Why not Vegas as an NHL destination?

I watched a cnn report which talked about the growth of las vegas which showed that when they build schools and hospitals they are already outdated. two the mayor as part of his campaign promised to lure an nhl team to las vegas at any cost which includes building an arena 3. it is an untapped market full of tranplants from the east and northeast

4.The gambling issue we all know that people see it as a problem but we all know that you can gamble from your own computer

It is something that could be a huge success or a huge disappointment....

Season tickets could be a problem, you would need corporations to pick up a lot of those and who knows if there would be much interest. If it was owned by Jerry Bruckheimer, however, he may have the power to sell it.

But then there is always the possibility that if it works out great, another major sports league team would move in and people would forget about the NHL.....

I am still not sure what to think of the matter, there's so many variables involved.... Then NHL better do their research.....

The NHL already has pressing problems without expanding again. Non-coincidentally, most of the teams in terrible straits are recent expansion teams.

Also, I don't think one could possibly find a place where people care less about hockey than in Vegas.

Why isn't a place like Salt Lake City isn't being considered as a possible move for a team. I'm not trying to say that it is the ultimate place to have a new franchise, but seems like an idea worth at least looking further into the pros/cons in.

Because it would be one of the five smallest markets in the league. Not saying it couldn't work, but they are going to explore places like Houston (one of the largest markets in the country) and Las Vegas (fastest growing) as well as Kansas City (decent size, and immediate move-in!) ahead of Salt Lake City.

theres a point there, even if i don't want a team in any of the three citys

I am mixed on the Vegas issue. As someone pointed out there are a lot of northern transplants in Vegas, my sister and her friends being some. Last spring I was out there, and I don't know if any of you know, but there is an ECHL team that skates out of the Orlean's. Now granted it was a playoff game, but they drew a decent sized crowd (by Michigan standards) for a Jr. A hockey game.

Just some food for thought

The league has not adopted the gambling side of sports as much as say Football, so I think that is partly why it will take a lot to get a team into Vegas.

I say worry about the failing teams that we wasted optimistic time on that are still struggling to bring fans in.

Fix whats broken before you go making the mess worse.

With that said, I wouldn't mind seeing a failing team move to Las Vegas, but to expand the league there in the state that its in is a stupid move.

I'm currently of the opinion that if a team is going to move it should be away from an area where winter and hockey fans barely exist and back to areas where both naturally occur... and I'm a Coyotes fan.

Agreed--search the northwestern USA or Canada.

You dont think the Casinos would pick up some tickets and offer them as a package to stay at there hotel and not some place else? I would go there to watch the Wings play who ever and if I get free tickets that would be even better.

I am not suggesting expansion more moving a team there

If Vegas had a team it would only be fitting for Jeremy Roenick to be their inaugural captain.

If there was a team that could move to Vegas, I think it's a great idea. That place is full of people from traditional hockey markets that have relocated. Two of my friends moved there about 3 years ago and the place has exploded. It would be cool for the NHL to get into a market and blaze the trail for the other sports to make their way to Sin City.

Plus then I could move there someday and have a 2nd favorite NHL team... the Blue Jackets are cuttin' it here in Columbus for me.

If you're a Coyotes fan, you SHOULD know that Phoenix has supported the Coyotes attendance-wise better than Winnipeg ever hoped to. Dallas has a team that sells out every game because Minnesota barely filled half the arena. Carolina has a good team that gets decent fan support because Hartford failed miserably at just that.

Chicago and Boston are Original Six teams in good northern hockey markets that get terrible attendance. Tampa Bay, Dallas, and San Jose are relatively recent southern teams that get among the best support in the league.

The other issue with a team in Vegas is who would the fans be? I'm sure there are a few die-hard transplants that live in the area, but with the main business being tourism, wouldn't that make for some of the type of games Gretzky whines about in Phoenix? Games where fans of the opposing team dwarf the number of home team fans?

Honestly, I don't think there will be a pro sports team in Las Vegas for many years to come. Im in favor of it. I just don't think its gonna happen for awhile.
