Rice 42 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Well, with the three big UFA centers and Thornton signing today, the market was set for centers. Drury and Gomez were both inked by the Rangers. They're both big names, but people tend to forget about their regular season stats. Gomez has had above 70 points once in his career. Drury has never hit 70 points. These guys are both good in the post-season, but the regular season counts too (unlike some Detroit fans believe). Drury's cap number will be $7.05 million with the Rangers. Gomez's will be around $7.35 million. That's a lot for guys who don't put up big numbers during the regular season. Datsyuk's cap number is $6.7 million and he's coming off back-to-back 87 point seasons and he has shown he can keep up the pace in the playoffs as well. Aside from his point totals, he's quickly becoming one of the most complete forwards in the game. He's being paid a shade under Thornton's discounted $7.2 million dollar deal, which seems fair to me. All in all, Datsyuk's deal is, at the very least, fair. I think it's good and it's only going to look better as the cap increases.

Agreed 100% Kenny knew what he was about with that contract, and he knew that we wouldn't get someone as good as Dats any cheaper.
Superman54 91 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Really looks better now, considering I never ever thought Drury showed earn 7 million in the first place.
daniel1 32 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Really looks better now, considering I never ever thought Drury showed earn 7 million in the first place. Think it looks good now? Wait 2-3yrs then it will be a bargain. 5 years from now we might be saying he's the most UNDERPAID player in the league. He'll be making 6.7m/yr when other top line centers will be exceeding 10mil/yr on a regular basis for the next few years. Then we'll have a lockout again, and there will be a Cap put on the Cap, lol The big headache will be how to make Zetterberg's next deal look comparable to Datsyuk's while still locking him up long term. Statts 4 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 When Datsyuk’s contract was renewed, I thought it was a little steep. Now it is completely reasonable and like daniel1 said in a few years it will be a steal. If Buffalo’s management was smart they would have done the same thing with Briere and/or Drury.
GiantRobot 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Really looks better now, considering I never ever thought Drury showed earn 7 million in the first place. I think Drury is worth that with everything he brings to a team... Gomez and Briere on the other hand...
Kreator13 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Gomez has had above 70 points once in his career. Drury has never hit 70 points... Wow, i never realized that. Yea datsyuks contract is 100% worth it. he's been incredible and finally had is breakout in the playoffs. As much as he keeps improving, i can see him winning a conn smythe. Maybe a Hart tropthy but that might be reserved for crosby and ovechkin for a while.
KnightFire420 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 but the regular season counts too (unlike some Detroit fans believe). When was the last time the Wings had trouble making the top 4 in the West? How many times have "some Detroit fans" seen good or great Wings teams bow out in the first or second round? I think what those Detroit fans believe is true. datsyuk_13_fan 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Looks amazing right now. Great decisions by detroit management. I'd rather have Datsyuk over all the ufa's that have been signed.

I think what those Detroit fans believe is true. yea the disappointing playoff years (00', 03', 06',) kinda make those regular season achievements seem worthless. Most great teams are remembered for their championships, not how many games they won in the regular season. But hey, im still happy with 3 cups in 10 years. Maybe in Detroit, where it is Stanley Cup or bust every year. We have the luxury of having a team good enough to make the playoffs every year thanks to primarily Lidstrom. All I'm saying is regular season numbers matter too. Teams shouldn't go around giving guys max contracts just for playoff accomplishments.

There was a lockout because player costs were 75% of revenue. Under the current CBA, player costs cannot exceed 55% of revenue.

BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 As the cap increases, it will continue to look better. For the record though, I did think it was a bit pricy when it was first issued, just due to the fact that he never performed well in the playoffs. We all know that changed. Yes he is a very complete player too, often a first line penalty killer, and a first line powerplay specialist. Great to know he is the face of our future. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 3, 2007 Its certainly isnt as bad as people thought it was. Hes better then Gomez and Briere , the only reason I'd want Drury is hes tough as nails and is a playoff monster
Guest LivingtheDream Report post Posted July 3, 2007 Whenever I am down, I just think "The Wings have Datsyuk for all those years." and it makes me happy. Soon I can say the same about Hank. Any team would kill to have one of these guys, but together, it is just insane. Someone said they are like Trammell and Whittaker for the Wings. I like that. Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted July 3, 2007 I too am happy we locked him up for 7 years. $6.7 million when Bert is making 4 and Briere and Gomez are making 7. Amazing.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 3, 2007 Its pretty good I guess... if you didnt want Ryan Smyth. Personally, I'd much rather have a nucleas consisting of Smyth and Zetterberg than Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Wouldve rather used that money on Smyth and signed a second line center to replace Lang. Just my opinion. (or used Flip at 2nd line center and signed another winger...whichever)
