Tomas Vokoun Traded to Florida Panthers

1. Your team has traded away its top defenseman and captain, one of its best young power forward-type players and your #1 goaltender. No team in the NHL is currently shedding as much of its core talent as Nashville.

2. Who is being added to make the team better? Nobody is the correct answer. Again, only speculation that they might pick up somebody.

we traded away RIGHTS to Timonen and Hartnell. It was obvious that they were going to get ridiculous offers that wouldn't be matched anyway. So we got a first round pick from it. Vokoun has not been healthy the last two seasons, that's how Mason got his chance to shine anyway, and many felt that Mason outplayed Vokoun last season. We have a few holes to fill, and moving Vokoun's salary lets us fill in a decent 3rd line and get some veteran presence on the blueline.

as for core talent... Arnott, Dumont, Radulov, Legwand, Erat, Sullivan, Weber and Mason. not bad

We're not adding anybody to make the team better? Just speculation?... actually we MUST sign someone. We have to meet the cap minimum after all.

I think Mason is the Manny Legace of Nashville. He enjoyed the benefits of being the backup. Coming in to save the day without the expectations that come with starting.

He seems like a decent goaltender, but I'd be pretty surprised if he turned out to be as good as Vokoun.

Not to say it doesn't happen (though Hasek is the only one I can think of offhand), but he's a 31 yr old goaltender who has never had a starting job in the NHL. There's probably a reason for that.

And overall Legionaire, I can't tell if you've really got the inside track on what's happening with the Predators, or if you're just a loyal fan who's deeply in denial.

time will tell.

One thing everyone keeps forgetting is the fact that the Preds are about 8m under the expected cap MINIMUM. Meaning they MUST spend at least that much more. They need five or six forwards, three defensemen, and a goalie. Figure 750k for the goalie and 2.25m for the defensemen. That leaves 5m that MUST be spent on five forwards just to meet the minimum. Figure four of those guys are 3rd-4th line types who cost a total of 2m. That leaves 3m MINIMUM to spend on a top six forward like Kariya. If they want to retain both Kariya and Forsberg, they can more than afford to. Figure Forsberg and Kariya (or replacements) cost about 8m combined, that puts them only about 4.5m over the cap floor with Kariya, Arnott, Forsberg, Dumont, Sullivan, Erat, Legwand, Radulov as their top 8 forwards. That's a pretty good group of forwards.

Vokoun, well lets see, the team has no third line, and onle 5 proven defensemen. But we have two goalies with stats that were dead even last year.

Im sorry bro, but theres nothing you can say to justify this move. I could care less about there stats being simalar. Vokoun is BY FAR the better netminder, and he is BY FAR the more reliable goalie, epsecially come playoff time. Mason is no Vokoun. They could have traded Chris Mason and actually got something decent back for him. But instead they let there "franchise" goaltender go. There is absolutely nothing you can say to make this look like a good move. If anyone thought the preds were going down hill after losing Timonen and Hartnell and soon Forsberg, just watch how fast they tumble down the mountain without Tomas Vokoun. Absolutely horrible move by the preds. Despite the fact of basically only having 2 lines, they should have definitely traded Mason, and then build from there. If you actually think this was a good move by the preds. Man you are in a dream world.

Legion, im not trying to stir you up and yes, I mentioned it was for their RIGHTS in my post b/c I knew you'd want that pointed out....and you did again anyway

Yes, its great that they got some picks for guys they likely could not re sign. But that doesn't make your club better now does it? Its a very simple picture to see (for me I suppose) but I look at a Nashville team that had good depth, 2 solid goalies and a great season last year and I see them get rid of those 3 big time players and only re sign Smithson????

I know they have to spend some cash but I doubt they're going to get players the equivalent of the 3 they just lost. Who will be the backup netminder? Somebody only Preds fans have heard of with likely no NHL experience? Who replaces Hartnell's tenacity and goal scoring on the wing? Who takes over the Captaincy and keeps this team from fracturing? Who guides the 5 young defenders you have on the blueline now?

You can make excuses all day long that they couldn't re sign those guys so dealing them was the right move. Which I agree it was the right move to get something instead of nothing. But there is still a bottom line and that is undeniable. Those great players are gone and right now nobody is on board to replace them. I don't count unproven prospects so let's not go there.

Somebody said don't count them out as a contender? Contender for what? They couldn't get out of the 1st round last year, their best year ever with Hartnell, Timmo and Vokoun and they're going to "contend" this year after likely being sold, selling off their good players and rolling 2 pretty good lines and 5 yound defenseman with an unproven backup goalie and a starter who has never been a true #1 in his life? Yeah, the only thing they'll contend for is the 7,8 spot in the playoffs.

Couldnt have said it better myself. And hell, they will be LUCKY to even contend for the 8th spot. If they even get the 7th seed I will be shocked.

I didn't forget. I know they have to spend more money to meet the minimum.

but by dumping Hartnell Timmonen and Vokoun they sure look like a team who's primary goal is saving money and maybe positioning themselves for the future, not improving the team for this season.

Everyone keeps dismissing the loss of Hartnell and Timmonen saying how they never could've afforded to keep both of them. Yet as you point out, they are in a position now where they need to spend money to meet the minimum required by that cap.

Seems to me like they had room to keep at least one of these guys. I just don't see how losing those three is a part of a sound strategy for building a better team (in the short term).

You guys got BACK the 1st round you sent them for forsberg. So lets see you sent a top deman and forward for Forsberg who may or may not be back. plus the guys in the oringinal deal. And of course, just like our guys never get inj, neither do yours.

Man... Nashville is going to suck so bad!!!!!!!!!! I can not wait to go see them get trashed by Detroit next year in a game at Nashville. I will have to buy like 10 tickets to bring my family to watch the beating... lol jk about that but man... Nashville is falling apart fast. Who is next to go? My money is Forsberg followed by Kariya. Good Job Nashville!!! You are letting your super elite cup contending team fall apart.

This is great we should be handed the Division title at this point. That guarantees us at least a third place in the post season.

Hell we would have won the division title even with a good Preds team.
