apparently UFA Jason allison is coming back after a year off. Does anyone think hed be worth the potential low risk/high reward situation? hes been just under a point a game player for his whole career and even had 60 points in 66 games in his most recent stint with the leafs. Yes, i know about the injury problems but maybe the layoff has done him some good. Hes got a nice big frame and i always liked how hard he played. i cant imagine he would demand that much money because he knows hes a risk.

again, im just asking so dont chop my head off here

He could pay us money to play and I still would not want him.

ok, anyone want to offer an intelligent reply. i dont care if you think its a bad idea but at least give a reason why. sorry the thread wasnt about Ryan Smyth, Garry Bettman, or a washed up former red wing. im just trying to introduce a NEW discussion :sly:

Despite what most of you might think, Jason Allison would not be wasted cap space.....

He would delay the development of a young player who still has a chance at a career on the ice.

Okay, he is old and slower than Lang. He has not played in a year, that will not have done him any good. The dude is DONE. The so called "personal reasons" he missed last year with were his personal problems finding a team. He is done and over with. He is a centre, we have many centres. Allison throughout his career has been a playmaker, we need a goal scorer.

Getting an intelligent reply from superstarsingh might be pushing it a bit

Allison can be a point per game guy, but he reminds me too much of someone we just let go in terms of his lack of foot speed, & questionable effort without the puck.

For $1 million (prefer to pay him less) for 1 year - he might be the best deal out there since he's got alot to prove.

Allison was going through a divorce as well.

I did not know about the divorce. It does not chnage the fact that he is done as a hockey player. And if he is not done and some team offers him a contract I doubt it would be us.

You enjoy taking stupid personal shots at people for no reason eh? How unecessary.

"How hard he played"??? Did you suffer some sort of closed-head injury since you last saw him play? He's as lazy as is Lang, and he's a slower skater to boot.

If I weren't Jewish, I'd indeed crucify you for that one.

Getting an intelligent reply from superstarsingh might be pushing it a bit

Sorry, as much as I like him back in his Boston days, he's all but done IMO. And it's not like the Wings are lacking forward depth that can make everyday contributions by either scoring goals or throwing hits.

Is it laziness, or maybe he's just really slow

Will give credit where it's due; he can sure put up the pp points.

Go and ask Brett Hull just how easy it is to take a year off at an advanced age, then come back and play in a league which is suddenly twice as fast as it was before the lockout.

If Jason Allison moved slowly before the lockout, he'll move at a relative snail's pace in the new NHL.

And he still scored near a point per game in the New NHL on the second line. His 60 points in 66 games in 05-06 were better than anyone but Zetterberg and Datsyuk on this season's Wing team. Don't act like he offers nothing. If the Wings decide to add a low-price veteran UFA, Allison would be a good choice.

How on earth will an aging, rusty, incredibly slow hockey player help this team? Didn't we establish that Shanahan and Yzermans` departure allowed us to play a faster game? Why add someone far slower than either of them?

The three fastest players on the team are PK specialists. The offensive guys, guys like Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Hudler, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Filppula, Samuelsson? Those guys range from slow to above average. Not one can really be called 'fast' so how does adding point per game producer Allison hurt?

Do you honestly expect him to produce a point per game now that he's two years older and has a nice coat of rust?

NONE of our forwards are outright slow. Allison is a snail.

Don't forget - he mentions 3 seperate times how cheap inexpensive he is.

Also, he mentions wanting to be near Toronto to be near his kids.

231 miles on the 401 and 403 is pretty close.

I wouldn't be shocked. Sign a few of our higher priced free agents and throw in JA for a cheap pickup.

Who knows? Once again, I await KH's decisions.

Some of you guys make no sense. I mean, talk about calling the kettle black.....who are WE to call a player aging when we have Chelios on the blueline and Hasek (hopefully) in net. Not to mention, how can we forget how hockey fans across the country continuously shouted that the wings were always too old to win a cup?? But look what happend. I think we might have won a cup or two, i forget. someone look it up.

"But he took a year off so by defualt he sucks now!" look, i dont even care if you stayed in a Holiday Inn express last night, but you do not know the work out routine he has put himself through. Besides, these guys are world class athletes and it wont take him long to gain his stride again. Its not like he was injured for a year and was reduced to laying in bed all day. I'm sure he took care of himself. Unless you know for a fact that he layed in bed eating pancakes all day then shut the hell up. Took a year off? Again, I point towards Hasek. How did that fair? Hell, the whole LEAGUE took a year off for the lock out. Most guys went and played in other less competitive leagues. But so what, they stayed in shape. To back this up, I point towards Joe Kocur when we picked him back out from the beers leagues.

The last time anyone saw him play, he cleaned up and produced. I'm not saying we should by all means sign him.....but god damn, think with some sense here people. You have you're opinion, but you share it like its a fact. And the only fact i see around here is that most of you dont even understand what your tiny little brains are thinking. The Red Wings aren't going to have the roster that Holland was hoping for due to higher prices. We need to find another diamond in the rough if we want to start thinking about winning another cup. Is Allison that guy? Hell, i dont know. But lets leave it to those whos JOB it is to actually research and follow these issues up before we come to any conclusion. Agreed?

He does have skill, however it's widely accepted that he's one of the slowest players in the NHL. His last year in Toronto, he did score a lot of points but he took a lot of penalities becasue he couldn't keep up in the newer NHL. I know i'm just recycling knowledge but if he had good enough foot speed a team would have already sigend him.

Expect Kenny to at least consider the option, if we can't get Bert, to provide additional scoring on the power play. Otherwise I wouldn't necessarily count on it. Flip should do a fine job on the #2 unit given some decent wingers, and I believe the organization has made it clear, that is their plan.

Agreed? No. You're on a message board. Deal with it.

I laugh at any prospect that Jason Allison is a 'diamond in the rough.'

Tell me--did you actually watch him play during that season with the Leafs, or are you working purely by stats?

I give you a round of applause!!!!! Thats my thoughts exactly, I remember the year before he went to the leafs where he played for L.A I think it was where he was one of the top players in scoring. Age doesn't have a prime disadvantage as some of you guys may believe. Did Hasek, Chelios, Selanne, and Shanahan not have good seasons this year? I believe Allison has something to prove and with the amount of money we wouldn't have to spend to get this guy would be a great benefit for the future.
