Why do people say we need a 2nd line center?

pav is making 6.7 per year , he shouldnt have to need zetterberg for him to perform

Maybe they didn't mean that Dats needs Z, could've been the other way around. Although, reading the post that clearly wasn't the intent either way, simply stating the two are a great duo and improve each others game. Nice try though.

People are saying we're looking at Yashin (yuck) to be our 2nd line centre.

Everyone in Detroit knows that Babs, Holland and Bowman love Zetterberg at centre. It's his natural position and everyone says he's better down the middle.

And yet we have all these so-called "hockey people" saying that we need a 2nd line centre, assuming that Zetts is a natural LW.

Sorry for complaining but I'm tired of having this issue brought up.

P.S. I hate the idea of Yashin on our squad. We just got rid of a big dumb lazy centre. Why would we want another one?

As we saw in the latter half of the season, having Datsyuk and Zetterberg on the same line means good things.

Yashin will never play for the Red Wings.

The Wings should use these lines:

Hudler/Zetterberg/Holmstrom

Filppula/Datsyuk/Bertuzzi

Cleary/Franzen/Grigorenko

Maltby/Draper/Kopecky

Any questions?

Personally, no issues. But I bet if you asked Babs, he'd have Hudler on the fourth line.

I'd rather they try and make two solid, separate lines with Dats and Z as centers.

Babcock always has the option to put the two back together with Homer.

Better that than have one great line with them together all year, only to split them up in the playoffs when opponents put their shut-down line against them.

They did great together up until the Duck and then he broke them up in game 3 and that worked too. I am fine either way. I could live with Flip at center and then trade deadline time, if thats not working, pick someone up if possible.

Any questions?

1. Why is Dats second line center? He puts up better (marginally) numbers, and is paid more, and has more offensive touch.

2. Wouldn't Cleary be a better choice for center on the 3rd line? He has actually played center on Detroit, and Franzen makes a fantastic winger (even though he played center for limited time in Sweden.)

3. Dont you know that Hudler the Hated won't make 1st line time? Flip, Franz or Grigs will get 1st or 2nd time way faster than Huds will.

4. Why cant hockey season start tonite? I am so tired of the offseason... (although I have been off my seat waiting for re-signs and july 1.)

Just playing devils advocate but their line suffered when they were on the road and always faced a defensive line. I thought they did a lot better in the Ducks series when they split them up.

I agree on the road in the PO they did much better apart (playwise not stat wise) because the other team had to decide which line to sick their top pairing on. Damn stupid last change rule!!!

I think as a whole most people did not see what some of saw out of flip, he is still relatively unkown and we dont know for SURE he can do the job, plus could it hurt getting another center of 2nd line quality and have three or four really good centers.

why not nylander as a second line center

datsyuk/zetteberg/homer

gregirenko/nylander/bertuzzi

franzen/flip/samuelson

cleary/draper/maltby

lidstrom/lilja

schneider/kronwall

lebda/chelios

So were Messier and Gretzky. But then they split them up and they became, arguably, the best 1-2 punch down the middle the NHL has ever seen.

The difference is that Zata and Datsyuk played together and played great, then were split up this season and SUCKED. When they were put back together, they started cleaning up again.

As such, I believe we've disproved the Messier-Gretzky theory here.

LOL.

I do believe the point is that they PRODUCE better together than when apart. Lidstrom makes $7.5m, but if he played for the Kings I do believe he wouldn't do nearly as well in the stats department.

Maybe because ummmmm Nylander isn't signed by the Wings?

Homer/Datsyuk/Flip (Flip played well with Dats when Zet was injured)

Sammy/Zets/Bert (Right handed left winger- no Shanny but at least he has a shot)

Franzen/Hudler/Grigorenko

Cleary/Draper/Malts

Lidstrom/Lilja

Kronwall/Quincey

Lebda/Chelios

Arguably we have 2 1st lines there and not a first and a second.

I am just using the guys that we have signed or expect to sign. Notice no Schneider, no Markov :(

We'll see how it shakes out.

Babs has said several times that he wants to split the Eurotwins up. At some point they will have to learn how to produce with other players.

I think it's just a matter of finding the right type of players to compliment their styles, or finding the right guys to play second line behind them, and still produce.

I like this better

Smyth - Datsyuk - Bertuzzi

Filppula - Zetterberg - Holmstrom

Cleary - Draper - Maltby

Franzen - Hudler - Grigorenko

People say the Wings need a 2nd line center because it's the cool and hip thing to do these days!

Seriously, as awesome as it is to see Zetterberg and Datsyuk together (keep 'em on the PP at least), I want them separate as much as possible during even strength play. I think they can both produce fine without each other on separate lines, and you want to spread your offensive talent around as many lines as possible I think.

Whenever the offense for the Wings just completely dries up, or one of the two guys needs a spark, pair them back together every now and then.

They weren't nearly as good on the road for most of the playoffs, when the opponent had last change and could match lines against them.
