short, we're speaking the truth. Most people, who aren't hockey fans, really don't know anything about the sport.

yup, throw in poor marketing, poor network deal, and it hurts even more. I don't really blame Bettman as much as his staff.

Nope, he's the CEO. He's the one making the big bucks, he's the team leader: ultimately, it's his responsibility.

As Donald Trump (another tool, albeit one with some marketing skills) would say, "YOU'RE FIRED."

Geeze I hate when people try to coin the saying "You're fired" to Donald trump. He was not the first to make that saying.

I believe it was a little diss to the NHL but they did at least know which teams were in the finals.

I recently got my friend into hockey and he made an interesting point. He says he didn't watch hockey before primarily because never had a history in it as a kid. People don't care about the game because no one knows anything about it. No one has played it. He also said watching players make incredible moves wasn't very exciting because he had never played and couldn't gauge the difficulty of what they were doing.

I think if the NHL wants to become more popular, it should start by trying to make the game more accessible to the youth. It's difficult with all the equipment to get kids started when basketball only requires a ball and a hoop. Bettman nor anyone else has a quick fix to this problem. It's going to take a lot of time and effort to establish the game to the US market.

not with that kind of attitude. Its called a self-fulfilling prophecy. If hockeys biggest fans are going around telling everyone that no one will ever take the sport seriously.......then it will become the truth. Your latter example as well proves just how possible it is for the table to turn.

and that is so very true. Its a common trend that hockey is only available to more affluent households because of the large costs that come with the sport. Thankfully more and more rinks are being opened everywhere and one can only hope that the competition to attract skaters will lower ice costs as well as spark more interest so that we can accumulate fans in all economic classes.

Hockey is an expensive sport--not olnly the equipment but also the ice time. We're lucky in our town that there are scholarships that pay up to 1/2 the ice fees plus we have equipment rental.

I don't really care that most American sports fans aren't big on hockey. Pandering to non-traditional hockey fans for the last 10-15 years has helped to ruin the league. Let's just keep to ourselves.
