eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted June 22, 2007 Why would anyone even consider Souray? Schneider is better AND cheaper than Souray. By the time Souray is better than Schneider, one or both of Kindl and Kronwall will be ready to step in and excel. So age is not a consideration since we have guys who will be ready when Schneider drops off.
high_stick69 7 Report post Posted June 22, 2007 no, they likely won't. The Wings were very close to winning the cup. They were maybe one guy, an unlucky bounce, or a little experience for some of the younger guys away from the cup. Maybe Kenny adds a depth player to fill the spots vacated by Calder and Lang. AND maybe you can get someone who wants to win for a lower number than they would get going to play for Phoenix, Columbus, or some other celler dweller desperate for talent. I think Kenny will make a play, and a good play. If we don't get one of the "big 3," no big deal. The wings are in great shape and will definitely be a contender next season. How many other teams can make that claim?

StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted June 22, 2007 QFT AMEN BROTHER!!!!! s*** I will do you one better, they were one pp goal away from the cup!!! 5 on 3 early in the third of game 4 with the game tied at 3 would have been huge. Or one PP in game 5. It sucks they were that close. And I do believe Schneider was the one guy. He would have helped on the PP but depth wise would have been even more helpful in my mind. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 22, 2007 If the Wings wanted to kill several birds with one stone in having offense, size, youth, and grit on the blueline, theyd forget about Schneider and swing a trade for Pitkanen while Joni's stock is relatively low. Hes 23 years old, 6'3, and regardless of the fact that he had a subpar year (who didnt with the Flyers?), still put up 40+ points. We all know what playing alongside Lidstrom can do for a guys game, for his confidence, and with the mentoring of Chelios in combination with Babcocks skills with younger players, it wouldnt be a bad deal at all. Instead of signing two guys to cover the offensive and physical components on the backend, Pitkanen could do it for 2M, being a UFA in 08. It would likely cost us Kindl and a high pick, which is pricey, but the guy plays the type of game where he could thrive in Detroit. That would also open up the door for Detroit to sign Smyth. So fricken close...this was definitely a missed opportunity. That said, I don't think it's necessarily fair to say that with Schneider we win that series. He would've helped for sure, but the Ducks were also missing a 25 goal, 65ish point guy in that cherry-picker Kunitz and they fought through Pronger's brain farts and won without him both times he was suspended. Losing Schneids hurt our PP, but they had guys out too.... Without Datsyuk taking that penalty (whether it was a good call or not is another debate), Detroit wins the Cup. And it's a bummer..... Kronwall really needs to get it together this season. He's a key to the future...can't have a guy making that much money for that long of a time period playing like he did last year (or continuing to get hurt). I still wish we had dangled him to try and get JMFJ when the Canes gave him away for 10 cents on the dollar. -Tim Edited June 22, 2007 by Packer487

You have twice as many forwards. Losing Schneider is akin to Anaheim losing the offensive talents of Niedermayer (not necessarily his defensive instincts since Nieds is more advanced in that regard), but moreover, the big thing was not just losing Schneider, but losing all but one of our offensive Dmen. Detroit had a very well-balanced defensive core, essentially 3 defensive defenseman (chelios, lebda, markov) and 3 offensive defenseman (Lidstrom, Schneider, Kronwall). Unfortunately for Detroit however, their injuries werent as balanced. Mathieu Schneider is an integral part to why we couldnt beat Anaheim, but you really have to look at the bigger picture. Detroit played 1/2 of the playoffs with 5 defensive defenseman and 1 offensive defenseman - Lidstrom of course. That greatly reduced Detroits options on the point. Whereas they couldve gone with Lidstrom/Schneider on the 1st unit and Schneider/Kronwall on the 2nd unit, they were deduced to Lebda/Chelios on the 2nd unit. You dont even have to do your homework to know that neither Chelios nor Lebda have a threatening shot which allowed Anaheim to focus on covering the real offensive threats down low (Dats, Hank, Homer, etc) and leave Lebda, Chelios, and even Sammy to take ill-timed and/or poorly aimed shots at the net as much as they liked. Kronwall was missed as well. As much as he wasnt the offensive stud we hoped hed be this season, you have to realize the difference between Kronwall taking a shot/playing the point and Chelios and Lebda doing the same. In this case, its not so much that Kronwall and Schneider were such a huge loss, but that the defenseman who were taking their place were on the opposite end of the spectrum where offense was the farthest from their forte. Not to mention, Sammy is known for his wrister, not his slapper and definitely not his passing. Kronwall on the other hand, isnt great with the wrister, has a decent slapper, but more importantly is a good passer. Lidstrom and Kronwall setting up one another is an improvement not only over not having Schneider, but an improvement over Sammy, Chelios, and Lebda on the PP. Pucker 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2007 (edited) Boy, trades are tough. Ask yourself, (in a new NHL) can I bring in BIG dollar talent? Can I make money when I can't sell out playoff games? Should I trade off my fan favorites to get in new faces and names? Da Wings made it to the semi's this year(perhaps a good Zets, and maybe a heathy Bert?), further than most had thought they would go (including myself). If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Minor tweaks are needed. Yea, I would like to see the wings spend $20m this year on players, but they can't. IMO, Babs needs a LONG term contract. I think he did a lot with a little. superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted June 23, 2007 Smyth or Kozlov. I would go with the latter due to it being far more realistic.
